CARLSBAD -- San Marcos author Yaz Manley will discuss and sign copies of her new novel "Unrest: Dissent in Suburbia," a fictional memoir centered around a character living in the suburbs of San Diego, from noon to 5 p.m. March 24 at Borders book store, 1905 Calle Barcelona, in the Carlsbad Forum shopping center.

Proceeds from sales of the book will be used to fill backpacks with essential hygiene products, snacks, water and first-aid kits for homeless individuals in the community.

Ostomy support group to meet

OCEANSIDE -- The Ostomy Support Group of North County will meet at 1 p.m. March 23 in Assembly Room 1 at Tri-City Medical Center, 4002 Vista Way.

This month's meeting will feature an open forum session where attendees will have the opportunity to discuss topics of their choice. The group welcomes input on its current programs, as well as recommendations for future programs. Regular break-out sessions will follow the open forum.

Japanese art, culture event on tap

SAN DIEGO -- Japanese art, culture and tradition will come alive at the Taka Sumi-e Society's annual art exhibition to be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 24 and 25 in Room 101 at Casa del Prado in Balboa Park.

The event will include demonstrations of sumi-e, the Japanese art of brush painting; a display of original works by members of the society; a fashion show highlighting wearable art; demonstrations of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony; and performances by Japanese dancers.

'Signs of Spring' hike slated

SAN PASQUAL VALLEY -- The San Dieguito River Park will host a "Signs of Spring" hike from 9 a.m. to noon March 24.

Museum to host Navy Heritage Day

SAN DIEGO -- The Maritime Museum will celebrate the history of the U.S. Navy in San Diego with Navy Heritage Day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. March 24. The museum's newest permanent exhibit "San Diego's Navy," which is based on the book of the same name by Bruce Linder, will be unveiled at the event. The Navy Band will perform from noon to 1 p.m.

Children of active-duty Navy and Marine Corps personnel with valid ID will be admitted free.

PFLAG group to meet March 25

CARLSBAD -- Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, or PFLAG, a parent-led support and information organization, will meet at 2 p.m. March 25 at the Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 2020 Chestnut Ave.

PFLAG invites anyone having difficulties understanding gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender issues to attend the meeting, especially when family relationships are disrupted. Family members, as well as GLBT people, are invited to join in discussions of mutual support.

Fly-fishing raffle set for March 26

DEL MAR -- The Golden State Flycasters and the San Diego chapter of Trout Unlimited will hold their annual Conservation Raffle and Silent Auction on March 26 at Chevys Mexican Restaurant, 2730 Via de la Valle.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. with the raffle to begin at 7. Proceeds will support GSF/TU conservation projects in San Diego County.

Fine arts group to hold show

POWAY -- The North County Society of Fine Arts' annual Members Show will run from March 30 through April 25 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road.

Awareness workshop for women offered

NORTH COUNTY -- The San Dieguito River Park will host a free "Women's Awareness 101" workshop from 10 a.m. to noon March 31.

Women can learn basic awareness skills that will give them the confidence needed to get out and get active. Instructor Hal Collier, who holds a second-degree black belt in tae kwon do, will teach easy martial arts techniques and offer simple tips to help minimize discomfort in any unfamiliar setting.

Egg hunt for kids with disabilities set

SAN DIEGO -- Easter Seals and the Hilton San Diego Resort will host the 34th annual Easter Eggstravaganza from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 7 at the resort.

Hundreds of kids with disabilities, including autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome, will hunt for more than 3,500 plastic eggs filled with candy throughout the grounds of the resort. Following the egg hunt, the children and their families will enjoy a luncheon and entertainment compliments of the hotel.

MS Walks set for April 28 and 29

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society's Pacific South Coast Chapter, headquartered in Carlsbad, will hold its 2007 San Diego County Credit Union MS Walk at 8 a.m. April 28 at Legoland California in Carlsbad. An estimated 5,000 walkers are expected to participate.

A second walk, with an estimated 6,000 walkers, will step off at 8:30 a.m. April 29 at Embarcadero Marina Park South in downtown San Diego.

Nominations sought for nonviolence awards

SAN DIEGO -- The Tariq Khamisa Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of youth violence, is accepting nominations for its 10th annual Gandhi Nonviolence Awards. Eight individuals and organizations will be honored for their leadership and promotion of nonviolence.

Nominations can be made in the following categories: Youth male (ages 7 to 18); and Youth female (ages 7 to 18); School; Business; Community Leader Individual; Community Leader Organization; Faith Community; and Community Communications. Nominees must reside in San Diego County

The awards ceremony will be held Oct. 6. at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego.

Cancer support group for kids offered

LA JOLLA -- Kids Konnected, a free support group for children who have a parent with cancer or have lost a parent to cancer, meets the second Tuesday of the month in the UTC area.

Open to ages 4 to 18, the group focuses on peer support, education, understanding and friendship, and is facilitated by professionals.

Campground host needed

RAMONA -- The Palomar District of the Cleveland National Forest is accepting applications for the observatory campground host position.

The campground host performs basic campground maintenance, including the cleaning of fire rings, shower units, restrooms and campsites, and answer campers' questions about regulations and recreation opportunities. The schedule would be a five-day work week, including weekends.

This is a volunteer position beginning in early May through the end of October. There is no pay; however, an RV campsite will be provided, along with electricity, propane, water and sewage facilities.

Parkinson's symposium set for March 31

SAN DIEGO -- The Parkinson's Disease Association of San Diego will host a symposium for Parkinson's patients, families and health care professionals titled "The Parkinson's Journey & the Help Along the Way" from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 31 at the Scottish Rite Conference Center.

Topics will include an update on disease management techniques, the role of physical therapy, benefits of tai chi and a discussion of new and old drugs used in treating the disease. In addition, participants will experience an exercise session with physical therapist Amy Walsh.

Sailing classes for youths offered

OCEANSIDE -- The Oceanside Yacht Club offers summer sailing programs for children ages 8 to 12. The five-day program focuses on teaching youths the basic skills of seamanship and safety.

Courses will begin July 9. Cost is $175 for beginners and $125 for intermediate students.

'Women in Health' luncheon planned

CARMEL MOUNTAIN RANCH -- Palomar Pomerado Health and the American Heart Association will present "Midlife Maintenance: A Closer Look at Menopause and Osteoporosis" from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 4 at Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club, 14050 Carmel Ridge Road. The event is part of the heart association's 2007 "Women in Health" luncheon series sponsored by PPH.

Kay Bradshaw-Smith, a physician assistant, will unravel the mystery of menopause through a presentation on hormone replacement therapy, alternative therapies and other lifestyle changes designed to help women cope with this midlife change. Dr. Cynthia Robertson will explore the risk factors for osteoporosis and the steps women can take to help prevent, detect and correct low bone mass.

SAN DIEGO -- Jesse Saucedo, manager of the Spy & Security Store in San Marcos, will speak at a meeting of Sisters in Crime at 7 p.m. April 5. He will talk about and demonstrate some of the latest surveillance gadgets the store offers.
