Teams show plenty of interest in Bolts' Turner
By: MIKE SULLIVAN - Staff Writer | ∞
SAN DIEGO ---- Chargers restricted free agent Michael Turner was a hot name over at the NFL meetings in Phoenix this week.
Teams looking for a starting running back are assessing whether to make a run at trading for Turner or filling their needs in the late-April NFL draft.
"There was a lot of activity," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said. "Very interesting. We'll see what all the talk means.
"There's legitimate interest on a few teams' part. A couple others are asking."
Smith declined to discuss specifics in terms of interested teams or what offers he has fielded. But it's known that the Green Bay Packers are highly interested in Turner. The Buffalo Bills also have interest.
Green Bay recently lost Ahman Green to Houston via free agency and Buffalo traded Willis McGahee to Baltimore.
Four weeks ago, the Chargers placed the highest possible tender on Turner, guaranteeing him a $2.35 million salary for 2007 if he remains with the Chargers. The tender allows the Chargers to match any offer sheet that Turner receives from another team. It also means any team that signs Turner to a free-agent deal must give up a first- and third-round draft pick to the Chargers.
The high price has scared teams away from signing Turner to an offer sheet, so movement involving Turner will likely come only via trade.
Just last week, Houston traded for Atlanta quarterback Matt Schaub, a restricted free agent who also received the high tender. The Texans gave up two second-round picks, switched positions in the first round with the Falcons and signed Schaub to a six-year, $48-million contract.
Logic dictates any team interested in trading for Turner would also want to negotiate a long-term deal.
Turner's agent, Bus Cook, didn't return a phone message on Thursday.
Smith said there's no urgency on the part of the Chargers to make a deal involving Turner. Smith likes having Turner (502 yards in 2006) as an insurance policy in case of a serious injury to NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson.
"I don't have a timetable," Smith said. "Some of the teams might. They want to know if they have a back. I'm OK. I either have the running back or I have some draft picks."
Buffalo has the 12th overall selection of the draft and Green Bay has the 16th. Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson is expected to be chosen within the top five picks. California's Marshawn Lynch is expected to be scooped up by either the Bills or Packers, pending the teams' moves prior to the draft.

If we allow AJ to run this team and his monkeyboy Norv, we will end up with the Oakland Raiders in the cellar. Who cares if you have new uniforms, even if you look good, losing is still losing. I feel sorry for the true talent on this team, all of the players. I wish you luck, but it's hard to ride the bus when no one is driving.

The Chargers, with the exception of Donnie Edwards, haven't really lost anyone, and have lost no one that cannot be replaced. Remember the last guy who backed up LT? Where is he now? Either way, I trust AJ will have yet another brilliant draft. Adding a 1st and 3rd to that will be icing on the cake. Remember, he's proven how good he is at finding talent in the draft, have a little faith.

It does not matter what players you have, if the captain of the ship is a guy with no character and not the offensive mind he was believed to be..

He is a great back-up, but I wouldn't try to force that down other teams throats unless I was sure he could handle most of the load like LT. If Nelson is availabe at 16, I would trade first's and Turner with the Pack to get him in a heart beat (maybe get a third as well if we could). I'd rather see us get something now then nothing next year--I'm not greedy.

Start payoing attention, AJ has built through the draft and the only mistake he made ws not getting something for Brees other than a thrid rund compensatory pick. Being a native, I have seen 40 years worth of Charger teams and this is, by far, the best assembly of talent we have EVER HAD, even during Air Coryell. I wouldn't trade trade him for anything less than a high second round market value as his current value as insurance and a low third is easily worth more than anything less.
ZippyO wrote on Mar 30, 2007 12:29 PM:OK, I was born and lived most of my life in San Diego, I have had the very rare pleasure, and almost constant displeasure, of being a Charger fan for my 37 years of life. When it comes to Norv Turner, I for one, am pretty excited and think that was a brilliant hire. Sure the way they went about it was all wrong, and Marty deserved better. But win or lose, Marty was gone after this upcoming season, so we needed someone who could get our offense through the playoffs and into the Super Bowl for years to come, Marty couldn't, and didn't, end of story. He made many questionable decisions against the Pats, and our players did some stupid things. Bottom line is, lay off Norv; Chuck Knoll, Tom Landry, or Vince Lombardi himself could not have won games with the same teams that Norv lost with in Washington and Oakland. So, lets give our coach some respect, if he can't win with what is already clearly the most talent filled team in the NFL this year for sure, then you have every right to call him a bad coach. But trust me, when you consider what young QB's have done under Norv (Aikman and Smith) and how offenses have thrived, well I for one am excited to see how Rivers matures, and how this team progresses to the Super Bowl. Bolt fans unite, quit being pessimists, and lets support ALL our team, especially new coaches (landing Rivera to coach Merriman and Phillips, what a gift from the football Gods!!!). With our support and no more negativity, we will be in Arizona next year, I guarantee!!!!!

Theres no reason why we should not go to the playoffs and end up in Arizona in February.
BoltzFan wrote on Mar 30, 2007 2:00 PM:The real reason the bolts hired Norv as a head coach is because he wouldn't take the Off cord job. he would have rather stayed in SF. We are going to have a great year.

That being said...I can see a deal where Turner goes to GB, and they swap picks in the 1st round...but that's about it....Packers' GM Ted Thompson is pretty tight with his draft picks, and he spend them unwisely ala Daniel Snyder.

But, he will also walk next year and we will get nothing in return. I don't think there's any shot of getting a 1st and 3rd. Teams may be apprehensive about swappng in the first round since RB is considered a position you can get between the 2nd-4th round (Turner was a 5th!). I think a 2nd round pick with maybe a late-rounder will be the deal. Go Bolts!!

No team in the league has more talent than your squad and adding a few high draft picks would mean death to the AFC. A high first rounder could upgrade your secondary and maybe a WR? With 3 starting rookies on our O-line last year, we're an explosive RB short of helping Brett and the offense. The Bears are falling apart and Turner could be the guy to put us back on top of the North. Thompson is tight with his draft picks, but he's willing to upgrade the team for the right guy. I'd love to see it work out for both teams. Go Pack!!

Charger fans are having trouble reorienting themselves to the new reality, which is that we're in the uper ecehelons now with New England, Pittsburgh, Denver etc. and built to last. Deal with it: we're good. Would AJ settle for a third rounder and a proven wide receiver -- or a safety, which is the only real hole in the roster right now? I think so

Some teams dont have any hope and one of them is the Raiders. Norv doesnt need to do much to this team but call the plays and let our squad execute them. As far as MT goes, I think it would be a smart idea to trade him now while we can get some draft help. Next year he probably will be gone for nothing. Get us that extra 1st pick. When you think about it, it's a pretty sweet deal for the Bolts because you'll lose Turner next season anyhow with no compensation.

SD still wants the 3rd pick as well but that demand is likely a bargaining chip for the best deal possible. If it's all true and not an April Fools joke a day early then Turner will be gone and either Nelson will be at safety or Meachem at WR and a mid round RB such as Jackie Battle will add support for LT and the Chargers will have done the smartest thing once again.

Bills, Titans or Pack will get him. Smith may be turned off just a ‘bit by Bills/Titans as AFC teams. It'd be surprising if anyone gave up a 1st rounder outright for him. A swap of 1st rounders may be a possibility as well. AJ Smith tendered him high so he wouldn’t have to take a low 2nd rounder from the two NY teams. Of course NYs filled their RB needs now. You think Smith would be stupid to take a high 2nd rounder? I’d say he’s stupid to keep him for a year as a backup and let him walk for free. NO WAY TURNER’S A CHARGER THIS YEAR. GET REAL! Even AJ Smith’s comments have finally stated as much.
footballpest wrote on Apr 1, 2007 7:30 AM:I suspect at the end of the process that AJ swaps first rounders and takes another first day pick for M. Turner. As to the other Turner, it all cascades from Schottenheimer manuevering himself to get fired. Since Wade Phillips had been hired away, the choice was one of several defensive coordinators available or Turner. They hired Turner because the chosen offensive coordinator was very inexperienced. Much easier to hire a capable d-coordinator; and Norv could not be hired away as O-coordinator since he was under contract.

I know Cameron (Miami) likes Turner and would trade for him at #9 pick but Landry won't be available and the other WRs after Calvin Johnson aren't worthy of a #9 overall selection. That's why I agree this might not get done until draft day but two things are for sure, AJ is a genius in the draft and Michael Turner has played his last down as a Charger.

The $ they'll save by NOT signing players in those big money rounds will only help the team(s) via salary cap. I also think the Chargers and doing a lot of posturing for Turner, and will take less than a 1 and 3. Let's be honest, they get what they get out of him this year, or next year they get nothing. I think it's a win/win/win for the Chargers, a new team, and Turner as a player. I'm a Steeler fan, but I think the Chargers have a great team. They are going to begin to feel the losses that come with success, and a good GM will always be a step ahead, i.e. dealing Turner for draft pics. My prediction will be Turner at the Titans. White has all the talent in the world, but he's lazy and unmotivated. He already showed up at camp grossly overweight, and with all the bad press of Pacman Jones, the Titans need to win and win right out of the gate to make people forget the negative.
