USS Nimitz, other warships leave San diego for the Persian Gulf

SAN DIEGO - The USS Nimitz and several other American warships left San Diego today for the Persian Gulf to join another locally based aircraft carrier strike group already in the region.
The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will join the San Diego-based John C. Stennis Strike Group and relieve the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, according to Naval Air Forces Public Affairs.
Military officials said in a statement that the two-carrier presence in the Persian Gulf area is intended to demonstrate U.S. "resolve to build regional security and bring long-term stability to the region."
The Nimitz's departure comes amid heightened tensions in the region following the detention of 15 British sailors and marines by Iran. Iran maintains the detainees were operating in its territorial waters, a charge the British government denies.
President Bush ratcheted up the rhetoric over the weekend, calling the detainees "hostages" -- a term not even the British had used.
The tension over the detainees coincides with international pressure on Iran to give up its uranium enrichment program, which it maintains is strictly for peaceful purposes. The United States and other nations fear Iran is working toward the development of nuclear weapons.
The Nimitz will support the war on terrorism, patrol the Horn of Africa and conduct marine security operations as part of the larger effort to "deter and dissuade others from acting counter to U.S. national interests," according to a Navy statement.
Accompanied by his family at Naval Air Station North Island this morning, a sailor preparing for his fifth deployment said the departures aren't getting any easier for his three young daughters -- a 22-month-old, a 3-year- old and a 5-year-old.
"It seems to be getting a bit harder because they're all older and they seem to know that something's going on ... Daddy's not going to be around," he said.
"You just tell them every night, you know, Daddy's trying to keep us safe," the sailor's wife said, adding the family corresponds overseas via e- mail and video teleconference.
The Nimitz Strike Group comprises the guided-missile cruiser Princeton, guided-missile destroyers Higgins, Chafee, John Paul Jones and Pinckney, two helicopter squadrons and an explosive ordnance disposal unit.
The Stennis and its strike group left Naval Base Coronado on Jan. 20. It is the largest carrier presence in the Persian Gulf since the start of the war in Iraq.

Skip wrote on Apr 2, 2007 11:23 PM:Better them then me, but I will be leaaving later this year. I am sure you will all miss me. LOL
Canuck wrote on Apr 3, 2007 11:33 AM:I think the "west" has many more aircraft carriers then we would need to obliterate resistance in the entire mid east, we have the power they have the fuel, so send the ships to the fuel and get them filled up.
Justin wrote on Apr 7, 2007 8:34 AM:So, the parents of the children who don't want Daddy to go just tell the kids "Daddy is just trying to keep us safe". Safe from WHAT? A postage stamp country with no ability to GET a nuke here if they had one? OR, Safe from another country, like Iraq, that has decided to stop accepting American dollars for oil? That's what saddam decided to do before he got invaded & that's what decidion has come out of Iran recebtly. IF Washington D.C was serious about protecting this country, they would CONTROL our own borders.
Macs wrote on Apr 7, 2007 10:44 AM:It's a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, it doesn't need to fuel up from the gulf.
Cindy wrote on Apr 7, 2007 2:41 PM:Apparently, Justin, you must not know what they do aboard the Nimitz and other Naval ships. They DO keep us safe. You have NOOOOOOO idea of the things they are doing aboard these ships to keep america and its borders in tact. So, what would happen if we didnt send ANYTHING or ANYONE to Iraq? The US would be hurt yet again by terrorists, thats what would happen. BTW, we do control our own borders. Our ships are all over the east and west coats and can protect our borders from the base. As a navy wife with a sailor aboard the Nimitz, you should watch what you say, you might offend someone. My husband and many other men and woman keep us safe from things we dont even know what are happening.
DJ wrote on Apr 9, 2007 11:40 AM:To Cindy, Apparently, Cindy, you subscribe to the propaganda--that's right-- propaganda disseminated by Mainstream media. Seek out alternative, unbiased sources to get the real story on Bush et. al, and their true agenda for war with Iran... Google "9/11 Truth" if you want to learn just how the government promotes safety within U.S. borders. As the mother of a sailor currently deployed in the Persian Gulf, I do understand your desire to defend U.S. military. Our troops are heroes. The government which deploys our troops and puts them in harm's way, however, are nothing short of war criminals. Do your own research. Please!
Cindy wrote on Apr 9, 2007 12:59 PM:To DJ, I have done my own research. To say that I subscribe to propaganda has nothing to do with my comment. As for your comment about defending our US military, this an all-volunteering military. When people sign up for the service, they know what they are getting themselves into. Noone has forced these people to stand in harms way!! As for 9/11 truth, it seems like someone is awfully influential to believe such a thing. You of such disloyalty to America, if you have such strong veiws against our government, why not move OUT of our country????
Will wrote on Apr 28, 2007 10:50 PM:To Cindy, if the founding fathers had listened to your advice there wouldn't be an America. That's the old cliche tag line for the narrow of mind. If you don't mind your husbands life being bartered for the wealth of the corporate elite then so be it, but don't kid yourself about who the true enemies of the American people are.
Bob wrote on May 4, 2007 10:54 AM:To the real enemies of the United States-- you need not attack us, we attack ourselves and become distracted from attacking you. Congress attacks the President and vise versa. We allow various factions to attack our values and do nothing when we are attacked by militants from other countries. We could have attacked North Korea or Iran or Syria and hit a real target, but---we attacked Iraq. This allowed us to hit the weakest target in the Middle East and gave us a reason to maintain a presence there as a stabilizing entity. What we are doing there as given America a few years to strengthen itself until the next attack...it will come have no doubt...do not lose your focus.
lisa wrote on May 8, 2007 10:36 AM:Well I support Cindy since I too am a Navy wife. You guys dont know what goes on aboard the ship. You dont know what kind of life these sailors live to help keep our country free and safe. To you that are flapping your jaws you probably have never been in the service and have no clue. So leave our service people alone!! They would much rather be home with their families then over fighting in Iraq or out on some ship somewhere. It isnt fun for them!!
CPH wrote on May 12, 2007 4:03 PM:Cindy, you are also a hero in my book. My youngest son is on the Nimitz and I support him. To DJ: How do you know what you believe about 9/11 isn't propaganda, also? You don't!! please, support your country and servicemen.
Birdie wrote on May 29, 2007 6:40 PM:May God Bless each and every servicemen and all the veterans we have in this wonderful country. May each and everyone of them be treated with the UPMOST respect from EVERY American citizen!!! Thank them for all the wonderful freedoms we all have and enjoy as well as take for granted. I have 2 sons serving at this time. My baby is on the Nimitz. "May all our warriors sleep in safety tonight!!!"
Sue wrote on Jul 4, 2007 9:42 AM:I pray that God does bless each and everyone that serves in our military. My oldest son is on the Nimitz, and I--like Cindy,Lisa, and Birdie stand in support of what our country is doing. I'm sure it's a difficult job deciding how to defend a nation at a time when half of your own country won't stand up for itself, and is fighting within!! If you take a look at what our country has stood for through the years--sending help to the helpless, food to those whose governments are selling it away from those in need, etc. you should be proud to be an American, and you should stand by those who try to protect the freedoms some of you out there have taken for granted. I give a deeply felt thankyou to all of you that put your lives on the line, so I can enjoy my life here in America.
Tommy wrote on Jul 11, 2007 1:41 PM:I joined the service to support and defend our wonderful country. You are free to open your mouth every day and be critical of the Government and Military. Why? Because of thousands of men and women who have taken the same oath. I am deployed today to fight a war many miles away in another country's back yard. Why? So we will not have to fight a war in our front yard. You seem to feel that Sadam was a great man. If you feel so strongly about it then you should have moved to Iraq while he was in power. I am sorry I did not hear you. Oh, you did not own a gas mask at the time. Well maybe next time around you purchase yourself a good one. Want to know what the U.S. would be like without our military? Just go to Iraq now and see what everyday normal citizens are going through. I am thankful for what all of my shipmates do. I also wish the citizens of Iraq the best of luck and hope that your country will start to show signs of stability in the near future. Maybe one day you will only have to worry about things that us Americans do. Did I leave my car unlocked?
