Chargers, Titans talk trade for Turner

The Chargers and Tennessee Titans have conducted trade talks involving restricted free agent running back Michael Turner, Chargers general manager A.J. Smith confirmed Tuesday night.

Turner visited the Titans on Monday. Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt told reporters in Tennessee on Tuesday that the Titans have had "general discussions" with both the Chargers and Turner's agent.

"All I'll do is verify that Tennessee is talking to us and we are discussing the possibilities of Michael going to the Titans," Smith said. "Beyond that, I don't have much to say."

The Chargers placed the $2.35 million tender on Turner, meaning any team signing him to an offer sheet would owe the club first- and third-round draft picks if the Chargers didn't match the offer. The more likely scenario would be a trade in which the Titans acquired Turner for a lesser package.

"For right now, it's a one and a three," said Smith, "but I'm flexible."

The Titans have the 19th overall pick in this month's NFL draft. Tennessee was planning to meet with veteran free agent Corey Dillon today, but the meeting has been pushed back.

And, the deepest position in the draft is WR (See Buddy Nix's comments on CHARGERS. site today.), so they can pick up a solid WR later (either late in 1st or in 2nd). If (and I doubt he does) A.J. trades up, the best scenario is to get Laron Landry at # 7. Many say he's the safest defensive pick in the draft. If you look at the draft value charts used by most teams, the 19th (875) and 30th (620) may allow A.J. to trade those two picks and maybe a 4th to move up to Minnesota's 7th (1500 value). Landry will be gone at #8 (to Atlanta). The other option would be to keep both picks, and pick up either Safety Reggie Nelson or Michael Griffin is available at 19, and use the 30th on a WR like Meacham, Bowe, Rice, or maybe even Ginn.

scottdee wrote on Apr 5, 2007 7:41 PM:I agree with "another hillbilly charger fan" comments above regarding moving up to get Landry. I think AJ will make a deal with someone for Turner and package the two 1st round picks to move up and get Landry. Then, he will package. Then he will package the lower Turner compensation pick with one or both of the compensatory picks the NFL awarded to us and move up in the 2nd round to get a WR. He'll use the later picks on RB, LB, OL, DL. Plus, unless D-Flo has a great year this year (not likely) his contract will be up after the year so he is likely trade bait now thereby making CB an area to be addressed in the draft too. No matter who our trading partners are there is no doubt in my mind AJ and the Chargers will be very active on the first day of the draft.

Jake wrote on Apr 13, 2007 11:11 AM:The Charger team is pretty much set already. They have plenty of draft picks to pick up all the players they need. They just have to draft the productive players, which is much easier said than done. If Turner is traded, I would hope he would be trade for draft picks in 2009 or 2010. The Chargers don't need the picks this year or next year. They won't be able to keep more than 4 or 5 people that they draft this year. The key is to find a trading partner that for some reason over the years hasn't improved enough to get into the playoffs that also happens to need a starting runningback. That isn't that hard, there are plenty of them. It also should be much easier to make the trade because they are for picks in a few years, not now.
