SAN DIEGO ---- Learn the art of caricature at the next Southern California Cartoonists Society meeting at 6:30 p.m. April 11 at the San Diego Blood Bank, 440 Upas St. Several caricature artists will be on hand for this instructive workshop. The meeting will include a potluck dinner. Cost is $2. Cartoonists and art students are invited.

In addition, members of SCCS will volunteer their skills for the 20th annual Cartoonists Day on April 21 at all San Diego Blood Bank locations.

Ballet company to present 'Firebird'

VISTA ---- New West Ballet Theatre will present the historical ballet "Firebird" at 7 p.m. April 6 and 7 at the Avo Playhouse, 303 Main St. Also on the program will be "Allegro Primavera," as well as a guest performance by the Mojalet Dance Collective called "Portraits With Mozart."

Electronics disposal event set

ENCINITAS ---- Consumers can drop off their obsolete electronics free of charge from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 7 at the Encinitas CompUSA store, 1046 N. El Camino Real.

Acceptable items include monitors and televisions, computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, telephones and cell phones, stereos, CD and DVD players and virtually any item that would be considered office or home electronics. No microwave or toaster ovens, vacuum cleaners, fluorescent lights, heaters or liquified hazardous waste will be accepted.

Trigeminal neuralgia group to meet

LA JOLLA ---- The Trigeminal Neuralgia Association's San Diego County Support Group will meet from 10 a.m. to noon April 7 in the Coral Room at Thornton Hospital at UC San Diego, 9300 Campus Point Drive. The speaker will be Paul Loftin, administrator for the Gamma Knife Center.

Teen Talent Show on tap for April 7

VALLEY CENTER ---- The preliminary Teen Talent Show and Competition will take place at 7 p.m. April 7 in the Maxine Theatre on the Valley Center High School campus, 31322 Cole Grade Road. Students will work on their talents, whether it is dance, vocal, instrumental or drama, and judges will decide who moves on to the finals show. Once in the finals, contestants vie for first, second and third place with prizes of $500, $250 and $125 respectively.

This year's contestants include students from Valley Center Middle School, Valley Center High School, Escondido Charter High School, Escondido High School, San Pasqual High School, Carlsbad High School, Cathedral Catholic School, Hidden Valley Christian Academy, St. Mary's School, Grace Christian High School, Heritage Christian High School, San Marcos High School, Mission Hills High School, La Costa Canyon High School and Calvin Christian.

Palomar Handweavers to meet April 9

ESCONDIDO ---- The Palomar Handweavers Guild will meet from 9:30 a.m. to noon April 9 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 845 Chestnut St.

The program will be the Weave a Real Peace slide show. WARP is a nonprofit networking organization dedicated to empowering women and communities in need around the world through textile arts.

Contemporary Women to meet

Horticulturist to speak April 9

DEL MAR ---- The San Diego Horticultural Society will host a program at 7 p.m. April 9 in the Surfside Race Place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd.

Renowned horticulturist Thomas Hobbs will present "Bel'Occhio: Finding and Gardening With Your Beautiful Eye." He will talk about how inspiration can be found in things like architectural form, famous European gardens, natural rock formations and even discarded items.

Democratic club to meet April 10

"American Blackout," a documentary about the disenfranchisement of black voters during the 2000 and 2004 elections, will be shown.

The Compassionate Friends meets in Carlsbad

Genealogy group plans meetings

CARLSBAD ---- The North San Diego County Genealogical Society will hold a business and sharing meeting at 10 a.m. April 10 in the Carlsbad City Council chambers, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive.

CSUSM International Fair on tap

SAN MARCOS ---- The fifth annual Cal State San Marcos International Fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 12 in the University Hall Plaza on campus, 333 S. Twin Oaks Valley Road. The event will feature free food such as German bratwurst, udon noodles, Greek salad and Mexican taquitos. There also will be performances, demonstrations and an international fashion show. Diabetes support group to meet

OCEANSIDE ---- The North County Diabetes Support Group will meet at 7 p.m. April 12 in the Community Room at the Oceanside Mission Branch Library, 3861 Mission Ave.

The meeting is open to all diabetics, as well as those interested in learning more about the disease and its treatment and health consequences. Cindy Garvey will moderate and present topics of interest.

Also, a speaker from Pfizer Pharmaceutical Co. will discuss Exubera, an inhaled insulin medication.

Press Club elects new president

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- Robert Fertig has been elected president of the Press Club of North San Diego County. The club, formerly known as the Rancho Bernardo Press Club, is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The April 13 meeting will feature Herb Klein, former press secretary to President Richard M. Nixon and retired editor-in-chief of the Copley newspapers. A 25th anniversary party will held at the May 9 meeting.

Sons of American Revolution to meet

SAN DIEGO ---- The San Diego chapter of Sons of the American Revolution will meet at 9 a.m. April 14 in the Lisbon Room of the Ramada Inn, 5550 Kearny Mesa Road. Breakfast will be served. Cost is $16 payable at the door.

The speaker will be James Bruce Joseph Sievers, former Green Beret, Valley Forge Medal of Honor winner, poet and candidate for Poet Laureate of the United States.

Chamber music concert planned

CARLSBAD ---- The Lake San Marcos Chamber Music Society will present a chamber music concert at 2:30 p.m. April 15 in the Schulman Auditorium at the Carlsbad Library, 1775 Dove Lane. The string quintet will include Julia Cser, violin; Roger Wilkie, violin; Brian Dembow, viola; Paul Cohen, cello; and Kim Scholes, cello.

Golf tourney to benefit Arc

LAKE SAN MARCOS ---- The Arc of San Diego will present its first North County Charity Golf Tournament on April 20 at the Lake San Marcos Country Club, 1750 San Pablo Drive.

Founded in 1951, the Arc serves more than 2,500 children and adults with disabilities throughout the county.

Dan Plante, KUSI Channel 9/51 news anchorman, will serve as this year's host. The day will kick off with an 11:30 a.m. check-in followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The day will conclude at 5 p.m. with a no-host bar and 6 p.m. dinner and awards ceremony.
