ESCONDIDO -- A stolen car crashed early Wednesday morning during a police pursuit in Escondido, authorities said.

Lt. Mark Wrisley said officers arrested the suspected driver, 23-year-old Jacob Gutierrez. The chase began about 12:45 a.m. on northbound Interstate 15 at Highway 78, when an officer saw a red 1995 Acura Integra that had been reported stolen, Wrisley said.

"He tried to stop the vehicle," said the lieutenant. "There was a real, real short pursuit. The vehicle crashed on I-15."

The driver ran from the car, Wrisley said. Officers surrounded the area and called in a sheriff's dog team to help find the driver. Gutierrez was taken into custody, Wrisley said.

Gutierrez was booked into the Vista jail on suspicion of vehicle theft and possession of a stolen vehicle.

His bail was set at $20,000, pending a court appearance Friday. However, he also has a state parole hold on him, a sheriff's jail clerk said.
