Dan was fortunate to find love a second time, and married Joanna Bartels, from Des Moines, Iowa, in 1983. He welcomed her two adult children, Keith Bartels and Meadow Goodrich into the family and loved them as his own.
Dan retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1990 and enjoyed his retirement years with his wife of 24 years, Joanna. They traveled together and welcomed countless young people into their home, building up a large, extended family of adoptees who came to call them "Mom and Dad" or "Grandpa and Grandma."
