PALM SPRINGS -- It was a Sonny weekend in the desert.
Sonny Bono's sidewalk star, dug up years ago for a construction project, was relocated on Palm Canyon Drive and rededicated Saturday in front of the former entertainer-mayor-congressman's bronze statue.
"It's unbelievably beautiful," said U.S. Rep. Mary Bono, who took part in the downtown ceremony with children Chianna Bono and Chesare Bono.
"The kids and I come down here often or drive by the statute. I think of this place as the heart of downtown. We're honored," the congresswoman said.
Sonny Bono died Jan. 5, 1998, when he slammed into a tree while skiing at the Heavenly Ski Resort on the Nevada-California state line. He was 62.
During Saturday's emotional star rededication, he was remembered as half the Sonny & Cher singing duo, as Palm Springs mayor from 1988 to 1992 and as a congressman until his death.
"We will never forget what he has done for us," said Mayor Ron Oden, who proclaimed April 7, 2007, Sonny Bono Day.
Cher sent in an audio message.
Fans waited for hours for the star unveiling.
"It's wonderful to see the kids. He must be proud," Pamella Mann said.
