Chien is inspired for final go-round

ENCINITAS ---- Sam Chien is playing golf like he is possessed. The 17-year-old junior from Mt. Carmel High was denied eligibility for his senior year by the CIF San Diego Section because he played parts of two seasons ---- one in Australia, one for the Sundevils ---- as a freshman. So Chien is playing his final year for the Sundevils with a renewed passion for the game.

Matched against Southern California's best in the inaugural Mustang/Maverick Pahr Invitational at Encinitas Ranch Golf Course, Chien shot a 2-under-par 70 to tie for third after the first round Monday.

Cathedral Catholic's Daniel Miernicki shot a 4-under 68 to lead a group of 84 golfers in the two-day tournament. Mike Brockington of Dana Hills and Connor Driscoll of La Costa Canyon were one shot behind.

Five La Costa Canyon players shot par or better as the Mavericks carded a school-record 9-under 351 to lead the team competition. Cathedral Catholic is second with a 367.

Chien, who leads North County with a 35.45 scoring average over 11 matches, said he is playing golf like he has never played before.

"This is my last chance, and I am just trying to make the most of what I got," Chien said.

Instead of enjoying his senior year with his Sundevils, Chien said he will focus a little more on his game next year and play in more junior tournaments.

"It sucks, but it is just the way it goes," said Chien, who hopes to continue his golf career at UCLA, Northwestern or California. "Next year I will focus on college and just try and set myself up for that and the junior circuit."

Mt. Carmel coach Terry Miller said having Chien on the team is a blessing.

"Everyone looks to him to help them with their swing and putting stroke. It is like having another coach out there," Miller said. "Sam means a lot to us. He is not only a leader on the course but off the course as well."
