SAN DIEGO---- Last year Chris Young became an integral part of the Padres' starting rotation. On Tuesday the Padres announced at Petco Park that Young will be a fixture in that group for at least the next four years.

The 27-year-old received a four-year, $14.5 million contract through 2010 with an $8.5 million team option for 2011. The deal also includes a $500,000 signing bonus.

The Padres already had a team option in place for 2008 but ripped it up in lieu of the new deal.

"Let's not wait," general manager Kevin Towers said. "We certainly had an option next year for Chris. ... These are the type of individuals we want wearing the Padres name on the front of their jerseys. These are the type of guys we'd like to have around, the guys that are championship-winning type players."

On Monday night Young ---- who was 11-5 in 2006 and won a playoff start against St. Louis---- outpitched Giants starter Matt Cain in a 1-0 win at Petco Park.

Towers and Young's agent, Lon Babby, watched from Towers' suite.

The terms of the deal will give Young a raise from $600,000 this season to $750,000 along with the signing bonus. Young also receives $2.5 million in 2008, $4.5 million in 2009 and $6.25 million in 2010. The club option in 2011 is for $8.5 million with incentives for special accomplishments.

"This is more than I could have asked for," Young said. "It's a tremendous opportunity for me and my family, and I'm extremely grateful for everything they've done for me."
