Marjorie Mason Farris

February 28, 1920 -- March 13, 2007

Marjorie Mason Farris died peacefully of natural causes on March 13, 2007, surrounded by the love of her family and friends. A music teacher, an artist and the mother of four children, Marjorie lived in Escondido since the late '70s, with her last few years at Redwood Terrace, a community for seniors. The grandfather of a California gold miner, she always claimed to have a little gold dust in her veins.

Marjorie was born in San Jose, grew up in Riverside and attended UCLA, attaining a teaching credential in music. There she met longtime Escondido resident, Ragene Farris, the man she was to marry. Marjorie played the piano while he led singing for the Methodist Wesley Foundation student meetings at UCLA. Marjorie taught music in various schools, including Santa Monica High School and Emerson Junior High before marrying Ragene toward the end of World War II. They started their family in Santa Monica and later moved with their four children to Covina, Calif. In 1947, they began building a cabin at Huntington Lake in the Sierra National Forest, which remains a center of Farris family life.

Marjorie enjoyed sisterhood in two organizations, PEO and Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI), the International Music Fraternity. She was honored for her service in SAI at both local and national levels, including their highest honor, the Ring of Excellence. From 1981-87, she served as chair of the SAI National Philanthropies Board, coordinating fundraising to support young musicians through SAI's many programs.

Late in life, Marjorie revived an early interest in painting, this time studying the medium of watercolors. Many of her friends retain collections of greeting cards, displaying reductions of her paintings. She loved to paint flowers and scenes of nature. Resident of Redwood Terrace enjoyed a show of Marjorie's paintings in August 2005.

In December 2005, Marjorie presented family members with a memoir: "The Alexander Story, as remembered by Marjorie Mason Farris, daughter of Carrie Alexander Mason." This 100-page book details the lives of her grandparents and their four daughters, of whom Marjorie's mother was youngest. It includes a rich collection of family photographs, letters and such interesting artifacts as her grandfather's grocery bill from 1882, listing all his provisions for a winter in their High Sierra home near Downieville, Calif.

Robert Dean Ek, Sr.

October 22, 1925 -- April 9, 2007

Robert Dean Ek, Sr. "Bob" passed away April 9, 2007, in San Diego, Calif. He was born to Royal Julius Ek and Margaret Hastie Sneddon, at their family home in Salt Lake City, Utah, October 22, 1925. His birth was minutes ahead of his twin, Richard Sneddon "Dick" and he one of eight children. His family moved to San Diego in January 1926, where Bob eventually met his future bride, Maxine Elizabeth Thomas, while working at a local drive-in restaurant (Keith's) - with him as a cook and her as a car hop.

During World War II, Bob and his twin brother, while only 17 years of age, persuaded their parents to allow them to join the Marines. With a promise from Commander Hall that the boys would never be separated, their mother consented and they served in the Philippines until the end of the war. Their ship returned to San Diego harbor to a hero's welcome on September 22, 1945, with the story of twin brother Marine Sergeants on board making the front page of The San Diego Union newspaper. This article caught Maxine's eye and she caught up with Bob at Camp Miramar shortly thereafter. After a short courtship they started their long life together being married on January 20, 1946, in Yuma, Ariz. San Diego County was their home during 61 years of marriage, which produced six sons and three daughters; Randy, Roger, Royal, Glenda, Elizabeth, Robert Jr., Julia, Ralph and Russell.

After the war, Bob worked as a hod carrier which led him into the plastering trades and eventually to being the sole proprietor of Robert's Construction Company. Bob would ultimately work in San Diego's construction industry for over 50 years. He loved sports; he played sandlot baseball as a young man and always followed the San Diego Padres. Bob and his twin coached championship fast pitch softball teams in 1956 and 1957.

Bob, Maxine and their children were sealed for eternity in the LDS temple at Mesa, Ariz., on November 11, 1953. Bob served in many lay ministry positions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Boy Scout leader, Young Men's President, Elders Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader and Stake Mission President. He especially enjoyed his service with his wife in the LDS Temple in La Jolla. He loved his family, friends and church and was known for his untiring service, charity and compassion toward all he came in contact with. Service to others is where you always found him, and by which he will always be remembered.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Randy, Roger, Royal and Ralph and is survived by his wife, Maxine; daughters Glenda, Liz, Julia; sons Bobby and Russell; and daughter-in-law Laurie; plus 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
