Poway releases 2007 summer concert lineup

POWAY ---- Area residents will get several chances to get out of the house and enjoy some free music this summer when the city hosts a series of outdoor concerts in two local parks.
A lineup posted on the city's Web site shows that the 2007 Summer Concert Series will kick off June 24, when the band Left 4 Dead performs at Lake Poway. Seven more concerts will follow over the next eight weeks, with the shows alternating between the lake and Old Poway Park.
This is the 16th consecutive year the free concerts have been scheduled. City recreation specialist Dave Richards said Monday that he and others who put the new lineup together were aiming for cultural diversity.
"This year, we actually reached out a little bit and researched different styles of music to try and get something different (than previous years)," he said. "We wanted to kind of liven it up."
The result is a lineup that includes some familiar names, including the Kahuna Cowboys, who have participated in the Summer Concert Series before. New entries such as HELP!, a Beatles tribute band, are also on the list.
The city expects to spend about $8,000 to put on the performances, which typically attract 600 to 1,200 spectators each. Sponsors Target stores and Marrokal Construction Co. in Lakeside provided much of the money needed to put on this year's concerts.
The complete lineup is:
- June 24: Left 4 Dead will perform upbeat rock 'n' roll at the lake.
- July 8: Kahuna Cowboys will play their unique blend of bluegrass and early Hawaiian music in the park.
- July 15: HELP!, a Beatles tribute band, will take the stage at Lake Poway.
- July 22: Sue Palmer & her Motel Swing Orchestra will sing the blues at Old Poway Park.
- July 29: The San Diego Cajun Boys will perform their own brand of south Louisiana Cajun French music at the lake.
- Aug 5: The Brombies will show off their country and bluegrass skills in the park.
- Aug. 12: Crossroads will play classic rock music at Lake Poway.
- Aug. 19: The Big Mo Band will perform big band music in Old Poway Park.
Lake Poway is at 14644 Lake Poway Road. Old Poway Park is at 14134 Midland Road.
