'It Runs in the Family' opens tonight

ESCONDIDO -- Patio Playhouse Community Theater will present "It Runs in the Family," a comedy by Ray Cooney, at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, today through May 13, at the theater, 201 E. Grand Ave., Suite 1D, in Escondido.

When they appear at the hospital's doorstep, a happily married doctor must hide his ex-mistress and their illegitimate 18-year-old son from his wife, his boss and 200 colleagues who are waiting for him to deliver a career-making lecture. The production is directed by Sherrie Colbourn.

Youth group to hold family event

ESCONDIDO -- In recognition of National Youth Service Day, Escondido Education COMPACT will hold a community celebration called "Roots in Your Community" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 21 at Pioneer School, 980 N. Ash St.

The free family-oriented event will provide resources to local families about health, education, public safety and civic engagement, as well as entertain children with interactive activities.

Scholarships offered to high school artists

ESCONDIDO -- High school seniors interested in pursuing an education in the fine arts, who are currently enrolled in any Escondido-based high school, are invited to apply for the Escondido Art Association 2007 Visual Art Scholarship. This year, a total of $1,000 will be awarded as scholarships to three outstanding young artists.

Applications for the scholarships are available from high school art teachers and counselors and at the Artists Gallery, 121 W. Grand Ave. Completed artwork must be delivered to the gallery by April 21. Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Judging of the artwork will take place April 23. Cash awards will be presented May 12 at a reception for the featured "Kids Kaleidoscope Art Show" at the gallery. The winning scholarship artwork will be showcased during the month of May in conjunction with the featured art show.

Daley Ranch photo contest set

ESCONDIDO -- Applications are available for the 2007 Daley Ranch Amateur Photography Contest. Instructions and entry forms can be picked up at the entrance to Daley Ranch at the north end of La Honda Drive, Calumet Photography, Escondido Public Library and the Dixon Lake Ranger Station. The city's Web site, http://www.escondido.org/daley, also has downloadable forms.

Photos can be either film or digital; entries will become the property of the Daley Ranch Volunteer Association after the contest. Proceeds from the contest will benefit efforts to restore the Daley Ranch House and make it into an interpretive center.

Contest rules, changed slightly from the last contest, are listed on the application form. Submissions can be made through 5 p.m. April 21. Photographers may submit up to five entries; an application form and entry fee of $5 must accompany each photograph.

Separate color and black-and-white categories include the following themes: scenic view, plants and animals, park visitors and the hand of man. Photos must be taken at Daley Ranch, and any photos deemed to have been taken off trail will not be considered.

The judges will be photographer/author Paul Johnson, photographer/author Bill Evarts and photographer Susan Heller.

Knights of Columbus breakfast on tap

'Rediscover Escondido' on walking tour

ESCONDIDO -- Take a walk and learn about Escondido's past during a free "Rediscovering Escondido" walking tour at 6 p.m. April 24.

The 90-minute tour will start at the southeast corner of Broadway and Grand Avenue and includes stories along "High School Hill." A steep two-block section about halfway through the tour may be a challenge for some, but rewards those who complete it with a terrific view of the surrounding hills.

    Airplane demonstrations planned

    FALLBROOK -- The Palomar RC Flyers model airplane club will show the public radio-controlled model airplanes with flying demonstrations as well as static displays of scale-model airplanes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 22 at the Fallbrook Airpark. This is one of the activities taking place in connection with the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce Avocado Festival.     Fallbrook Airpark plans open house

    FALLBROOK -- Old things, new things and fun things will highlight the Fallbrook Airpark open house set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 22 as part of the activities related to the Avocado Festival taking place the same day. Admission and parking are free.

    Vintage aircraft and a Model A car show are two of the old things visitors will see. The new sheriff's base and helicopter operation center will be open for tours. Fun things will include a realistic flight simulator, water drops from a firefighting helicopter, a U.S. Air Force flyover, an emergency medical display by Mercy Air and model aircraft air shows by the Palomar RC flyers. Federal Aviation Administration representatives will be on hand to answer questions.

    The Friends of the Fallbrook Airpark will serve hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks. The airpark is located at 2155 S. Mission Road. Free shuttle bus service will be available between the airpark and the festival site downtown.

    Walk and run club continue activities

    FALLBROOK -- The Fun Walk and Run Club will gather at 7:30 a.m. April 21 in the parking lot behind the Fallbrook Library.     Reservations still available for library luncheon

    FALLBROOK -- Reservations are still available for the Friends of the Library Community Read luncheon set for April 26 at Pala Mesa Resort. The 2007 selection is "My Life in France" by Julia Child and her grand-nephew Alex Prud'homme. Doors open at 11 a.m. There also will be a silent auction, an opportunity drawing and some special guests.

    Prud'homme is this year's guest speaker. Besides the book he wrote with Child, he is author of "The Cell Game: Sam Waksal's Fast Money and False Promises," and "Fate of ImClone's Cancer Drug" that details the 2002 ImClone scandal, which implicated Martha Stewart, and "Forewarned: Why the Government Is Failing to Protect Us -- And What We Must Do to Protect Ourselves" with Michael Cherkasky, CEO, president and director at Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc.

    Prud'homme's writing career also includes business profiles for BusinessMonth, coverage of national affairs at Time magazine, crime stories for People magazine, business book ghost writer, freelance writer for The New York Times and contributor to The New Yorker and Vanity Fair. He will be available to sign copies of the book following lunch.

    Fallbrook wins March cribbage match

    VISTA -- More than 35 cribbage players recently gathered at the Vista Elks Lodge for the monthly Senior Cribbage Challenge. When the pegs and boards were put away, the Fallbrook team had won again. Fallbrook won 71 games to Oceanside's 55.

    The top player of the match was Eileen Haworth of Oceanside who won six games with two skunks. In second place was Fallbrook's Luella Brotherton who also had six wins but only one skunk. In third and fourth were Ted Tenenbaum, Fallbrook, and Nicki Newvine, Oceanside, who each had six wins without a skunk.

    The next four places were Fallbrook peggers Eileen Barnes, Ed Wozniak, Obie Weeks and Tom Waterbury who each had five wins.

    The $25 gift card donated by the Fallbrook Albertsons store was won by Frank Cardiff

    The matches are held on the fourth Thursday of the month and consist of seven games. The next match will be held April 26 at the Vista Elks Lodge 1947 E Vista Way. Play begins at 12:30 p.m. Those who want lunch are welcome to come at 11:30 a.m.

    Blood drive scheduled

    BONSALL -- The San Diego Bloodmobile will accept donations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 23 at a blood drive hosted by UltraStar Cinemas at 5265 S. Mission Road. The bloodmobile will be parked in the parking lot.

    The first 15 donors will receive two free movie passes. Donors 16 through 35 will receive one free movie pass.

    Participants also will have the opportunity to join the blood bank's new Donor Difference Program, which includes access to an online store for donors and the ability to track cholesterol, pulse and blood pressure after each donation.

    Fundraiser to benefit agency helping abused children

    DEL MAR -- Chefs from 14 of the acclaimed San Diego restaurants will offer samples of their signature dishes at the fundraiser to benefit Casa de Amparo from 1 to 4 p.m. April 22 during the "Meet the Chefs of Del Mar" culinary event at the Hilton Del Mar, 15575 Jimmy Durante Blvd. Proceeds from the event will benefit Casa de Amparo, a nonprofit agency providing care for abandoned, abused and severely neglected children throughout San Diego County.     Mock train robberies planned

    POWAY -- Mock train robberies of the Poway-Midland steam locomotive will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 21 and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22 at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road, as part of year-long celebration of the train's centennial.
