CAMP PENDLETON -- A Jeep Cherokee veered off Interstate 5 early Tuesday in the Camp Pendleton area, injuring the driver and his female companion, authorities said.

Officer Tom Kerns of the California Highway Patrol said the driver, 23-year-old Billy Joe Burrus of Oceanside, was later arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence.

It wasn't known yet why the Jeep careened off the highway's northbound lanes at 1:50 a.m. and overturned into the weeds, south of Las Pulgas Road and north of Oceanside, Kerns said.

"The vehicle was smoking and they were trapped," said the officer.

Camp Pendleton firefighters responded.

Kerns said Burrus's passenger, Lisa Rexilius, no age or address available, suffered moderate to severe injuries.

A helicopter flew her to Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla. Burrus was taken there by ambulance, Kerns said.
