Paula Coover, 77
ESCONDIDO -- Paula Coover, 77, died after a stroke on Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at Palomar Medical Center.
Mrs. Coover enjoyed traveling and camping with her husband after his retirement. She enjoyed her friends at Madrid Manor in San Marcos, the Joslyn Seniors of Escondido, and the Escondido Grandmothers' Club.
Mrs. Coover was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, George Coover, who died in 2000. She is survived by her son, Steve Griffin, and seven grandchildren.
Anne Francis, 89
CARLSBAD -- Anne L. Francis, 89, died Friday, April 27, 2007, in a local convalescent home.
Born August 20, 1917, in Alberta, Canada, she worked for Boeing Corp. in Canada before coming to San Diego County 28 years ago. She was a retail sales clerk for five years. She was a member of the Smooth Dancers Club, the Daughters of the British Empire and the Palomar Orchid Club.
Mrs. Francis is survived by her husband of 56 years, Don W. Francis of Carlsbad; and sister Miami Fish of San Marcos.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, at Tyler Court Apartments Clubhouse, 3363 Tyler Street, Carlsbad. Cremation and interment will be private.

Steven Gunzburg, 62
ENCINITAS -- Steven Edward Gunzburg, 62, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007. He was diagnosed with cancer eight months ago.
Born in Los Angeles on July 15, 1944, he lived in Encinitas for eight years. He attended Beverly Hills High School, UCLA and USC, and was an excellent athlete, especially in track and football. He was in the construction industry and built houses in Malibu.
Mr. Gunzburg is survived by is daughter, Sara of Encinitas; mother Miriam of Carlsbad; sister Marti Bruger of Carlsbad, and former wife Jennifer of Encinitas.
He was buried at Eternal Hills Cemetery in Oceanside.
Peter Hamborg, 88
CARDIFF -- Peter Milton Hamborg, 88, died Thursday, April 26, 2007, at his home in Cardiff-by-the-Sea.
Born Jan. 21, 1919, in Roscoe, Ill., he lived in Cardiff for six years. He retired from the Costa Mesa School District in 1984. Before moving to California in 1968 he was a farmer in Illinois. He loved nature.
Mr. Hamborg was preceded in death by his grandson, Boaz Hamborg in April of 1994. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norma Hamborg of Cardiff; sons and daughters-in-law Peter and Kathy Hamborg of Huntington Beach and Chuck and June Hamborg of Kathleen, Ga; daughters and sons-in-law Beth and David Nordstrom of Tacoma, Wash., and Jeanelle and Greg Trancone of Cardiff; 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service, officiated by the Rev. Chuck Hamborg, is scheduled at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Eternal Hills Memorial Chapel, 1999 El Camino Real, Oceanside. Interment is planned later this summer at Roscoe Cemetery in Roscoe, Ill.

Elena Hermosillo, 82
ESCONDIDO -- Elena Garcia Hermosillo, 82, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.
Born May 28, 1924, in Zacatecas, Mexico, she lived in Escondido for nearly 50 years. She immigrated to the United States in 1958. She was a member of the San Diego Church of Christ and served many years in the Spanish ministry with her husband, Jose Hermosillo. She enjoyed music, traveling, cooking for her grandchildren, gardening and raising birds.
Mrs. Hermosillo was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Hermosillo. She is survived by her twin daughters, Leticia Munoz and Patricia Gearhart, both of Escondido; son Joe Hermosillo of Coppell, Texas; sisters Rebecca Garcia, Alfredina Garcia and Graciela Garcia; brother Dagoberto Garcia, all of Mexico; and eight grandchildren.
A public memorial service will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the North County Church of Christ, 130 Woodward Ave., Escondido. Call (760) 745-7732 for information. All friends and family are welcome at the service. Her cremains will be buried at a private service at Oak Hill Memorial Park, 2640 Glen Ridge Road, Escondido.
Marlene Jones, 69
OCEANSIDE -- Marlene J. Jones, 69, died Friday, April 27, 2007, at her home in Oceanside.
Born June 25, 1937, in Oakland, she lived in Oceanside for 34 years. She was retired from the Oceanside Unified School District where she worked as a cook. She enjoyed baking, cooking, travel, crocheting and arts and crafts.
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Jones Sr., in September of 1986. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Randy Van Dusen of Oceanside, Tony and Liana Tallay of Antioch, and Frank Jones Jr. of Oceanside; daughters Donna Van Dusen of Oceanside and Debbie Waterman of Concord; sister and brother-in-law Joanne and Randy Chapman of Vista; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Oceanside Mortuary, 602 South Coast Highway, with a funeral service officiated by the Rev. Susan Scott immediately afterward. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Loraine Hoover, 84
CARLSBAD -- Loraine Elizabeth Hoover, 84, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at home in Carlsbad from complications of cancer.
Born Feb. 10, 1923, in Earlham, Iowa, she moved to Carlsbad in 1986 after retiring from the Department of the Army after almost 24 years of service. She worked and later volunteered at several local chambers of commerce, visitors centers and at Scripps Hospital. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii.
Mrs. Hoover was preceded in death by her son William in 1964 and her husband, Cecil Hoover, in 1979. She is survived by her son Steven; daughter-in-law Joyce; granddaughter Jennifer and her husband Don Long; brother-in-law Roy Hoover; sister-in-law Karen Hoover and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial gathering will be held at her home Friday, May 4, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Frederick Leidel Jr., 75
OCEANSIDE -- Frederick Leidel Jr., 75, died Thursday, April 26, 2007.
Born Oct. 15, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio, he lived in Oceanside for 24 years. He retired as a technical sergeant in U.S. Marine Corps. He was a Master Mason of Northern Lights Lodge; member of Laughlin Lodge of O Ton Ta La Grotto in Toledo, Ohio; past Monarch of Quetta Grotto San Diego; past president of the California Arizona Nevada Grotto Association; past president of the Camp Pendleton #243 National Sojourners; and president of the Camp Pendleton Chapter #243 Heroes of '76.
Mr. Leidel is survived by his wife of 56 years, Arlene; daughter Cheryl Leidel of Oceanside; daughter and son-in-law Carol and Elmer Reichow of Millbury, Ohio; son and daughter-in-law Gary and Lorraine Leidel of Vista; brothers and sisters-in-law James and Barbara Leidel of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Nelson and Alice Leidel of Key West, Fla.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation and viewing are scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. today, May 1, at Eternal Hills Mortuary, 1999 El Camino Real in Oceanside, followed by a memorial service from 7 to 8 p.m..

William Vergeer, 67
ESCONDIDO -- William Peter Vergeer, 67, died at home from the complications of colon cancer on Saturday, April 28, 2007.
Mr. Vergeer was born in Alphen ann de Ryn, Holland, on Sept. 22, 1939. He immigrated to the United States in 1959, after completing agricultural school in Holland. He owned a landscaping business for 20 years, and later grew greenhouse foliage plants. He served in the U.S. National Guard from 1963 to 1969. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and sang in the choir for 47 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and Grand Knight or two years. He supported the Right to Life movement and also raised money to aid his two missionary brothers in Uganda and Malaysia. He enjoyed traveling, music, family soccer games, bird watching and hiking. He loved gardening and nature, and in his final months his favorite thing to do was to walk in his garden.
Mr. Vergeer was preceded in death by his brother the Rev. Henk Vergeer and two grandchildren, Hannah and Titus Vergeer. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Lida Vergeer of Escondido, sons and daughters-in-law Ed and Kristina Vergeer of Escondido, and Tony and Cathy Vergeer of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; son Mike Vergeer of Santa Barbara; daughters and sons-in-law Marisca and Frank Munoz of Oceanside, Lori and Eric Redman of Poway and Christy and John Woolsey of Murrieta; brothers Aad, Theo, Yos, Louis, Sjaak, Bert and Ferd; sister Nel; and 13 grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, May 3, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Escondido. Services will follow at 10 a.m. The graveside service and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. May 3.

Marcia Wilson, 82
ESCONDIDO -- Marcia L. Wilson, 82, died from complications of Alzheimer's disease on Friday, April 6, 2007, in Prescott, Ariz., where she was living.
She was born in Albany, N.Y., on Feb. 13, 1925. She served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and was based at Camp Pendleton. She lived in Escondido for 10 years before returning to New York in 1980.
Ms. Wilson is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Don and Linda Wilson and Jim and Deborah Wilson, all of Ft. Smith, Ark.; daughters and sons-in-law Lyn and Nick Waynick of Chino Valley, Ariz., and Nancy and Steve Schmidt of Escondido; brother Lowell Markham of Albany, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
There will be a private memorial service in Albany on May 19.

Helen Bendelow, 81
SUN CITY ---- Helen Marion Bendelow, 81, died Thursday, April 12, 2007, in Rancho Mirage.
Mrs. Bendelow was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and lived in Sun City from 1981 until 2004 when she moved to Rancho Mirage. She worked as a photo colorist, adding color to black and white photos. During World War II she worked as a civilian for the Army Air Force. She and her husband were members of the lawn bowling club in Sun City, and was also involved in alley bowling and was senior tournament director for 17 years at Sun City Bowl.
Mrs. Bendelow was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Bill Bendelow, who died in 1999. She is survived by daughters Mary Folkerts of York, Neb., Janice Klein of Rancho Mirage, and Susan Bendelow of Ozark, Mo.; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. May 4 at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. The family suggests memorial donations to the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice Program of Palm Desert.
