Southwest Riverside County Community News Briefs: Temecula Elks name Citizen of the Year

Ken Smith, president and co-founder of Southwest Traders Inc., a food service distribution company based in Temecula, was selected as Citizen of the Year by the Temecula Valley Elks. The club annually honors someone who gives back to the community.

Smith began his business in 1976 as a one-man van operation delivering natural foods and fresh juices to customers in North San Diego County. Today, his company has six warehouses providing coverage to 14 western states, carrying 3,500 products, employing more than 330 people and serving more than 4,500 customers.

Smith has donated to many Murrieta and Temecula schools and the Grad Night programs. He has also donated to numerous college wrestling and soccer programs and has sponsored and coached youth baseball teams and sponsored adult softball teams. Smith founded the Southwest Soccer Club, an elite youth soccer club, and built the John Blanche Soccer Complex on Diaz Road.

Smith and his wife, Christina, were married in 1983. They live in Temecula with their five sons.

Civic association plans sale

SUN CITY -- A parking lot sale to benefit clubs of the Sun City Civic Association will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The 10th annual sale will be in the parking lot of the association at the corner of Sun City and Cherry Hills Blvd.

Many of the clubs will be selling the items they have made as part of their activities.

Cinco de Mayo dance Saturday

TEMECULA -- A Cinco de Mayo-themed ballroom dance will be held from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Temecula Community Center.

Dancing will be to waltz, Foxtrot, swing and Latin music from deejay John Irwin.

Dorland to present art, music walk

WARNER SPRINGS -- Tickets are on sale for the seventh annual Dorland Mountain Arts Colony's Art & Music Walk in the Vineyards that will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Shadow Mountain Vineyards & Winery.

Tickets cost $20 in advance and $25 at the event. The price includes admission, appetizers, wine tasting and entertainment by Musicians Workshop and other regional musicians.

Visitors can see artists, including painters, sculptors, ceramicists, crafters, wearable art designers and jewelers, and displays of their original works of art. Proceeds benefit art outreach programs and operations of Dorland Mountain Arts Colony.

Muslim Bridges events planned

TEMECULA -- The Muslim Bridges program, a campaign designed for young Muslims to offer presentations and public education on Islam, will continue next week.

"Islam, a Closer Look" will be presented at 11 a.m. Sunday at Shivela Middle School, 24515 Lincoln Ave., Murrieta, and 10:45 a.m. May 12 at Grace Mellman Library, 41000 County Center Drive, Temecula.

Teen art club starts new session

TEMECULA -- The next session for the Teen Art Club will be held Monday to June 4 at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater.

The club offers art instruction in a casual environment for children ages 12 to 17. Many different types of art projects are completed. The cost for the session is $75. Registration is through the Temecula Community Services Department.

Nominations sought for service award

The Community Foundation is seeking nominations for Community Volunteer of the Year and Executive Director of the Year. The recipients will be honored for their service and commitment to helping others.

Nominees for either award must have been with their organization for at least three years. Their agencies must be located and providing services in either Riverside or San Bernardino county.

Genealogy group to hear Europe

WILDOMAR -- Gene Cheney will talk about how to locate European ancestors who emigrated to America when the Lake Elsinore Genealogical Society meets from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Cheney is director of Hemet Family History Center and has been doing genealogical research for more than 50 years.

Women's networking group to meet

    The day allows parents with concerns about their children's speech to get a formal screening conducted by a certified speech therapist for $5.

    Pet events set for Sunday

    MURRIETA -- Animal Friends of the Valleys will have its fifth annual Strut Your Mutt dog walk Sunday at California Oaks Sports Park. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the walk at 10.

    Prizes will be awarded to the top pledge-takers. There will also be free T-shirts and gift bags and live entertainment.

    The second annual Pet Adoption Faire will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Albertsons on Winchester Road in Murrieta. There will be a variety of animals available for adoption, such as dogs, cats, rabbits, potbellied pigs, guinea pigs, rats, mice and hamsters.

    There will be clowns and face painting, a barbecue, animal demonstrations and the Temecula Police Department posse will attend with their horses. Admission is free. Proceeds from adoption fees will be donated to Friends of Rescued Mastiffs.
