AmeriCorps Week to include reunion

ESCONDIDO -- The number of Americans who have taken the AmeriCorps pledge to "get things done for America" and dedicated themselves to service in exchange for an education award will pass the half-million mark this spring, just one of the many achievements that the first-ever AmeriCorps Week is recognizing this week.

The locally-based AmeriCorps program, COMPACT Community Collaborative Corps, is celebrating the week by hosting presentations for high school seniors who will be graduating this June to introduce them to this service opportunity.

    Caregiver essay contest under way

    VISTA -- The Home Instead Senior Care office in Vista is holding its second "Give a Caregiver a Break" essay contest to honor family caregivers for their tireless service. The contest is sponsored by Home Instead, a provider of nonmedical companionship and home care for seniors, and Caring Today magazine.

    In 500 words or less, family caregivers can tell their caregiving experiences, including the challenges they have faced, how they have embraced their role as a caregiver for a senior loved one and how a Home Instead Caregiver could make a difference.

    Volunteers needed for walk/run

    CARLSBAD -- Carlsbad Police Department's motor officers recently competed against motor officers from throughout the West at the Southwest Police Motorcycle Training and Competition. More than 125 officers from Arizona, California, Nevada and New Mexico competed in the annual event April 28 in Tucson, AZ. The Carlsbad Police Department team, comprised of Sgt. Chris Boyd and officers Alonso DeVelasco, George Hart and Rodney Mortensen, took the third place team award. Officer DeVelasco was awarded fourth place in the individual category.

    Discover Archeology Day planned

    First Presbyterian Church women gather

    OCEANSIDE -- Women of the First Presbyterian Church of Oceanside will gather for devotions, lunch and a program at 11:30 a.m. May 22 in the Fellowship Hall of the church at 2001 El Camino Real.
