North San Diego County Community News Briefs: 'Pirates' to attack Maritime Museum

SAN DIEGO -- Re-enactors from the Naval Historical Education Foundation will stage a pitched battle between blood-thirsty pirates and the Royal Navy for control of the HMS Surprise at the Maritime Museum of San Diego on May 26 and 27.
All ages are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite pirate to compete in a costume contest and tour the museum's "Pirates of the Pacific" exhibit between shows. There will be two shows daily at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The shows are included with museum admission. Admission prices range from $8 to $12.

MiraCosta LVN graduation is Thursday

Bird-watching field trip offered
VISTA -- The Palomar Audubon Society will offer a bird-watching field trip to the Anstine-Audubon Nature Preserve and Rancho Guajome Adobe on May 26.
Participants will meet at 8 a.m. at Rancho Guajome Adobe County Park, 2210 N. Santa Fe Ave., and then carpool to the preserve. Afterward, the group will return to the adobe to observe additional bird species.

PFLAG group to meet May 27
CARLSBAD -- Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, or PFLAG, a parent-led support and information organization, will meet at 2 p.m. May 27 at the Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 2020 Chestnut Ave.
PFLAG invites anyone having difficulties understanding gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender issues to attend the meeting, especially when family relationships are disrupted. Family members, as well as GLBT people, are invited to join in discussions of mutual support.

Trash service will be delayed one day
NORTH COUNTY -- EDCO Waste & Recycling Services will not perform residential collection services May 28, Memorial Day.
There will be a one-day delay during the week of May 28 for residential waste and recycling collection service for customers in San Marcos, Encinitas, Escondido, Poway, Vista, Fallbrook, Ramona, San Diego, Lemon Grove, La Mesa, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City and the unincorporated areas of the county. This includes Fallbrook Waste & Recycling Services, Escondido Disposal and Ramona Disposal.
Waste and recycling collection services for commercial businesses will be unaffected by the holiday and will be provided on the regularly scheduled service day.

Club plans square dance, offers class
VISTA -- The Ocean Wavers Square Dance Club will hold its "Aloha Nights" dance June 1 at the Vista Townsite Community Center, 642 Vista Village Drive. Jim Smith will call and Judy Keller Smith will cue. Prerounds will begin at 7:30 p.m., followed by squares from 8 to 10:15.
In addition, the club will offer a 17-week beginners square dance class from 7 to 8:30 p.m. starting May 31 at the Vista Townsite Community Center. The first session is free; cost thereafter is $4 per week.

Encinitas Pops Concert planned
ENCINITAS -- The Coastal Communities Concert Band will present its second Encinitas Pop Concert, "A Celebration of America," at 2 p.m. June 3 at the Encinitas Community/Senior Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive.
The band will perform patriotic selections, music from Broadway and Hollywood, marches and big-band music. In addition, students from the San Dieguito Union High School District will join the band on several selections, and scholarships will be awarded to the top students to further their music studies.

'High Tea' to benefit Lupus Foundation
RANCHO BERNARDO -- The Lupus Foundation of Southern California will host an Afternoon High Tea Fundraiser from 2 to 4 p.m. June 3 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, 17550 Bernardo Oaks Drive.
Guests can sample a variety of fine teas while learning about their history and benefits from certified tea specialist Darlene Fahl-Brittian. The event also will feature a private shopping experience, with boutique vendors offering everything from jewelry to fashionable clothing to home accents and decor.

NORTH COUNTY ----The bi-annual fundraising soiree for Center ARTES at Cal State San Marcos will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. June 3 at the Rancho Santa Fe home of Catherine and Bob Goldsmith.
