PICKS OF THE WEEK
1. The striper bite at Silverwood Lake is excellent this week with a lot of fish from two to 10 pounds reported., and while the striper bites at Pyramid and Castaic are rivaling this action, we're keeping Silverwood in the top slot. The fish are literally showing all around the lake, but the dam area -- the inlet more precisely -- has been a hot spot. Most of the fish are showing on anchovies drifted from boats or cast out from shore with little or no weight and allowed to flutter down to the bottom and then worked in and cast out again. Also some fish showing on jigs, spinners, spoons, and swimbaits. For updates on the action, call the Silverwood County store at 760-389-2423 or the marina at 760-389-2299.
2. Diamond Valley Lake's has the best trout bite in the region, and only Big Bear Lake is remotely close. There are still a lot of freshly planted trout around the marina and holdover fishing showing along the dams at DVL. A lot of fish over five pounds have been reported in the past week, and the best fish was a seven-pound class holdover fish. Trolling in 10 to 40 feet of water is the best way to get fish, but shore anglers fishing floating baits and tossing small lures also scoring. For updates on this action, call the marina at 951-926-7201 or Last Chance Bait & Tackle in Hemet at 951-658-7410.
3. The crappie bite at Henshaw held this spot last week, but the crappie action at Wohlford is as good or better and the fish are bigger this week. Top action is in 10 to 15 feet off Bass Point and near Crappie Rock. Small golden shiners and small finger jigs are the best baits, and crappie to 2-10 reported this week. For more information, call 760-839-4346 or go to www.wohlfordlake.com.
FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS
TROUT: There is also an excellent bite on both recent plants and holdover fish at Diamond Valley, and good action at Silverwood, Piru and Perris. The trout season throughout Southern California is winding down on low elevation waters. There is still fair action at Santa Ana River Lakes, Corona Lake, Irvine Lake, and Hesperia Lake. Jess Ranch in Hesperia might have the best bite. In San Diego County, only Cuyamaca continues to have a consistently good bite. The entire Eastern Sierra Nevada and Kern River in the Western Sierra are good, too.
LARGEMOUTH BASS: Still mostly good. The bass are mostly in a post-spawn mode with lots of males still in the shallows protecting nests or fry. Casitas, Diamond Valley, Castaic, Piru, Pyramid, Cachuma, Skinner, Perris, and Silverwood are all pretty good. In San Diego County, Barrett (if you can get a permit) is wide open, and San Vicente is good. El Capitan and Lower Otay are worth fishing. Isabella is very good with some quality fish. The lower Colorado River is also good with some excellent reports, especially from the backwaters. Also some decent smallmouth catches in this same region.
STRIPED BASS: For Southern California waters, Silverwood, Pyramid, Skinner, and Castaic are all very good picks with the bites improving at all four each week. While most of the fish at all these reservoirs are two to five-pound class fish, there are a lot of bigger stripers. Silverwood has a lot of fish in the nine pound class, and Castaic has been cranking out 17 to 20-plus pounders each of the past two weeks. Also some bigger fish at Skinner and Pyramid. The bite is on swimbaits, shad, anchovies, and sardines. On the Colorado River, bites are improving in Mohave, Havasu, and the lower river, and a few big fish were reported again at Willow Beach over the past week. Mead has also been a good bet, especially in Vegas Wash.
PANFISH: A number of crappie bites are good. Wohlford, Henshaw, Lopez, and Santa Margarita are all top bets. Some bluegill and redear bites are also finally starting to take off with fish at Skinner, Perris, Cachuma, Casitas, Diamond Valley, and San Vicente. More warm weather this week could continue to kick more and more of these bites into gear -- especially for bluegill and redear. Puddingstone was one taking off this week.
CATFISH: On the Colorado River, especially the larger irrigation drainage ditches in the Blythe, Palo Verde, and Yuma areas, the catfish action is good. Several 20 to 30-pound class flatheads reported from this region again this past week. Catfish plants were starting this week at more urban waters, including all the San Bernardino County Park lakes, Santa Ana River Lakes, Corona Lake, Irvine Lake, and others will follow suit in the coming weeks. Hesperia Lake has been an excellent bet with catfish to 50-plus pounds reported this week. Sturgeon planted at Hesperia Lake are still showing with a number of 25 to 30-pound class fish landed. The 50 to 150-pound fish planted in Santa Ana River Lakes and Corona Lake last month are mostly being hooked and lost., but a couple were landed at SARL this week.
SAN BERNARDINO MOUNTAIN WATERS
SILVERWOOD: Largemouth bass action excellent in the coves on nightcrawlers, silver or gold Panther Martins, or plastic worms. Mike Jones, Phoenix, caught a 7-4 largemouth on a nightcrawelr in Cleghorn. The striper bite is still excellent off the docks and main points on anchovies. The inlet is also producing a lot of better quality fish to 10 pounds for anglers drifting anchovies or hurling swimbaits into moving water. Tom Gates, Moreno Valley, caught a six-pound striper on anchovies in Cleghorn, and many anglers have reported stringers of fish, and most fish to nine or 10 pounds, over the past week. The bluegill, carp, catfish and trout bites are all fair to good. The trout are hitting meal worms or nightcrawlers. The fish are up into the four-pound range.
