Council choosing to divide Escondido
By: RANDY HORTON - Commentary: | ∞
"Escondido is a diverse and vibrant community that celebrates its history and Hispanic influence."
This encouraging statement from the city of Escondido's Web page makes sense in light of the city's demographics. The city's population of 138,000 is ethnically divided between 49 percent white and 42 percent Hispanic.
However, recent acts of the City Council have not been in the best interest of Escondido. No subject has been more divisive than illegal immigration. With a demographic split, no subject has greater potential to polarize Escondido than illegal immigration. But rather than leave well enough alone and let the federal government deal with this complex issue, the City Council decided to take the bull by the horns.
What would motivate a City Council to willingly rip the fragile tapestry that binds Escondido together? No one who loves Escondido would set out with such determination to destroy the city that they had sworn to uphold.
Speculation about motives can often be fruitless. However, one member of the Escondido City Council has not been shy about her aspirations for higher political office. The subject of illegal immigration is a lightning rod, energizing a small but powerful base of support. Such a highly motivated support base could propel a candidate to higher office, all other factors being equal.
Speculation about the benefits and detriments of illegal immigration can often be fruitless. Hard evidence is scarce, because illegal immigrants are naturally adverse to polls and surveys. No statistically valid conclusions can be drawn from the abundance of anecdotal evidence that is available.
Recently, there was an interesting story on PBS about a Hispanic American hero. Although originally an illegal immigrant, he obtained his green card and signed up for the Marines. While in Iraq, he was killed in the battle of Fallujah. He threw his body over a live grenade, willingly sacrificing his life to save the lives of his four comrades.
Why are many evangelical Christians so passionate in their demonizing of illegal immigrants? The primary passion of evangelical Christians is supposed to be sharing the gospel of salvation with the lost.
Illegal immigrants are saving evangelical Christians the cost and effort of sending missionaries to Central and South America. Illegal immigrants are transporting themselves to the doorstep of evangelical Christians. Illegal immigrants are ready to hear the gospel of salvation! American evangelical Christians have lost sight of their primary mission. Their willing participation in the demonizing of illegal immigrants shows how far from God's purposes they have strayed.
Escondido City Council member Marie Waldron ( "Amnesty bill an outrage," Community Forum, May 27) is right about one point.
Now is the time for all good men and women to stand up and be counted. Let your federal elected representatives know that you oppose, with every moral fiber of your being, the demonizing of illegal immigrants.

Thank you Randy for having the courage to encourage all of those who apathetic on this issue to stand up and say enough is enough. Bravo!!!

Reardon wrote on May 30, 2007 10:23 PM:Gosh, I wonder if former Mayor of El Centro used city money to help enforce federal laws against bank robbery, or if his police force refused to participate in such federal activity? Perhaps he believes in selective enforcement, and would explain to us which federal laws he supports enforcing, and which ones, not.
Oceanside Resident wrote on May 30, 2007 10:39 PM:Sanchez- you took the words out of my mouth Oceanside IS a sanctuary for every illegal activity. We have dangerous pedophiles, dangerous register child sex offenders, and prostitution, crack addicts and the biggest gang injunction in the county of San Diego. With thousands of illegal aliens and the illegal activity that comes with them; like 30 people living in a 3 bedroom single family home, with dozens of cars parked on the lawns and streets. Homes are filled with rental trailers something unheard of and unsanitary, with portable toilets parked on the curb and Mexican cactus sprawling in every fence to keep the cops out. I invite the entire city counsel to come and visit my lost middle class neighborhood into one of the new converted biggest ghettos extension of El Posole, Mesa Margarita and a little of Townsite. Maybe we as CITIZENS of this city should start filing class action lawsuits against the entire Oceanside city counsel for our property loss and placing our families in dangerous situations and proliferating illegal activity into our neighborhoods.
Quit making Marie the villian here... wrote on May 30, 2007 11:01 PM:Excuse me. Last time I looked, the United States of America has defined borders and laws. (Oh, I forgot, they don't have laws in Mexico, so this may be a foreign concept to most.)....For those of you begging to make Oceanside a sanctuary city, we never hear of what you plan to give back to this nation. Just because you have a job here, you think you are somehow entitled to the same rights of American citizens but without the responsibilities? No one has told you yet that you are being played big time, even bigger than we citizens are being played? Hmm...and to the author of this article, try reading the modern-day 30 Pieces of Silver from operation bodycount and pray for those families (uh, your fellow American citizens, by the way) because those facts don't lie...

After the 1968 amnesty bill by Ted Kennedy, Illegal immigration shot up to today's figures (use any numbers out there - the smallest is 12 million). How can any staff approve within 24 hours as required the applications by the illegals? Your accounting expertise, should be able to figure if one person can review 10 applications a day, it would take 1,200,000 hours. 100 staff persons would need 12,000 days! Impossible. That is only one of dozens of impossibilities in the amnesty bill.

Illegal aliens get legalization without any penalty! No fines, no payment of back taxes, no touch-back, no English language requirement, etc. The Federal Government gets only one business day to perform a background check. An illegal alien needs to be employed only on the day of the application to get legalization.

Using that logic we should allow all lawbreakers, muderers, rapists, child molesters, etc. to immigrate here because they are in need of salvation. No. You give the lawbreakers the message of salvation in jail or in prison... preferably in their own country.

You are saying God wants people to break laws because it will save his "believers" money by not having to send missionaries into other countries. I am sure God wants these lawbreakers to steal other people's identities, illegally use welfare, drive without licenses and kill innocent people just so we don't need to send out as many missionaries. I am not demonizing illegal aliens, I just want them to play by the same rules as everyone else, including the legal immigrant that I am married to.
GFN wrote on May 31, 2007 8:02 AM:Mr. Horton, the beginning of your article should read, ""Escondido is a diverse and vibrant Hispanic community that celebrates its history and minority Asian and Caucasion influence." It's not a matter of Hispanics infiltrating the City, it's the overwhelming number of them. The problem?...well, you state it in your article, "But rather than leave well enough alone and let the federal government deal with this complex issue, the City Council decided to take the bull by the horns." You see, Mr. Horton, the federal government HAS NOT AND DOES NOT DEAL WITH THIS COMPLEX PROBLEM! That's why the leaders of the City of Escondido are doing what they are doing...it's not demonizing, it's preservation of an American quality of life, and we have a right to do that.
Former mayor? wrote on May 31, 2007 9:09 AM:The article by Randy Horton would be disgusting if written by an ordinary citizen, but is especially so when written by a former elected mayor. Those in his position should be for law and order, not turning a blind eye to it. I wonder, does he also support those who vandalize public and personal property with graffiti, rob banks, drive drunk, drive without insurance or engage in other law-breaking activities? I don’t care what Marie Waldron’s personal political aspirations are, she is trying to do the right thing for the city. You know, return it to American citizens who actually care about their city and their country. Her recent “Amnesty bill an outrage” article made ten times as much sense as Horton’s. “Council choosing to divide Escondido”? Absolutely. Dividing between law/order and lawlessness sure sounds good to me.
Mind Your Own Business wrote on May 31, 2007 9:48 AM:No one is demonizing illegals, just their act of breaking the law to enter the country which is criminal. The American taxpayer is sick of watching billions of dollars sent back to Mexico while illegals claim poverty when it comes to paying taxes for their health care, education and social services. If you want the city of O'side to foot those bills, Escondido will be happy to help our illegals migrate to your sanctuary city.

Pope wrote on May 31, 2007 11:30 AM:The only moral justification for coming here illegally is if a person is forced to emigrate from their home country as, for example, a refugee or an assylum seeker. Included in 'forced' would be wars, famine, fascism, etc. None of that is happening in Mexico. Like the 49ers, the current wave of immigrants from Mexico are merely looking to live a better life. However, the 49ers waited until it was legal. Wanting to get 'rich' provides no moral justification for illegally entering the United States. It is not unusual for a person, lacking morals, to violate other laws. That unwillingness to voluntarily follow the law is one of the things that make this current illegal immigration invasion so costly to our civic order, institutions, and morals!
Go Home Horton wrote on May 31, 2007 1:26 PM:Horton is way out of line here. This is a man who demonizes other politicians with his disgusting cartoons and then gets put into a important deciding position on the Planning Commission because he is a Mayor Woods cronie. Watching Horton in action he votes favorably for projects neighborhoods don't want and he is supposedly tied to Woods (who put him on the Council)who is the "Big Neighborhood Protector" along the lines of Granny Melba. Doesn't make sense. Horton's attack on evangelicals is obscene. Why does he want to make the evanagelicals the Immigrant Haters. Except for the Catholics, because that is how they increase their ever dwindling scandal prone church most people Christians, atheists, Moslems, agnostics however you want to label people are against this invasion by illegal aliens. Personally, I find Horton to be a detriment to Oceanside and in fact should go back to El Centro where he can lead a city of predominantly illegals. He seems to have better luck with people who don't understand our language and customs than us. One last thing thanks to Mr. Busy Body Horton Tri-City Hospital lost a chance to upgrade its deteriorating, antiquated facilities. Perhaps the next time Horton needs to go to Tri-City emergency room they should let him sit 7 hours only to find out they are transferring him to El Centro Community Hospital. Randy get Lost. for those that are apathetic wrote on May 31, 2007 2:01 PM:Its sad that you are pathetic oh I mean apathetic to their cause, as soon as they get what they want they will stab you in the back because this is their ultimate goal, and your sympathy is just a means to their end. You have no right to give away my country and my money without my permission, and you do not and will not have my permission, read the following passage carefully this is what they are pushing for. This has been in the works for a long time , while bleeding hearts sit back and think that Illegals come here for a better life. No they are coming to take what they believe belongs to them. Are we really going to just give it to them? " In the spirit of a new people that is conscious not only of its proud historical heritage but also of the brutal "gringo" invasion of our territories, we, the Chicano inhabitants and civilizers of the northern land of Aztlán from whence came our forefathers, reclaiming the land of their birth and consecrating the determination of our people of the sun, declare that the call of our blood is our power, our responsibility, and our inevitable destiny. We are free and sovereign to determine those tasks which are justly called for by our house, our land, the sweat of our brows, and by our hearts. Aztlán belongs to those who plant the seeds, water the fields, and gather the crops and not to the foreign Europeans. We do not recognize capricious frontiers on the bronze continent Brotherhood unites us, and love for our brothers makes us a people whose time has come and who struggles against the foreigner "gavacho" who exploits our riches and destroys our culture. With our heart in our hands and our hands in the soil, we declare the independence of our mestizo nation. We are a bronze people with a bronze culture. Before the world, before all of North America, before all our brothers in the bronze continent, we are a nation, we are a union of free pueblos, we are Aztlán. For La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada. "
