SAN DIEGO - A worker was trapped inside a sewage tank on Naval Base Point Loma for more than an hour today before firefighters pulled him out, authorities said.
The man was transported to UCSD Medical Center for treatment, according to Federal Fire Commander Navy Region Southwest. His condition was not immediately reported.
The incident at a fuel-storage site at Holcombe Road and Rosecrans Street was reported shortly after 2 a.m., when a witness told authorities a man working inside the sewage tank hit his head on a ladder and was not able to get out, a Federal Fire dispatcher said.
Firefighters initially planned to use a crane to hoist the man from the tank but determined the positioning was "not right" for such an effort, she said. Crews were then sent down to rescue him.
The man was pulled free shortly before 3:30 a.m., the dispatcher said.
