TEMECULA -- Assisteens of Temecula Valley celebrated its senior graduation and installation of officers for the 2007-08 year June 3.

Assisteens is the teen auxiliary of students from grades 8 to 12 of the Assistance League of Temecula Valley. The teens provide service to the community through community events, as well as their own social activities.

At the installation event, the club distributed donations of $6,700 to Temecula and Murrieta libraries, Great Oak, Temecula, Chaparral, Vista Murrieta and Lake Elsinore high schools, Rancho Damacitas, Oak Grove School and Childhelp USA.

Museum to host Harry Potter workshop

TEMECULA -- The Science of Harry Potter Workshop July 7 at the Temecula Children's Museum will allow children to be immersed into the world of Potter and his friends as the museum transforms into Hogwarts for a day.

Focusing on science rather than magic, students will attend six classes, such as Care of Magical Creatures, Herbology, Astronomy, Divination, Potions and Transfiguration.

Under the direction of the Imagination Workshop's inventor-in-residence, Professor Phineas T. Pennypickle, each class will offer hands-on experiments and activities.

Students are encouraged to come in costume. A Hogwarts-style banquet lunch is included.

Tuition is $125 for the day and space is limited to 16 students per classroom. This workshop is geared toward students ages 7 to 12. Enrollment ends June 25.

Flag Day ceremony Thursday

TEMECULA -- A Flag Day ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Duck Pond Park.

The event, sponsored by Temecula Valley Elks Lodge 2801 and American Legion Post 852, will tell the history of the American flag from Betsy Ross to today.

The ceremony will be held near the veterans' memorial. Attendees should bring their own chair.

The park is at Ynez and Rancho California roads.

Voting machines topic for group

SUN CITY -- Tom Courbat will give a "Save Our Vote" presentation when Riverside County United Communities meets Saturday at Boston Billie's. Breakfast is at 8:30 a.m. and the talk at 9:30.

Anti-war rally Saturday

RIVERSIDE -- Riverside Area Peace & Justice Action group will hold a rally to protest the war in Iraq and ask that American troops be brought home at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The rally will be held at the corner of Tyler Street and the entrance to the Galleria shopping center, just north of Highway 91.

SUN CITY -- The Southwest Chapter of the Green Party will meet at noon Sunday at the Sun City Library.

TEMECULA -- Keith Carlson, treasurer of the California Republican Party, will speak when Temecula Valley Republican Women Federated meet at 11 a.m. Monday at the Sizzler.

TEMECULA -- The Temecula Valley Newcomers Club invites new and prospective members to its monthly luncheon at 11 a.m. Monday at Temeku Hills Country Club.

Author to speak to library friends

MURRIETA -- Author Susan Vreeland will speak when Friends of the Murrieta Library meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday.Ý

Vreeland is an internationally known author of art-related fiction. Her "Girl in Hyacinth Blue" was made into a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie starring Glenn Close. Her newest book, "Luncheon of the Boating Party," takes readers into the lives of impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir and his friends.Ý

Her other books include "The Passion of Artemesia," in which the life of Baroque painter Artemesia Gentileschi is revealed, and "The Forest Lover," about rebel Canadian painter Emily Carr who painted in the British Columbia wilderness.

Art league to seat officers

TEMECULA -- The Temecula Valley Art League will install officers for 2007-08 at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Mary Phillips Senior Center.

The new officers are Mary Davis, acting president; Myrna Boggs, first vice president; Melody Brunsting, second vice president; Laurel Jeninga, secretary; Sue Rogers, treasurer; Ingrid Wright, parliamentarian; and Twilla Leonard, member at large.

Committee chairmen are: galleries, Craig Lewis; publicity, Colleen Baker-Huber; exhibits, Marlys Barskey; Web site, Rodney Johnson; membership, Terry Kvitky; tickets Ina Ramos; Sunshine, Jean Herrick; refreshments, Kathy Stradle; name tags, Luanne Gattegno; and historian and event photographer, Chris Devin.

After the installation, the club will not meet again until Sept. 18.

The club often holds competitions. Lisa Moffimi-MicDieu won Best of Show at spring show May 26. Other awards were: first, Ina Ramos; second, Ingrid Wright; and third, Dewayne Neufeld. Honorable mentions were awarded to Kathy Stradley, Craig Lewis, Twilla Leonard, Ramos, Sue Rogers and Laurel Jeninga.

Women's Connection group to meet

TEMECULA -- Quilting will be the theme when the Temecula Valley Women's Connection gathers for its monthly luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 20 at Pat & Oscar's.

TEMECULA -- An international craft expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Mountain View Community Church.

Car shows this weekend in Murrieta

MURRIETA -- A car show for teens will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday and the city's 37th annual Father's Day Car Show from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, both at California Oaks Sports Park.

Teens 13 to 19 may display everything from an old car they fixed up to brand new wheels.

Participants will receive a T-shirt and various car related items. Raffles will be held throughout the night.

Admission is free to view cars, automotive accessories, performance products and entertainment. Local teen band, 15 North, is scheduled to perform. The registration fee is $20.

The Father's Day show will feature pre-1980 and specialty vehicles, including last year's best in show, a 1939 Convertible Cabriolet.

Registration is from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. with judging at 10 a.m. The awards will be presented at 2 p.m. Registration is $20 before Friday and $25 the day of the show.

BMX show set for Sunday

LAKE ELSINORE -- A free BMX freestyle show will be held Sunday at RPM Cyclery.

The event will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. The freestyle show starts at 3:30. A barbecue and autograph session will follow. Team riders such as Jared Floodman, Muricio Ospina, Joey Hulsey and Ryan Sanchez are expected to perform.

Community band seeks members

TEMECULA -- The Temecula All-City Community band is looking for musicians to participate in the city's Fourth of July Parade. The band is open to musicians of all ages.

Musicians must supply their own instruments, and any instrument that can be used in a marching formation is acceptable.

The band is also looking for color guard members. Middle and high school students can earn community service hours through participation.
