CARLSBAD -- The San Diego Colony of the Society of Mayflower Descendants will hold its Family and Prospective Members Picnic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 30 at Stagecoach Park, 3420 Camino De Los Coches.
Those interested in attending or those who feel their ancestors may have come to America on the Mayflower are encouraged to call Dorothy Schwaner, membership, at (760) 758-3125.
Box lunches for the picnic can be ordered by calling Treasurer Jan Landt at (619) 283-1796 before June 25.

Republican Women to meet
POWAY -- The Rancho Bernardo Republican Women Federated will meet June 15 at the StoneRidge Country Club, 17166 Stoneridge Country Club Lane. Social hour will begin at 11 a.m. followed by the meeting at noon.
Mary Humphries, a longtime leader and activist in the Republican Party, will speak on "The History and Future of the Republican Party and the Federation of Republican Women."

Lou Gehrig Night set at Petco Park
SAN DIEGO -- In recognition of Lou Gehrig's birthday, the ALS Association Greater San Diego Chapter will host Lou Gehrig Night on June 19 at Petco Park.
The ALS Association Greater San Diego Chapter is dedicated to families affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (aka Lou Gehrig's disease) through patient support, advocacy efforts, public awareness and education while enabling research for a cure and improving the quality of life.

Ostomy support group to meet
OCEANSIDE -- The Ostomy Support Group of North County will meet at 1 p.m. June 22 in Assembly Room 1 at Tri-City Medical Center, 4002 Vista Way.
A panel of wound ostomy continence nurses will be available for open discussions, and Ann O'Brian will introduce and talk about new products.
All ostomy patients or those considering ostomy surgery and their caregivers are welcome.

Awareness workshop for women offered
ESCONDIDO -- A free women's awareness and self-defense workshop will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. June 23 at the Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead, 12655 Sunset Drive, across from Westfield North County mall.
Women can learn basic awareness skills and simple self-defense techniques that can give them the confidence needed to get out and get active. Instructor Hal Collier will teach simple-to-put-into-practice methods that can minimize discomfort in any unfamiliar setting.

Gourd show closing reception set
FALLBROOK -- A closing reception for the 11th annual National Fine Art Gourd Show will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. June 23 at the Art Center at Fallbrook, 103 S. Main.
The evening will include music, wine and appetizers. Attendees can enjoy a cello concert by Barbara Martin, meet local gourd artists and enter a contest to guess the number of raw gourds on display.

Hike/Frogwatch workshop offered
VISTA -- Learn about local frogs and toads during a hike/workshop set from 1 to 4 p.m. June 24 at the Dawson-Los Monos Reserve in Vista.
The event will include a hike into the reserve, a workshop on the National Wildlife Federation "Frogwatch" USA volunteer frog and toad monitoring program and possible field observation of at least one local frog species.
Participants can learn about the national program that uses citizen volunteers to collect field data about frogs, how to identify the mating call of several species and how they can help scientists learn why the amphibian population is declining.
The moderate, two-hour hike will be led by biologist and reserve manager Isabelle Kay. Participants will meet in the Buena Vista Park parking lot.

Bachelor/bachelorette auction set
SAN DIEGO -- Fresh Start Surgical Gifts will host its third annual Reds, Whites and Blues Bachelor/ette Auction at 7 p.m. June 26 at Ole Madrid, 755 Fifth Ave.
In the spirit of Fourth of July, the event will feature complimentary glasses of red and white wine and a live blues band for entertainment.
The auction will feature Matt Gallant, Emmy Award-winning host of the Animal Planet's popular series "The Planet's Funniest Animals" from 2000 to 2005, and 14 of San Diego's most eligible men and women in uniform. Bidding starts at $50, with the highest bidder receiving a customized date with the bachelor/bachelorette, including everything from dinner and drinks to a live concert.
Proceeds will benefit Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, a San Diego County-based charity dedicated to giving disadvantaged children with physical deformities free reconstructive surgery.

Golf tourney to benefit Arc
RANCHO BERNARDO -- The Arc of San Diego's fifth annual Hal Clement Charity Golf Tournament will be held June 29 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, 17550 Bernardo Oaks Drive.
Hal Clement, co-anchor for KGTV Channel 10News, has served as the event's host for the past five years. Founded in 1951, the Arc now serves more than 2,500 children and adults with disabilities throughout San Diego County. The tournament is expected to raise more than $25,000 for the organization's Vocational Training Program.
Check-in will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The day will conclude with dinner and an awards ceremony at 6 p.m.
Fees are $150 per player or $550 per foursome. Sponsorship opportunities are available.

Tap dancing group seeks new members
VISTA -- The Toe Tappers, a 50-plus senior tap dancing performance group, has openings for a few more tap dancers.
Male or female dancers should know basic tap steps. There is no charge to participate in the group, which practices every Monday and Thursday morning at the Gloria E. McClellan Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive.

Mediation skills training offered
VISTA -- North County Lifeline will offer a 40-hour basic mediation skills training program from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 3, 10, 17, 23 and 30.
Participants will learn a six-stage mediation process and accompanying communication and facilitation skills.
