Take 5: Tough enough?
By: MARC FIGUEROA - Staff Writer | ∞
Tiger Woods said a 10-handicapper couldn't break 100 at Oakmont Country Club this week. The USGA is at it again, as the U.S. Open setup is as tough as ever. Staff writer Marc Figueroa looks at five other sports that could use some toughening up.
5. Right turn, Clyde
Imagine how much more exciting NASCAR would be if drivers actually had to make a right turn. Or, better yet, make them race on Interstate 15 with all the stupid drivers talking on their cell phones. Talk about a wild ride. Ý
4. Stick it to 'em
Make all baseball players hit with souvenir bats. That would actually make the game extremely boring, but Barry Bonds would never break Hank Aaron's home run record. Anything to keep that juicer out of the record book.
3. Walk-about
Since the basket can't be made smaller, maybe NBA commissioner David Stern could implement a rule penalizing players for taking more than two steps without dribbling. The refs would call it "traveling." Nah, that wouldn't work.
2. Fight club
Bring back bare-knuckles boxing and 100-round fights. From what I gathered watching the recent De La Hoya-Mayweather bout, the modern-day prize fight has become nothing more than "Dancing with the Stars" without leotards. Ý
1. Load up OTL
Require all participants in the annual Over the Line tournament at Fiesta Island to chug two beers before each inning. Oh, wait, they're already doing that. Make it three then. Already done, you say? Man, this game is harder than I thought.
