How much is too much at the movies?
By: MEGAN RUSSELL -- Online Desk | ∞
We all know going to the movies can be expensive. Even if you don't get the five-dollar gallon of soda or the quarter-per-gummy-bear candy, you are still out at least 20 bucks for you and your favorite movie date before you even see the big screen. My personal favorite movie date made a great point last night (as we waited for 'Pirates of the Carribean' with lighter wallets) when he said: "I swear if movies go over 11 bucks, I'm just going to wait for the DVD since it's cheaper." Thought that was a great movie price standard, but it made me wonder what is everyone else's cut off point? Or did that happen already for some?

We are suckers to marketing wrote on Jun 7, 2007 6:14 AM:At least moives are not as destructive to the enviroment. Nontheless, we ae suckers to Madison Avenue. We suck up all the BS the sell to us. Gotta have this and that. The suits attack us when we are babies, and keep up an unrelented attack through our middle ages. Must of us don't realize what suckers we are until we are 40. By that time we have significantly contributed to the worlds demise throught the purchase of thousands of dollars of unnecessary electronics, clothing, new cars and other trappings of Madison AVenues version of THE GOOD LIFE. Wake up America, living well does not mean living like the idiot in the commercial. Bottom line, why drop ten dollars just so you can say you saw the latest movie?
Movie Experience not worth it wrote on Jun 9, 2007 1:17 PM:It's not just the cost, it's the overpriced (and crappy) food, the parking, lines, etc, none of which you have to deal with when you watch it @ home. Most of what gets made these days is junk, the seats are crappy, and you can't see a movie without being constantly interrupted by idiot teens who aren't there to see the movie, but to yak with their friends. If you ask them to be quiet, you get vibed by their multi-tattoed gang-banger buddies. Who needs it! And there's greater selection on pay per view, dvd, or my favorite: Bittorent.
Wait for DVD wrote on Jun 11, 2007 6:15 AM:There is not an actor or actress these days that are worth spending that kind of money on at a movie. If something looks descent then I wait for the DVD and rent for a few bucks. This way I can atleast watch it on my own system in comfort. Hollywood puts out nothing but crap these days. Give me an old black and white anytime

I agree, movie prices are a bit high, but I like to enjoy a good movie on the big screen with a great surround sound system. However, I do have a few requirements. 1. Stadium seating is a must. I won't go to a theater that doesn't have it. 2. Only go to matinées. 3. Only go to night showings if you have a discount coupon. 4. Don't go to the movies hungry. 5. Take your own candy. Day or night, my girlfriend and I typically get in for $7.50 each or less. We usually buy a large drink and share it (free refills at the theaters we go to). I still like to go see movies in the theater (typically not opening weekend, but the week after) but I like to consider myself frugal at the same time. $20 for two people. No sweat. You don't get much for $20 anymore.

Then prices started skyrocketing, and someday I quit even renting -- wait for the sale VHS cuz if you saw the movie twice you could have bought the video! I don't have to brag about being the first on the block to see it, and I don't waste money on movies that turn out duds. I also like sitting in my recliner without a hundred strangers whispering, snickering, babies whining, etc. Hey, for that stuff I should be the one getting paid not the theatre!
korvin wrote on Jun 16, 2007 12:19 PM:Hurray for Hollywood! I think one of lifes' greatest rewards is to enjoy some fine popcorn with butterflavored sauce, while watching the very best entertainment that the good old USA can provide! Screens bigger than any TV set and hi tech speaker systems to boot! Who doesnt like sitting in upholstered chairs! Call me crazy but going to the movies is what embiggens our culture to the rest of the world! See a movie today!
korvin is crazy wrote on Jun 17, 2007 9:02 AM:I haven't gone to a movie theatre in over 5 years. I have a great hdtv and surround sound system. I can pay $3 for pay-per-view, tivo it, and watch it as many times as I want. I can pause it when I have to go to the bathroom, get some more GOOD popcorn or answer the phone. I have nobody else's cell phone, kids, couple making out in front of me...etc. to deal with. Why anyone actually goes to the movies is beyond me. Good luck Hollywod.
Sue wrote on Jun 18, 2007 3:33 PM:I am not a big movie goer anymore. A few years ago I had trouble finding a movie I had not already seen, and even watched ones I did not really think I would like, just to see a different movie. Now due to a combination of the cost and the fact that weekly movie viewing took all the pleasure out of Blockbuster and TV since I had already seen everything, I wait now for an situation with someone where I would rather enjoy a quiet movie than conversation to actually take in a movie.
Be selective wrote on Jun 20, 2007 7:45 AM:Some movies --- but only a few --- really need to be seen on the big screen. Out of Africa, Shakespeare in Love, the Harry Potter films -- they are big screen material full of cinematic sweep and granduer. The rest are pleasant stories that fit well on Blockbuster DVDs at home. Be selective about the films you see out and save a ton.
david wrote on Jun 23, 2007 5:19 PM:We spent Over $32.00 for 2 people to see the new Pirates of the Caribean, including popcorn and drinks last weekend. this weekend we rented 3 movies from Hollywood Video and spent less than $4.00. We have popcorn {4lb bag for $3.00 at Smart & Final} [it won't be over salted] and soda at home so for less than the price of 1 ticket we get 3 movies and popcorn for a couple of months. There aren't very many movies worth the price theaters charge.
TemecuMike wrote on Jun 27, 2007 5:50 PM:Movie theaters will go the way of the drive-ins within 10 years. My three kids and I do "Movie Day"- usually twice in the summer (beginning and end) and over the holiday season. We arrive as early as allowed- and stay all day watching anywhere from 3-6 movies. We don't fight crowds at all, as we wait until a movie has been out awhile (ok- Lord of the Rings was an exception). We bring our own candy, and do the "free refill" popcorn and soda at Edwards. Going to the theater to watch one movie is a complete and utter waste- and is no longer allowed in my family. I don't lose a wink of sleep over this- and the theater lets me go in and out even though my ticket was for an earlier show. Great place to be during the 105 degree days! Three cheers for Movie Day!!!
john wrote on Jun 29, 2007 3:53 PM:I remember when my folks would drop me off at theater give me a buck I would see a movie , eat and have change , and the movies were better. Now to take my wife and 2 kids I have to budget money out of my check to afford to see them.If I sneak candy and water in I am teaching them to fraud an innkeeper , teaching them to steal , so I spend around 70 for tickets , soda and popcorn etc.. I think kid movies should have a cheaper cost , prices should be based on cost of movie etc... Hollywood is out of control.
Agree with Jeez! wrote on Jun 30, 2007 8:46 AM:I take my family to the movies to see the ones we can't wait to come out on DVD. We go to an early show because it is cheaper. We ALSO bring in our own candy, dried fruit, nuts..whatever. I do not feel like JOHN, that I am teaching my kids to steal or "fraud the innkeeper" by bringing in my own snacks. They do not provide the snacks that my family likes, so I bring my own.
John wrote on Jul 24, 2007 5:12 AM:The last time I had this so called MOVIE EXPERIENCE ,Some clown behind me had his cell phone on and was receiving calls, A joker with three kids was in front of me yakking about the Movie while it was happening .All just plain rude. I wont be doing that again. Wait a month and the DVD will be out .
