VISTA -- The Vista Unified School District recently announced that it will provide meals through Aug. 17 to all neighborhood children younger than 18 through the Seamless Summer Feeding Program.

Breakfast will be provided at 7:30 a.m. at the following sites: Bobier Elementary, 220 Bobier Drive; Crestview Elementary, 510 Sunset Drive; Foothill Oak Elementary, 1370 Foothill Drive; and Olive Elementary, 836 Olive Drive.

Lunch will be provided from noon to 12:30 p.m at the following sites: Brengle Terrace Park, 1200 Vale Terrace; Temple Heights Elementary, 1550 Temple Heights Drive: Bobier Elementary, 220 Bobier Drive; Crestview Elementary, 510 Sunset Drive; Foothill Oak Elementary; 1370 Foothill Drive; and Olive Elementary, 836 Olive Drive.

Program provides student stipends

NORTH COUNTY -- A one-of-a-kind program, the Youth Development Initiative, provided through the Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation, gives current or future MiraCosta students the opportunity to earn money while participating in mentoring and service learning.

The program is designed for 18- to 24-year-olds who show great potential for future personal and career success, but who have been unable to actualize their goals. It helps students achieve clarity regarding their future life direction, both personally and in their careers.

The initiative provides each participant with a $23,000 living allowance during the year they participate in the program. The payments are designed to allow participants to focus on the mentoring and service learning experience as their primary full-time priority.

The 10 applicants chosen will receive one hour per week of high-quality mentoring and counseling from licensed and experienced counselors, will enroll in a service learning course at MiraCosta College and work 32 hours per week in a human service, arts or educational nonprofit organization that matches their interests; and will participate in twice monthly peer learning activities.

Students interested in applying for the program must meet certain criteria, as outlined on the Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation Web site at http://www.picernefoundation.org. The deadline for applications, also available on the Web site, is June 29. The program begins on Aug. 21, the first day of the fall semester at MiraCosta College.

San Dieguito 70th anniversary planned

ENCINITAS -- San Dieguito High School's classes of 1937 to 1965 will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the school with activities planned from Sept. 13 through 16.

The four-day celebration will begin with a golf tournament on Sept. 13 to benefit the San Dieguito Memorial Scholarship Fund, followed by tours of the school and individual class mixers on Sept. 14. From 3 to 10 p.m. Sept. 15, all classes involved will be honored and reunions of the classes of 1937, 1941, 1947, 1952, 1957 and 1962 will be observed during a celebration at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. A brunch at San Dieguito Park will be held on Sept. 15.

Carlsbad resident is scholar, athlete

CARLSBAD -- Chase Ross, a Carlsbad High School volleyball outside hitter, is in the independent study program at Carlsbad Seaside Academy. His total grade point average is 4.1163, which includes 12 units completed at MiraCosta College.

TPHS student trains for Chemistry Olympiad

CARMEL VALLEY -- Henry Tung, a Torrey Pines High School senior, recently attended the U.S. National Chemistry Study Camp at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He was just one of 20 students chosen from throughout the country to compete for a spot on the U.S. Chemistry Olympiad team. Four of the 20 students who attended the camp will be selected for the U.S. team that will compete at the 39th annual International Chemistry Olympiad, to be held in July in Moscow. The son of Henti and Peisha Tung of Carmel Valley, Henry already has one gold medal from the 2006 International Physics Olympiad. He will attend Harvard University in the fall.

Encinitas veteran is college grad

ENCINITAS -- Dudley "Doug" Elmore recently graduated from the University of San Diego with a bachelor's degree in nursing after serving for the U.S. Army in Afghanistan, where he was awarded a Purple Heart.

While at USD, he continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve Nurse Corps. At USD, he was a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honors Society and was awarded the Manchester Family Nursing Scholarship. He is employed at the UCSD Medical Center's Thornton Hospital in the intensive care unit and plans to continue his education at USD and become a family nurse practitioner. He and his wife Kimberly Marcotte-Elmore have two children, Hilary and Austin.

Honors earned by local resident

Christopher M. Smith of Cardiff, a 12th-grader at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H., earned Honors for the past winter term. The son of Bradford Smith and Alice Crowe, he is in his second year at the independent preparatory school.

Hannalei student artwork displayed at fair

VISTA -- Artwork by students from the AM/PM Program at Hannalei Elementary School in Vista are on display through July 4 at the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar.

There are 49 entries from grade levels ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade. The students were guided in their artistic efforts by AM/PM assistant Paula Montagna. The art projects have been entered into the "Kids Best" category and are on display in the Del Mar Racetrack infield under the big white tent.

ECHS plans sale fundraiser

OCEANSIDE -- El Camino High School's Wildcat baseball program will hold a parking lot sale to raise money for a new batting cage and snack bar facility from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 30 in the parking lot of the campus, 400 Rancho del Oro Drive.

The event will feature a bake sale, balloons for children and other concessions. Donations of gently used household items, sporting goods, lawn and garden tools, books, magazines, furniture, CDs and DVDs, electronics, clothing and other items are welcome. VUSD hearing to address surplus space

VISTA -- The Vista Unified School District will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. June 25 and July 16 in the district board room, 1234 Arcadia Ave., regarding potential surplus space or real property within the district. The space is being evaluated by an advisory committee formed by the district.

Properties being reviewed are:

about .37 acres of land, including a residential structure, on Crestview Road adjacent to Crestview Elementary School in Vista;

about 9,000 feet of vacant land on Panorama Ridge in Oceanside;

about 20,000 square feet of vacant land on Darwin Drive near Ridgemont in Oceanside;

about 1.8 acres of land, including a residential structure, on Foothill Drive across from Rancho Minerva Middle School in Vista.

King scholarships announced

OCEANSIDE -- The following students were recent scholarship recipients of the city of Oceanside's 2007 Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships Program:

Ahvianna M. Armstead, Oceanside High, $1,500. Plans to major in political science with a minor in music, then go to law school. Has a 3.78 grade point average and plans to go to UC Irvine.

Ayesha A. Sabree, El Camino High $1,500. Was 2006-07 Youth of the Year at the Oceanside Boys & Girls Club. Plans to go to Palomar College to earn an associate in arts degree in criminal justice and serve as an FBI agent or private investigator.

Alonte D. Horn, MiraCosta Adult Learning Center, $2,000. Plans to earn a degree in business at MiraCosta College. Believes in giving back to his family and community by being all that he can be.

Timothy D. Rowe-Mitchell, El Camino High, $2,000. Has been in the MCJROTC for 3 1/2 years, plans to major in criminal justice and wants to be a Drug Enforcement Administration agent.

Michael N. Henderson, Rancho Buena Vista High, $2,000. Plans to attend West Los Angeles Community College and transfer to UCLA. Plans to major in business finance.

Winter Victoria Santana, Ocean Shores High, $2,000. Plans to go to MiraCosta College, then transfer to a four-year university to earn a psychology degree.

Narmi Playa-Sandoval, Ocean Shores High, $2,000. Plans to attend MiraCosta to earn a nursing certificate. Hasbeen involved in Associated Student Body and girl's soccer team at Ocean Shores.

Khrystyna Gozar Mandigma, Oceanside High, $3,500. Plans to pursue a nursing degree with a specialty in anesthetics. She volunteered at the Tri-City Medical Center and the Health Career Academy.

Lanae K. Harper, Guajome Park Academy, $3,500. Wants to study journalism and elementary education. She is the valedictorian of Guajome Park Academy

Joi Ashley Fletcher, Vista High, $3,500. Plans to attend Cal State Chico to pursue a degree in nursing. Has volunteered with the MiraCosta Summer Bridge Program. Has a GPA of 3.62.

Chun-Han "Hank" Lin, Guajome Park Academy, $3,500. Wants to earn a PhD in engineering. Has volunteered as a peer tutor since the seventh grade and has served on Associated Student Body as school treasurer.

Christian M. Parker, Oceanside High, $4,000. Plans to earn a bachelor's degree in math or fashion design. Has volunteered at the Libby Lake Community Center and with the Sun Program painting houses and has been a member of the basketball, track and cheerleading teams.

Brittney Juliet Allen, Rancho Buena Vista High, $4,000. Plans to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C. to study journalism. Has participated in the concert and marching bands and has been on the varsity track and field teams since her freshman year. Her 3.58 grade point average puts her in the top 25 percent of her graduating class.

Veronica N. Herrera, Oceanside High, $5,000. Wants to be an English teacher to teach kids how to speak up against social injustices. Has volunteered with the Lifeline tutor service, at the library and with the Advancement Via Individual Determination program.

Daniel DeRobles, El Camino High, $5,000. Plans to go to San Diego State University to major in psychology/pre-med. Wants to work with patients with mental disorders. Has volunteered with Women's Resource Center, Libby Elementary School, and the Advancement Via Individual Determination program. Has been on the varsity soccer team for two years and has a 3.71 grade point average.

Khalia Zara Baldwin, El Camino High, $5,000. Wants to study international relations with an emphasis in Middle Eastern affairs. Has been on the mayor's Youth Council and plays on field hockey teams. Has earned enough credits to graduate early with a 3.58 GPA.

Conway blood drive planned

ESCONDIDO -- Conway Elementary School will host a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 21 in honor of two Conway students who are battling a relapse of leukemia. For information about donating blood and to schedule an appointment, call (619) 528-6555. Walk-ins also are welcome.

Calvin Christian alumna joins honor group

Vanessa Marie Pfaff, a graduate of Calvin Christian High School in Escondido, recently was recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, a national leadership and honor organization at UC Los Angeles. Sigma Alpha Lambda is a national leadership and honors organization dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment.

Escondido residents make college lists

Two Escondido residents recently earned honors at their respective colleges.

Carlos A. Downey, an Escondido High School graduate, made the 2007 spring semester dean's honor roll at Eastern New Mexico University in Portalez, N.M. He earned the honor by maintaining at least a 3.25 grade point average and completing a minimum of 15 hours for the semester.

Carly White earned spots on the spring 2007 quarter president's and dean's honor lists at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, La. To be eligible for the president's honor list, students must earn at least a 3.8 grade point average with a minimum of nine semester hours with no grade lower than a B. To make the dean's honor list, students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average with no grade lower than a C.

Panel to discuss adolescence

ESCONDIDO -- A panel of home-schooling parents and educators will share the trials and tribulations of surviving their children's adolescence in a workshop to be held from 1 to 3 p.m. June 22 at Dehesa Charter School, 1441 Montiel Road, Suite 143. Bernardo Heights student honored

RANCHO BERNARDO -- Ninad Kulkarni, a student at Bernardo Heights Middle School, recently was honored at a statewide awards ceremony for gifted children held by The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth.

Ninad Kulkarni was invited to the ceremony based on his exceptional performance on a rigorous, above-grade-level test given to second- through eighth-grade talent search participants. Seventh- and eighth-graders took the SAT or ACT, the same tests used for college admissions. Second- through sixth-graders took the SCAT, an above-level test scaled for younger students.

The results of the tests give families a better idea of a child's academic talents in comparison to the thousands of other academically talented students who participate. Students also earn recognition at the awards ceremonies, and their test scores may qualify them for the center's summer programs and distance education courses.

Ramona High class of '57 reunion set

Ramona High's Class of 1957 will hold its 50th reunion buffet dinner at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Ramona Outdoor Community Center.
