Chargers agree to deal with TE

SAN DIEGO ---- The Chargers locked up another veteran player through the 2009 season on Friday, agreeing to terms with tight end Brandon Manumaleuna on a new three-year contract.
Manumaleuna's previous contract ran through 2008. He becomes the 28th veteran signed through 2009.
Last season was Manumaleuna's first with the Chargers. Coveted for his run blocking, Manumaleuna caught 14 passes for 91 yards and three touchdowns.
"He's not a major part of our passing offense but, absolutely, you must be aware of him," general manager A.J. Smith said. "He's done some damage already for us.
"But his main role, without a doubt, is that he's a blocking tight end and a major part of our run game."
Manumaleuna, 27, spent his first five NFL seasons with the St. Louis Rams. The Chargers acquired him for a fourth-round draft pick.
Smith confirmed that the Chargers have interest in Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver, who has applied for the July 12 NFL supplemental draft after recently becoming academically ineligible.
Oliver caught the attention of numerous teams after holding Georgia Tech star Calvin Johnson to two receptions for 13 yards last season. Johnson was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 draft by the Detroit Lions.
"He's a legitimate football player," Smith said. "I think he's the real deal, and we're studying him hard."

Now the Oliver thing is interesting. Drayton is history after this season, we all know this. Having another stud corner come in would be huge, especially if we can get him for what amounts to a third in next years draft. I say go for it!
