RIVERSIDE -- The working of a jet engine will be highlighted Saturday at March Field Air Museum.
Beginning at 11 a.m. and running hourly until 2 p.m., visitors will learn about the history of jet engines, what makes them fly and experience a few take-offs within the museum boundaries.
Programming includes demonstrations and youth tours, story under the wing of a plane, and a make-it-yourself rocket.
Admission is $7 for age 12 and older, and $5 for age 5 to 12.
The museum is at the Van Buren Avenue offramp of Interstate 215. For information, call 697-6605.
Rotary clubs create program
MURRIETA -- Rotary clubs from Riverside and San Bernardino counties have taken the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program for high school students and developed a program called PRYDE, which is designed to provide middle school students with the skills to navigate peer pressure, overcome adversity and tap into their talents.
The acronym stands for Personal Rotary Youth Development Experience, which addresses many of the issues that used to affect the high school age kids, but are now occurring in a younger age group.
Sponsored by Rotary Clubs from Murrieta, the Banning Pass area and Palm Springs, approximately 100 middle-schoolers were recently treated to a weekend at a mountain retreat in Idyllwild, where they were encouraged to take risks and come out of their shells.

Marine League to meet Saturday
MURRIETA -- Finances will be the topic when the Marine Corps League Murrieta-Temecula Detachment 1057 meets at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Ken Punjaba will talk about financial matters that could apply to club members.
The league is a veterans organization of the U.S. Marines and is composed of current and former Marines and Navy corpsmen with honorable service. All qualified Marines are encouraged to join. It meets the last Saturday of the month.
Don Krampe, founder of the post and former commandant, was recently honored by the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation for his volunteer services on behalf of veterans.
The award dates back to 1943, when the USAT Dorchester was torpedoed by a German submarine and the chaplains aboard the ship gave up their life jackets to troops.

Pancake breakfast to raise funds
QUAIL VALLEY -- The Quail Valley Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday.
The breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, juice, milk and coffee. The cost is $4 for adults and $2 for children 12 and younger.
The money will go to the volunteer station, which covers Quail Valley and portions of Canyon Lake and Menifee.

Newcomers Club meets Monday
TEMECULA -- The Temecula Valley Newcomers Club will have a free coffee social for new and prospective members at 11 a.m. Monday.
The club offers activities such as bridge, mahjong, book club, dominoes and day trips.

'Old Salts' to meet
SUN CITY -- The "Old Salts" chapter of the Merchant Marine Veterans of World War II will meet at noon July 5 at Boston Billie's restaurant.
All Merchant Marine veterans and their spouses are invited to attend the luncheon and business meeting.

GOP group host speakers
TEMECULA -- Rees Lloyd and Nathan Fletcher will speak when the Murrieta-Temecula Republican Assembly meets at 6 p.m. July 6 at Pat & Oscar's.
Lloyd, a vice commander with the American Legion, will talk about "Fighting the ACLU -- the Taliban of American Liberal Secularism." Lloyd wrote the American Legion resolution that led to the Public Expression of Religion Act, which is pending before Congress. These laws would end judges' authority to award attorney fees in cases brought to remove or destroy religious symbols. He is also a co-author of a resolution announcing the Veterans Memorial Project.
Fletcher, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, will share "Stories from the Front Line: Iraq, Africa and the Global War on Terror."
Fletcher served as a counter-intelligence and human intelligence specialist in Iraq's Sunni Triangle and the Horn of Africa. He is also a Republican candidate from the 75th Assembly District in San Diego.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m. and the dinner program starts at 6:30. The cost is $15 for members, $20 for others and $10 for students younger than 25.

Book discussion group to gather
TEMECULA -- The Temecula Library Book Discussion Group will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. July 9 at Temecula Public Library.
The book to be discussed is "Founding Mothers" by Cokie Roberts. Ellen Haro will be the hostess for the meeting.
Upcoming discussions will be on Amy Tan's writings Aug. 13, "I am Charlotte Simmons" on Sept. 10, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" on Oct. 8 and "The Alchemist" on Dec. 10.
The group, which meets the second Monday of the month, is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Temecula Valley chapter of the American Association of University Women.

Temecula Valley Pageant is Sunday
MURRIETA -- The 16th annual Temecula Valley Pageant will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday at Mulligan's Family Fun Center.
The event is open to all ages. The 16 divisions range from babies to senior citizens. It is open to boys up age 13 and women of all ages. There is also a plus-size division. Winners advance to state competition.

Boat parade registration
LAKE ELSINORE -- Registration for Lake Elsinore's annual patriotic boat parade of lights is open until Monday.
The parade will begin at 8 p.m. July 4 and culminate with a fireworks display.
At least 50 percent of a vessel must be covered with lights to participate. The parade is limited to 30 boats. The entry fee is $5.
Awards will be given at the July 10 City Council meeting.

Church to host former baseball star
TEMECULA -- Former Major League baseball player Albie Pearson will speak at the annual Men's Grill Out at 4 p.m. July 8 at Hope Lutheran Church. The event is open to men and boys ages 9 and older.
Pearson, a Southern California native, was the American League Rookie of the Year in 1958 as a member of the Washington Senators. He later played with the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Angels.
Tickets are $10 and must be purchased by Sunday. Proceeds support Pearson's work with at-risk youth.

Local teen honored by Kohl's
TEMECULA -- Temecula Valley High graduate Steven Ewing was among 1,400 youths nationwide for helping transform their communities through volunteerism in the seventh annual Kohl's Kids Who Care scholarship program.
Ewing, 18, is one of 122 youths from California who will receive $50 gift cards and certificates of recognition. The winners also qualify to receive a portion of more than $200,000 in scholarships Kohl's will award this summer.
Ewing was honored for organizing a drive to collect thousands of pairs of socks for troops overseas.
Store-level winners will compete for 170 regional scholarships worth $1,000 each. Regional winners will then compete for 10 national scholarships worth $5,000 each. In addition, Kohl's will contribute $1,000 to each national winner's nonprofit organization of choice.
Regional and national winners will be announced this month and next, respectively.
Members sought for Menifee panel
MENIFEE -- Riverside County 3rd District Supervisor Jeff Stone is seeking residents to serve on the Menifee Valley Municipal Advisory Council.
Advisory council members make recommendations to the supervisor on community issues such as public health, safety, welfare, public works and planning.
The five-member board meets monthly. Members are appointed and serve four-year terms.

So a Navy Corpsman can attend if he can prove honorable service-how condesending! It is time that the marines got there own medical people and stop relying on the Navy for everything.
