Summer reading program under way

"No more school, no more books, no more teacher's dirty looks."
While some students may be chanting that old ditty as they settle into days of leisure during summer vacation, those who wish to eschew the "no more books" part can join the free summer reading program under way at area libraries.
Themed "Get a Clue at Your Library," children age 3 to teens will be rewarded for reading books during the summer months.
"Studies show that children who read through the summer do much better on their tests, they improve their reading skills," Mission Trail Library Branch manager Jennie Jackson said. "The purpose of the program is to get children to read over the summer."
Jackson expects up to 500 participants at her branch to be involved in the program, which is designed to encourage children to find things out about the library.
Besides the weekly prizes, which range from book marks and stickers to pencils and books, many of the branches also host special events.
Programs are held each Tuesday at the two Temecula libraries. Performances are at 10:30 a.m. at the new Temecula Public Library and 1 p.m. at Grace Mellman Library. Next Tuesday will feature a magic and comedy show.
Other county libraries are Canyon Lake, Lake Elsinore, Paloma Valley and Sun City.
The city-run library in Murrieta is also participating, offering separate reading programs for younger students and teens.
The summer reading program, which started at most libraries June 18, runs for six weeks.
