September 25, 1946 - June 23, 2007

Kenneth Oliver Smith, Jr. passed away Sunday, June 23, 2007, at home surrounded by his wife, children and sister. Ken was born September 25, 1946, in York, Pennsylvania to Kenneth and Jean Smith. He lived and worked on his family farm until moving to Oceanside, where he became mesmerized with the Pacific Ocean.

Ken joined the Army in 1967 and served two tours in Vietnam with the 1st Infantry Division known as the "Big Red One." He was immensly proud of his service to his country; however, he hated war and unfortunately suffered its lasting effects.

Ken is survived by his wife of 38 years, Britta Gaare Smith, of Oceanside; daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Martin Renner, and their two children, Zachary and Amber, of Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Jennifer Smith, and their son, Nathan, of Carlsbad; parents, Kenneth and Jean Smith; sister, Cathy Smith Distefano, all of Sun City; mother-in-law, Marjorie DiMatteo, of Willits, CA; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and fishing friends. Ken will be missed but surely not forgotten.

Private scattering of Ken's ashes will be at his favorite fishing spot and an Honor Memorial Service at Fort Rosecrans is pending.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Ken's name be sent to Odyssey Hospice, 9444 Balboa Ave., Suite 290, San Diego, CA 92154.
