Jake Tokheim, 13, a Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 787, is working on completing his Eagle Scout service project. He has arranged to complete his project by managing donation drives in North County to benefit the YWCA and Becky's House, a residential program for survivors of domestic violence and their children.

Tokheim is collecting women's professional business clothes and shoes to help these women on job interviews and give them an opportunity to feel confident and look professional. Needed are women's business clothes and shoes, including plus sizes, in good condition with no tears or stains. For more information, call (760) 586-1376.     Fashion show to benefit library fund

    Vacation Bible School planned

    FALLBROOK -- Fallbrook Community Baptist Church will sponsor a vacation Bible school for children age 4 through sixth grade from 9 a.m. to noon July 16 through 20 at the church at 731 S, Stage Coach Lane. The theme is "Adventure of the Treasure Seekers," and will feature Bible-based activities.

    Boys & Girls Club pool now open

    FALLBROOK -- The swimming pool at the Boys & Girls Clubs of North County is now open for the summer. Open swim is available from 1 to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Cost is $2 for nonmembers and $1 for members with a current membership card.

    Swim lessons also are being offered. Cost is $40 per child per two-week session. Times are: 8, 9 and 10 a.m. for children 4 and older. The 11 a.m. session is for parents and their children 3 and younger. Sessions are:

    Women's support group meets

    BONSALL -- A.S.A.P. (Always Say A Prayer) is Riverview Evangelical Free Church's support group for women with chemically dependent family members.     Fallbrook Library summer reading program continues

    FALLBROOK -- Super sleuths and daring detectives are invited to join "Get a Clue @ Your Library" at the Fallbrook branch of the San Diego County Library. The 2007 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, babies through teenagers (YNK @ Your Library) and Adults (Summer Sleuthing @ Your Library).

    Health screening set for July 12

    Take the challenge to lose weight

    ESCONDIDO -- The Palomar Family YMCA will offer a six-week weight-loss team challenge from July 16 through Aug. 24.     VC History Museum re-elects officers

    VALLEY CENTER -- Officers of the Valley Center History Museum, led by President William Hutchings, were all re-elected at the organization's annual meeting June 27.

    Along with Hutchings, returning to office are Vice President Sarah Clayton, Treasurer Nicky Lovejoy and Secretary Joyce Johnson. The officers head a 12-member board that governs the history museum and the Valley Center Historical Society.

    City to provide beach trash bags

    ENCINITAS -- The Encinitas Parks and Recreation Department will provide free trash and recycling bags for beach goers on July 4, with several posted bag station locations at access points and lifeguard towers at Stone Steps, Moonlight Beach, Beacons and Grandview. Each station will have both black bags for trash and blue bags for recyclables. Patrons are encouraged to use bags to collect holiday trash and recyclables to help keep the sand and surf as clean as possible. Once bags are filled they can be returned to posted bag stations or placed by a trash can for collection by the city.

    Fourth of July party set at the park

    Library to offer 'DNA Decoded' program for youths

    RANCHO PENASQUITOS -- The Rancho Penasquitos Library, 13330 Salmon River Road, will host a free "DNA Decoded" science program through the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center at 3:30 p.m. July 9.

    The program is part of the library's 2007 Summer Reading Program, "Get a Clue @ Your Library," and is geared toward students in grades six through eight. Participants can learn how DNA makes people unique and how it can be used to solve crimes. They will perform a simple DNA extraction and keep a sample to take home.

    Healthy cooking classes offered

    POWAY -- Donna Wolf, a registered dietitian and gourmet cook, teaches simple, healthy cooking classes for all ages and skill levels. Participants can learn how to create meals without the excesses of sugar, salt and fat and utilizing healthy ingredients and fresh herbs and spices. Organic ingredients also are used.

    Assemblage art workshops set

    POWAY -- Free tours of the Kumeyaay Ipai Interpretive Center at Pauwai are offered from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays.

    Visitors can view an American Indian village site and learn about North County's earliest residents. Docent-led tours begin with discussions of native plants, foods and artifacts and end with a hike to the grinding holes and midden areas. Walking shoes are recommended.

    'Water Works' Bible program set

    SAN MARCOS -- Meadowlark Community Church will hold a "Water Works" vacation Bible program for children in first through fifth grades. The camp will include crafts, games, music, drama and snacks. Participants should be ready to get wet as some of the games involve water.

    Preschool program has openings

    SAN MARCOS -- Spaces are available for the summer session of the Raggedy Ann & Andy Preschoolers Program sponsored by San Marcos Community Services.

    The program, for children ages 3 to 5, focuses on socialization skills with an introduction to academic concepts. Children learn social skills while participating in arts and crafts, storytelling and outdoor play. Fall, holiday, winter, spring and summer sessions are available.

    Fourth of July parade set

    JULIAN -- Julian's heritage will be celebrated at the annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Parade on July 4. This year's parade will honor members of the town's pioneer families. Woody Barnes, a rancher and longtime owner of Manzanita Ranch in Wynola, will be the Grand Marshal.

    The parade will step off at noon from Julian High School, 1656 Highway 78. Pre-parade activities will begin at 10 a.m. and include a vintage aircraft flyover, a patriotic program and ice cream for kids.

    Continuing Education Center holds meeting

    RANCHO BERNARDO -- The Continuing Education Center at Rancho Bernardo held its annual meeting June 19 at the Rancho Bernardo Library.

    City Attorney Mike Aguirre was the guest speaker. During his presentation, Aguirre proposed five changes to the San Diego City Charter and recommended a neighborhood bill of rights giving planning boards control over development and budgets for their communities. Other proposals made were the election of the city auditor, mandatory recycling, public votes for city debt such as pensions and subpoena power for the city attorney.

    In addition, several CEC officers and directors were elected at the meeting. They are Donna Keaton, first vice president; Jim Reading, treasurer; and David Blitzblau, Margaret Drohan and Mary Alice Felt, directors. Continuing their terms into 2008 are Cal Watson, president; Phyllis Healy, academic vice president; Marian Hamburg, secretary; and Charlene Barber, Don Gragg and Beverly McNamee, directors. Retiring First Vice President Bee St. Clair received a plaque of appreciation for her contributions to the organization.

    Concert in the park set for July 12

    OCEANSIDE -- The Oceanside Parks & Recreation/Neighborhood Services & Arts Commission will present a concert in the park at 5:30 p.m. July 12 at Rancho del Oro Park, corner of Mesa Drive and College Boulevard. Entertainment will include the Nanahuatzin Folklorica Dance Company and the Taiko Shokenji Ensemble, followed by Ruby and the Red Hots performing blues music.     Parking fines increased in Oceanside

    OCEANSIDE -- Effective July 1, most parking violation fines have increased to $50 per violation. The city provides street sweeping service to residential neighborhoods twice a month. At the entrances to residential streets, signs are posted indicating the street sweeping hours. If a vehicle is parked on the street during the restricted period and is passed by the street sweeper, the vehicle will be issued a $50 parking violation citation.

    In the downtown area, there are several different parking limitations to encourage turnover, prohibit overnight parking and allow for street sweeping. Along the beach there are signs with instructions on using pay lots, free lots and metered spaces as well as signs with limited parking hours. For parking regulation information, call (760) 435-5195.     Seniors to travel to Pechanga

    OCEANSIDE -- The Oceanside Senior Center is planning a trip to the Pechanga Indian Casino on Aug. 14. Cost is $14 per person, which includes round-trip transportation and $5 in slot play.     Fundraiser supports winter shelter

    VISTA -- Operation Hope will sponsor a summer benefit fundraiser at 8 p.m. July 17 at the Moonlight Amphitheatre, 1200 Vale Terrace Drive. Proceeds from a special preview night of musical comedy, "Me and My Girl," will help support Operation Hope's temporary winter shelter for homeless families in Vista.     Mission to hold weekend retreat

    OCEANSIDE -- Mission San Luis Rey will host a weekend retreat, "Francis and Clare: Spiritual Renewal From Their Time to Ours," July 13 to 15 at the mission retreat center, 4050 Mission Ave. The retreat will include discussion on the insights of Saint Francis and Saint Clare that speak directly to the modern heart with many of the same hopes, fears and expectations as people seek to reclaim Christianity and interpret it to a world often fractured by cynicism or materialism.

    OCEANSIDE -- Tri City Hospice Heart To Heart Bereavement Program will offer a six-week Creative Journal workshop for adults experiencing grief and loss.     Learn to identify birds

    OCEANSIDE -- Bird enthusiasts of all skill levels are invited to spend a morning with the birds at Buena Vista Audubon Nature Center with leader Tom Troy, who will help identify birds by sight and sound with added instruction in the use of binoculars and scopes.
