The Civil War returns to Vista on Saturday

VISTA ---- Back in the 1860s, Union and Confederate troops had to make do with lumpy bedrolls, worm-infested biscuits, long marches and itchy wool uniforms while dodging deadly musket and cannonballs. Today's Civil War re-enactors have it a lot easier ---- they arrive at the battle grounds by car, there's no threat of any real ammunition being fired their way, and they can grab a fresh-grilled hot dog on their lunch break.

Still, the battles taking place next weekend at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum's sixth annual Civil War Re-enactment will seem just as real to spectators.
The annual event, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and July 15, will feature tours of the soldiers' camps (both North and South) beginning at 10 a.m., battles on Saturday at noon and 3 p.m. (11:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. July 15); artillery demonstrations at 12:45 and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and two performances of "The Gettysburg Address," given by an Abraham Lincoln impersonator, at 12:30 and 2:45 p.m. July 15.
Both days the event will offer food and drink on-site, vendors and demonstrations.
Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62 and over; $5 for children 5 to 11; and free for active military and children 4 and under. Parking is $2. The museum is located at 2040 N. Santa Fe Ave. in Vista. For information, call (760) 941-1791.
