Charlie Hustle's site takes head-first dive

www.peterose.com -- Remember when baseball's All-Star game was something people actually wanted to watch?
The best part of this year's game might be the commercial with players riding through host city San Francisco on cable cars.
But there was a time when players seemed to care if they won or lost this exhibition. Think Pete Rose thought the game didn't count when he collided with Ray Fosse to give the National League a win in the 1970 All-Star game?
With another "Midseason Classic" upon us, it seems like a perfect time to check up on Rose, who was an All-Star regular with 17 appearances. Just don't expect www.peterose.com to show up on any All-Star lists.
Cool stuff
- Umm, the site looks spiffy. That's about the only thing it has going for it.
Check at the door
- Even the most ardent Rose fan will find the online store nauseating. You can actually purchase an autographed baseball with the inscription "I'm sorry I bet on baseball." The good news is you can get a T-shirt or sweat shirt with the same inscription. About the only thing missing is an "I kissed and made up with Jim Gray" beanie.
- The news and blog sections might as well be eliminated. In defense of the site, it's not like there's any Rose news to report these days.
- It's not a surprise that his bio doesn't mention gambling or his banishment from baseball. But given that he isn't shy about hawking "I'm sorry I bet on baseball" paraphernalia, maybe an update of the bio is in order.
The grade
Rose may hold a dozen all-time major-league records, but best Web site is not among them. Unless you are looking for a gift for a Rose fan ---- and nothing says "I love you" like an autographed photo of Rose arguing with an umpire ---- skip this site. It gets one mouse.
