North San Diego County School News Briefs: King scholarships announced

OCEANSIDE -- The following students were recent scholarship recipients of the city of Oceanside's 2007 Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships Program:

Flora Vista students raise money for wheelchairs
ENCINITAS -- Sixth-graders at Flora Vista Elementary School recently put on a play.
Throughout practices and performances, they encouraged other students and community members to donate funds to the charity that the sixth-graders had chosen: Free Wheelchair Mission of Santa Ana, which makes and sends simple wheelchairs made of a resin patio chair and two bike tires. Each wheelchair costs $44.40 to make, and is sent to needy people in Third World countries.
The students' goal was to raise $500 to buy 10 wheelchairs. They raised more than $5,000 to purchase 100 wheelchairs. The founder of the organization visited Flora Vista for a small reception and to receive the donation from the sixth-graders.
Carlsbad resident earns scholarship
Diana Lorenz of Carlsbad recently received a five-year, $12,500 Dean's Scholarship from Newman University. She will transfer from Santa Barbara College to Newman this fall. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must have at least a 3.3 grade point average and a score of 23 on the ACT exam or 1,600 on the SAT 1.
Mission Estancia Girl Scouts help sick kids
OCEANSIDE -- Recently, members of Girl Scout Troop 1611 from Mission Estancia Elementary School collected more than eight large garbage bags of toys to donate to children at Rady Children's Hospital San Diego.
The girls took on the community service project as a way of saying thank you to the hospital for treating a fellow troop member who was hospitalized with a brain infection and needed surgery. The troop collected toy donations at their school, and held performances and a father-daughter dance, where they took contributions. The girl who had been sick held an online sale of jewelry she made during her recovery, raising $8,000 to fund a home movie theater for the hospital playroom.
Pacific Rim principal honored
CARLSBAD -- Students, PTA members and parents at Pacific Rim Elementary School recently presented Principal Steve Ahle with a custom surfboard, golf bag and certificate for new golf clubs as a thank you for his leadership for the past eight years. Ahle is leaving Pacific Rim and will be principal of Carlsbad's newest elementary school, Poinsettia Elementary, due to open for the 2007-08 school year.
Area residents make dean's list
NORTH COUNTY -- Two area residents recently earned spots on the dean's lists at their respective schools. Alina Gauntlett Shaw of Encinitas was named to the dean's list at Scripps College in Claremont. She recently graduated with a major in Hispanic studies and Latin American studies. Rachel Krause, a graduate of Carlsbad High School, made the dean's list at Grove City College in Grove City, Pa. A mathematics major, she is the daughter of Charles and Karen Krause of Carlsbad.
Local students earn prestigious award
NORTH COUNTY -- Michael R. Moll from Montecito High School in Ramona and Ashley M. Scott from San Pasqual Academy in Escondido recently were awarded the prestigious Horatio Alger Association's California State Scholarship to assist in funding for their college educations.
Michael and Ashley are two of 100 scholarship recipients in California who have demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity and hardships in their lives, while also demonstrating strength of character, strong academics, commitment to pursue a college education and desire to contribute to society.
The program is one of the largest need-based financial aid programs in the country and this year, awarded more than 1,200 state scholarships to students, ranging from $2,500 to $10,500 each.
Poway resident is college grad
Christian Dato recently graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, Penn. with a bachelor's degree in history/government and law, a double major.
Area residents earn college honors
A number of local residents earned a spot on the winter quarter dean's honors list at UC Santa Barbara. To be placed on the list, students must attain a grade point average of at least 3.75 carrying 12 or more units in the College of Arts and Letters, or 3.50 in the College of Engineering.
Escondido honorees include psychology/philosophy major Christina Anderson, financial mathematics and statistics major Michael Carlson, English major Christopher Clemons, pre-political science major Jasmine Lefever, psychology major Talea Miles, undeclared letters and science program major Caitlin Moyer, pre-communication major Hannah Perry, psychology major Andi Reed, financial mathematics and statistics/economics-mathematics major Ian Roberts, pre-biology major Steven Shedd, global studies-English major Megan Slocum and pre-political science major Anthony Tartanto.
Poway honorees include pre-political science major Andrew Botte Bates, pre-biology major Michael Beccarelli, undeclared letters and science program major Keisha Berglund, English/black studies major Briana Brickley, global studies major Whitney Broeking, English major Dawn Burley, English major Lisa Gary, history/religious studies major Megan Pucket, pre-psychology major Robin Ribnik and communication/business economics major Miriam Shoval.
Ramona resident Julia Ausin, an art history/art major made the list, as did Vista resident and pre-communication major Nicole Gaskari.
San Marcos honorees include pre-psychology major Corey Price and business economics/Spanish major Jessica Villalobos.
Valley Center honorees included communication major Alicia Harrison, mechanical engineering major Coleman Murray and pre-communication major Carolyn Wheatley.
