Community News briefs: SoCal Quilters' Run begins today

The ninth annual Southern California Quilters' Run will be held today through July 14 and from July 19 through 22.
Thirty-four quilting shops throughout Southern California will participate in the event. Quilters are invited to join in the caravan for a chance to win prizes. Stores will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays during the run.
Participating shops in North County include Sowing Sisters in Carlsbad, Quilter's Paradise in Escondido, Amidon Quiltworks in Poway, Quilter's Cottage in Fallbrook and Quilt in a Day in San Marcos.

Rock 105.3 blood drive set
SAN MARCOS -- Rock 105.3 and the San Diego Blood Bank will present the Rock 105.3 Friday the 13th Blood Drive from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 13 at Biggs Harley-Davidson/Buell, 717 Center Drive.
The first 105 successful donors will be awarded a ticket to see Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance in concert July 31 at Coors Amphitheater. In addition, all donors will receive a commemorative Rock 105.3 T-shirt (while supplies last), a sandwich from Gaglione Brothers Famous Steaks and Subs and other "Rock" giveaways.
Concert tickets and T-shirts will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Appointments are not available for this drive.

SD Track Club to host races
NORTH COUNTY -- The San Diego Track Club, a nonprofit running organization that awards scholarships to high schools students and track athletes, will host the following races.
-- Fourth annual "Bake at the Lake 4-Mile XC Race," 7:30 a.m. July 14, Lake Hodges Reservoir, Escondido. Cost is $15; $10 for SDTC members.
-- "Wild Duck 5K XC Race" (first race in Dirt Dog Series), 8:30 a.m. Aug. 18, Guajome Park, Vista. Cost is $20; $15 for SDTC members ($5 late fee if registered after Aug. 11).

Youth Symphony Concert set
ESCONDIDO -- Forty-five talented high school and university musicians from San Diego and 10 countries will perform at the third annual International Youth Symphony Concert at 4 p.m. July 15 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, 340 N. Escondido Blvd. The repertoire will include Beethoven's Symphony No. 8, Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" and Bartok's "Rumanian Fold Dances."
The young musicians were brought together through a unique collaboration between the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory and Rotary International's San Diego District 5340. The concert is a culmination of an intensive, three-week musical training program.

Classical music concert on tap
SAN MARCOS -- North County Sunday Soiree will present a classical music concert featuring Walter Ritter, Tracey Bondi-Pear, Jef Olsen, Therese Holladay and Thelma Johannsen, accompanied by pianist John Danke, from 7 to 8 p.m. July 15 at Meadowlark Church, at 1918 Redwing St.
Following the concert, local singers and musicians will perform in an open mike format.

World Affairs group to host speakers

On July 26, Professor Marjorie Cohn, president of the National Lawyers Guild and instructor at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, will discuss her book "Cowboy Republic: Six Ways the Bush Gang Has Defied The Law." A book signing will follow.

Swap meet event to benefit animals
SAN DIEGO -- The nonprofit San Diego Animal Support Foundation will host its first Collectables, Reusables And Pleasantries (CRAP) for Critters event from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 21 at the San Diego Sports Arena.
Clean out the house, garage and storage unit and bring donations to the swap meet between 6 and 8 that morning. No clothing or shoes will be accepted.
Proceeds will be used to help animal rescue groups and other animal welfare organizations throughout the county.

Sprint Nextel to sponsor MS Challenge Walk
CARLSBAD -- The National Multiple Sclerosis Society's Carlsbad-based Pacific South Coast Chapter has announced that Sprint Nextel Corp. will be title sponsor for the 2007 Sprint MS Challenge Walk, a three-day, 50-mile fundraising walk to be held Sept. 7 through 9. The walk will begin in Carlsbad and end in downtown San Diego.
After walking about 20 miles each of the first two days, walkers will stay overnight in hotels and enjoy nightly dinner and entertainment. Rest stops will be available approximately every three miles.
The minimum fundraising amount required to walk in the 2007 Sprint MS Challenge is $2,500 per person.

Foodmobile program expands
SAN DIEGO -- Jewish Family Service of San Diego has expanded its Foodmobile Program. A second "light" meal will be offered in addition to the hot kosher meal delivered daily by volunteers. The kosher "light" meal will consist of a sandwich, fruit or salad (potato, pasta, etc.) and juice. This added service will benefit the many Foodmobile clients who are unable to leave home to shop for food or prepare meals.
JFS's Foodmobile has been delivering kosher meals to homebound older adults since 1971 and younger homebound adults since 1998. The program serves most areas in San Diego County on Mondays through Fridays, with frozen meals available for the weekends.
