SAN DIEGO - Authorities asked the public today for help in finding a man suspected of beating and sexually assaulting a woman he followed home from a Palm City convenience store.

Martin De La Torre Jr., 26, allegedly tried to strike up a conversation with the 42-year-old woman at a 7-Eleven down the street from her Palm Avenue residence last Wednesday evening, according to San Diego police.

The woman ignored the man and left the area. After arriving home about 9:45 p.m., she heard unusual noises outside, opened her door and allegedly came face to face with De La Torre.

He allegedly forced his way into her residence, punched her in the face several times and pulled up her dress, police said.

The assailant ran off moments later, when a neighbor heard the disturbance and came to the victim's home. The woman suffered bruises and lost a tooth in the assault, SDPD Sgt. Rich Nemetz said.

De La Torre is described a 5-foot-8-inch, roughly 165-pound Latino with brown eyes and closely cropped black hair. He may be driving a black 2003 Jaguar.

Authorities urged anyone with information on the suspect's whereabouts to call SDPD communications at (619) 531-2000.
