WILDOMAR ---- A benefit car wash for Daniel Alonso, an Elsinore High student who has been diagnosed with liver cancer, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The car wash will be at the Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge, 33700 Mission Trail. For information, call 609-6437.

Funds available to community groups

TEMECULA ---- Applications for the city of Temecula's Community Service Funding Program are available.

Applications will be accepted from community-based, nonprofit organizations and evaluated for funding based on program criteria. Grants funds and other forms of financial assistance may also be available to organizations that serve the needs and improve the well-being of the residents of Temecula.

Organizations can get applications at City Hall, 43200 Business Park Drive, or online at www.cityoftemecula.org. Applications are due by Sept. 17 and applicants will be notified in November.

Keyways festival this weekend

TEMECULA ---- More than 25 female artisans and exhibitors will help Keyways Vineyard & Winery celebrate the launch of a new line of wines for women at The Femina Vita from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.Saturday and Sunday.

Along with food and wine, the two-day festival will include raffles, music, and exhibitions of female artwork and accomplishment.

Participants will showcase jewelry, hand-painted plates, health advice, cosmetics, lingerie, framed art and adoptable dogs.

Rufus, Harp to perform

TEMECULA ---- Rufus, the 1970s funk-pop-R&B band known for launching the career of Chaka Khan, and smooth jazz saxophonist Everette Harp will perform Saturday at Wilson Creek Winery's Sunset Jazz in the Vines concert.

Doors open at 6 p.m. The concert starts at 7.

Sunset in the Vines continues through the summer with Norman Brown's Summer Storm with Peabo Bryson, Marion Meadows and Jeff Lorber, with Shilts on Aug. 18, and Warren Hill and Bobby Lyle on Sept. 15.

Sports arena group to meet

MURRIETA ---- The Inland Valley Sports and Arena Commission will hold a public forum regarding the status and progress of its multipurpose arena project from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday.

The group would like to build four rinks on 100,000 square feet of space at Los Alamos Hills Sports Park, two for roller activities and two indoor ice rinks.

Spots available in museum program

TEMECULA ---- Children 8 to 10 can develop an understanding of local, natural and social history through the Temecula Valley Museum's Summer Explorer program.

The museum offers summer camp from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday. Each week, students will explore a different time period and a variety of topics. Students will handle museum artifacts, meet historians, geologists and anthropologists, make take-home crafts, participate in group activities, period games and historical field trips.

- July 30 to Aug. 3 ---- "Exploring Pioneer Life"

Tuition for each weekly session is $65. Students must provide their own snacks, lunches and bottled water.

Quarry topic of meeting

TEMECULA ----- An informational meeting on the Liberty Quarry is planned for at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Temeku Hills Country Club.

Granite Construction Inc. plans to build a 155-acre quarry east of the Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 15.

Representatives of both sides have been invited to speak and answer questions, including Matt Rahn, director at the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve, and Gary Johnson, from Granite Construction.

Hospice volunteers training set

SUN CITY ---- Hospice of the Valleys will conduct two introductory classes for those thinking of becoming a volunteer. Classes will be 9 to 11:30 a.m. July 31 or 6 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 1.

Hospice volunteers provide emotional support and practical assistance to people facing life-limiting illness.

Captains' meeting set for Komen race

MURRIETA ---- The Team Captain Kickoff for the annual Inland Empire Komen Race for the Cure will be at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 2 at Rancho Springs Medical Center. All team captains and those interested in having a team in the Oct. 21 race are asked to attend .

Team captains will learn about the race, how to register online, and other information such as deadlines. A team consists of 10 or more people who would walk, run, or even Sleep-In for the Cure.

Last year 10,544 people participated in the race. The largest team was from Pechanga Resort & Casino, with 372 members. The Riverside County Sheriff Department/Economic Development Council team raised the most in pledge donations with $29,717. Total cash and in-kind donations raised last year was approximately $1.5 million, which benefits breast cancer research.

This year's goal is for 12,000 runners, walkers and sleepers.

Bone marrow drive under way

MURRIETA ---- In recognition of an 11-year-old leukemia patient's campaign to register 5,000 bone marrow donors nationwide, Valley Blood Services is offering free bone marrow testing through the end of the month.

The drive was started by Patrick Pedraja of Tampa, Fla. Those who join the National Marrow Donor program are encouraged to give his name when they are tested to count toward the 5,000.

Donors must be between the ages of 18 and 60, have no history of asthma, cancer, diabetes neck or back problems, heart or circulatory disease and be within 20 percent of the ideal weight for their height and age.

Veteran counseling service offered

MURRIETA ---- Veterans Affairs Counseling Service is offered twice a month at Murrieta Senior Center. The next session will be Wednesday.

Don Krampe, a veteran and past assistant to the Veterans Administration regional director, will be at the center from 8 a.m. to noon the second and fourth Wednesday of the month.

County offers cool centers

Cool centers have been established at six Southwest County locations to help seniors beat the heat.

The cool centers offer an air-conditioned place to hang out on hot days, as well as water, snacks and activities.

The Riverside County Department of Public Health has opened 32 cool centers across the county.
