Man tells police woman died inside Murrieta home

MURRIETA -- A man accused of killing his girlfriend has confirmed what police already believed -- that she died inside her Murrieta home.

However Melvin Louis Shaw, 41, has not confessed to killing Elisa Marie Lopez, Murrieta police Detective Sgt. Jim Ganley said.

Shaw did admit to getting into the argument with Lopez the night police believe she was killed.

He told detectives that he and Lopez had an argument Friday night "because he came home intoxicated," Ganley said.

Police believe the argument then escalated into a physical confrontation which resulted in her death.

Shaw is scheduled to be arraigned today at Southwest Justice Center in French Valley.

A memorial service for Lopez is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. tonight at United Methodist Church at 24652 Adams Ave. with her funeral and burial taking place in Texas.

Anyone wishing to donate to the Elisa Lopez Benevolent Account, set up by friends to help her family in Texas, may do so at any Washington Mutual branch in California, bank officials said.

The body of the 41-year-old woman was found just after midnight Saturday next to a trash bin behind LA Fitness on Winchester Road in Temecula. Her body had been partially burned in a fire police say Shaw started to hide his crime.

"Based on evidence we found and statements he has made, we believe he killed her at the house and then tried to dispose of her body," Ganley said Tuesday.

"He made admissions to cleaning up the scene" in the house on Masters Road, the sergeant said.

Preliminary testing of evidence show signs of what detectives believe was blood in both Lopez's home and in the rear of her Lexus sport utility vehicle, Ganley said. Samples collected by forensic technicians will now be compared to Lopez's blood samples, he added.

Police believe Shaw used the Lexus to take her body to the trash bin where he reportedly left her and set the fire.

A Riverside County coroner's autopsy conducted Monday revealed that Lopez was dead before the fire was set, Ganley said. The autopsy did not show any signs of blunt force trauma to the victim's head or torso, the sergeant said.

Shaw and Lopez had been dating for about four months and he moved into her home about three weeks ago after she split with a longtime boyfriend, police have said.

About 11 hours after Lopez's body had been found in Temecula, police in Murrieta received a call from Shaw to report her as missing.

A Murrieta officer who went to the Masters Road home to take a report from Shaw became suspicious after noticing things like missing bedding and recently cleaned floors, police said.

Shaw was later arrested and booked at Southwest Detention Center in French Valley where he is being held without the possibility of bail, according to jail records.

concerned wrote on Jul 27, 2007 4:44 PM:Yes he is, he is a good guy to my knowledge and I find it very had to believe he could kill anyone. He was a southern gentleman who would never hit a woman let alone kill her, he lived for his son and the kids he coached. I feel so terrible for his son and the other children who must now find a way to cope with this tragedy. I feel in my heart he may be innocent and we are standing by him as his friends...

To Concerned wrote on Jul 28, 2007 4:57 AM:Thank you for standing by him....this is not the actions of the Melvin I know. He needs all of our support.

Standingby wrote on Jul 28, 2007 10:14 AM:It's been a couple of years since I lasted talked with Mel but I did work with him closely for years on the field. I never got that vibe from him. The "Big Smooth" GOOF that he was/is is not a deep down murderer!!!!!

concerned wrote on Jul 28, 2007 4:25 PM:Yes we are going to stand by him until he confesses or is proven innocent. And we just know in our heart that he will be innocent. I am just so sorry for his son being put through all of this as well as him. The ignorant people in the world will never give him a second chance once he is aquitted. The picture they showed in the newspaper just tore my heart up because they made him look like the killer they say he is. We plan on going in after his arraignment and getting his contact information to be able to send him letters and cards and put money on his books and let him know we are beside him 100%. I just hope his other friends and aquaintences will do the same. He needs to know he is not alone in there.

pin the tail on the donkey wrote on Jul 30, 2007 12:11 PM:Take off the blindfold! You ALL are way out in the Grandstands! MURDER 1 is not a small charge.......

to people wrote on Aug 1, 2007 7:56 AM:We are not defending him, merely voicing and explaining our decision to stand by him and not judge him by the crime he is accused of, rather wait to find out more and make our decision then. Yes a woman is dead and that is terrible and if it happened to a member of our family we would feel the exact same way if we knew the accused in the way we know mel. You cant just go and destroy a mans life without more concrete evidence, so far they havent even released how she died, revealed a murder weapon connect to him, or anything, the only connection they have made is that he lives with her and that she most likely died in the home. we are not trying to negate the fact that she was murdered.

a parent wrote on Aug 1, 2007 11:57 PM:My family has known Mel for a year now. He coached our son. Often enough the husband/wife or boy or girlfriend is the first suspected and often arrested. That doesn't mean that they are guilty. Mel is a good man that MAY have done a very bad thing. Please don't judge him by the small amount of information that you have got from the news/newspaper or internet. Like any criminal case wait until all of the evidence is presented. We don't know all the evidence all we know is that the police didn't think his interview matched the evidence that they had acquired so far. At the time of the interview it had only been hours after they started the investigation. Do you really think that the Murrieta police are that good? Let us all just wait for all the evidence before we hang him.

Murrieta police/Slam Dunk! wrote on Aug 2, 2007 8:59 AM:"Now your talking about the police?" All th evidence was clear! He was Wasted! It must be hot out there or something, Stuck inside, breathing too much A/C...

Do a little research wrote on Aug 5, 2007 5:57 PM:Ok, yes, I'm sure Mel was a great guy to all of you. But aren't all people nice, polite and sweet to the public? Besides, he's been convicted of GTA before. What does that say? Yes, we shouldn't pass any judgement yet, but this all smells rather fishy to me. One of the guys I knew in High School was sweet as can be, had a great outward appearance at got decent grades. This guy was loved by his teachers and helped me through many difficult times in my life. Turns out he was involved in drug sales and was killed in a gang shoot-out. Trust me, you think you know people, but you don't...

Friend Of Hers wrote on Aug 7, 2007 3:40 PM:Sure he seemed normal enough. Quiet never really out spoken. Never would have thought he had it in him. I think we have heard this about every serial kiler out there. A person action in a rational state of mind or in public or even sober can not be a great measure of one. Who this man is when he is drunk and alone in that cell. That is when you see a person's true colors.. I will pray for Him, for his family, and most of all those who lost a great friend and family member

To Friend Of Hers wrote on Aug 9, 2007 11:24 AM:Now he is being classified as a serial killer.....whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty....these thoughts reflect the evil that exists in today's society.

ExCop wrote on Aug 23, 2007 9:05 AM:Re: Melvin Shaw People....NEVER be so gullible to voice such solid statements that appear to uphold a person arrested on a Murder charge......The police are not as stupid as one may think. Also do not try to convict a suspect until the suspect has had a trial. However, because of my previous experience the arrest of Shaw so soon after the discovery of the victim speaks volumes.

worried wrote on Aug 23, 2007 9:33 PM:I think that everyone is one bad decision away from going to jail. I do not think that Mel Shaw set out to kill anyone, however a poor woman is dead behind an argument gone bad (bad decision). I will pray for Mel and the victims family. The evidence does not look good for Mel, however I am not a judge and Jury I will pray that justice is served to the correct individual. Only Mel, Elisa and God knows what really happened. Therefore, I will not judge, but pray that God blesses all that are involved and oversees this case so that justice prevails.

Ramona wrote on Jul 6, 2008 2:07 PM:I have know nel for 7 yrs. he is a dedicated friend and lives for his son. He coached my son for 6 years, if it wer"nt for him my son would of gave up,Mel gave him confident to continue I will forever belive in him. If you don't know him,do not judge him, if you know him ,I know you will stand by and support him like me.
