Oceanside group hopes to block the stadium idea

OCEANSIDE -- There appears to be a new team opposing the Chargers and this one doesn't belong to the National Football League.
A citizens group called "Go Away Chargers" has formed to fight the possibility that the San Diego football team could build a $700 million stadium on a city-owned golf course at Interstate 5 and Oceanside Boulevard, an attorney who said he represents the group stated Tuesday.
The attorney, David O'Connell, said Tuesday that he was retained as the spokesman for Go Away Chargers about a week ago. He said members of the group are from the Oceanside Boulevard area, but he declined to say how many there are, who they are, or when the group was formed.
The group's members "want to retain some confidentiality," he said.
"It's people who look at that park as a place they want to keep open, and can't understand why the city would want to sacrifice it on the altar of development," O'Connell said. "It's just a group of citizens who are mad as hell."
Chargers lead negotiator Mark Fabiani said Tuesday that he hadn't come across the group yet but would "love to meet them."
He said that he has met with many groups over the years who have been opposed to various plans put forth by the Chargers and that, while those critics may not change their minds, a dialogue can be started.
"That's really valuable," Fabiani said, about discussion with community groups on either side of an issue.
Interim City Manager Peter Weiss said Tuesday that the formation of an opposition group is great, but that the city hasn't "even started looking at whether it's feasible for the Chargers to come (to Oceanside), because they haven't indicated they're coming."
"We're exploring the options," Weiss said. "There are nothing that I consider negotiations at this point. I don't consider them negotiations until the Chargers say they're coming to Oceanside."
The Chargers announced last year that they were eyeing a site in Oceanside as a possible home for a new stadium. The property, which now holds the Center City Municipal Golf Course and is known as Goat Hill because of its steep terrain, is tightly ringed by businesses, apartments, homes and parkland.
The city has leased the property, which is designated as parkland, through 2011 to operators of the 18-hole golf course.
To move forward with a stadium, a majority of Oceanside voters would have to approve changing the site's parkland designation. The team's goal is to choose a location for the new stadium by the end of this year and go to the ballot in November 2008.
The choice hinges, in big part, on a market survey due out this month assessing whether a stadium and as much as 2 million square feet of high-end office space would be a recipe for the stadium's economic success. The team is also considering two sites in Chula Vista.
Several people in Oceanside who have spoken out against the Chargers coming here said Tuesday they hadn't heard about the group, but are glad a such a movement may be emerging.
Community activist Nadine Scott, who lives in the area east of the Oceanside golf course, said organized opposition to the stadium idea is welcome news.
"There have been a lot of people who have raised concerns," she said, about the possibility the Chargers could come to Oceanside. "I think this (opposition group) is what we need. Right now everything is under the veil of land negotiations, but there's a lot more going on than that."
A quick look at the fledgling "Go Away Chargers" Web site, goawaychargers.netrootz.com, shows that the group supports the Chargers, but wants them to stay at Qualcomm Stadium.
The team, however, has been unable in the last four years to reach an agreement with the city of San Diego on building another stadium there.
The Chargers can leave the stadium after the 2008 season by paying off the balance on $60 million in bonds that the city issued to expand the facility in 1997.

It sounds to me that the city will give away Goat Hill and roll over for the Chargers at the slightest opportunity. WHO IS MAKING MONEY HERE? "HINT"-BIG STADIUM = BIG HOTEL's, and they are now being built by our pier and other locations to accomidate all the FANS! MARKET SURVEY-BULL! They are already building the hotels! TWEED?

This idea, like most of Sanchez's, was a losser from the start. By the way, what happened to all the good quotes from our Mayor on the stadium non-negotiations? It looks alot like the City is backing off now, maybe there is a story here, dig deeper.

Jimmy the III wrote on Aug 1, 2007 12:44 AM:The only way I feel the Chargers should be allowed to come to Oceanside is to do the following: 1) be subject to the will of the voters in an immediate special sports recreation district taking care of all traffic, social and environmental concerns with not one dime on the back of the tax payers and only one appeal to the City Council, no courts 2) any non-profit building, city building, private home, facility or enterprise displaced would have to be relocated by the chargers to an like area within the city at full cost born by the chargers 3) that the chargers would have to build and operate at their expense year round for the benefit of the city the stadium and a mid size convention center on any stadium grounds and provide preferential employment to Oceanside’rs, if they don’t then rent would have to be paid for the land the stadium would sit upon at going rates for developed property, in any case after 20 years the stadium would become the property of the Citizens of Oceanside unless improved and renegotiated by the chargers 4) The Chargers would have to become part of the Oceanside community fabric including ownership and management relocation to live and reside in Oceanside What are the chances of this happening? Slim to none. As the chargers ownership don’t really care about Oceanside as we are merely being played, dare them to commit and lay it all on the line, they won’t but if they did they'd do these pro-Oceanside points

Hello O'side...It's time to evolve wrote on Aug 1, 2007 6:45 AM:O'side needs to evolve and the same ol' voices of the "small town" hey day keep coming out. Face it, the City needs to grow -- i.e., build hotels and a strong business and convention venue to move away from its military style dependence. Failing to evolve will essentially kill off any hope of making this city a true place to visit on the California map. When you go out of town and someone asks where you're from, how often do you say "Oceanside, Calif." and get a response of "where's that?" You quickly reply, "oh, it's about 30 miles north of San Diego." Let's make it a place on the map where people want to be. It's good for our City, it's good for community.
Cry Me A River wrote on Aug 1, 2007 7:10 AM:How do these groups like the one mentioned in the Oceanside story and the San Marcos folks fighting Palomar Station get the funds to pay a lawyer to act as mouthpieces for their agendas? Oh, that's right, I forgot that in California there is a lawyer under every rock and most will do anything to get their names shown in the press. Its' just a shame that groups such as Go Away Chargers (wow, that's a creative name!)can seemingly find it more advantageous to pronounce their intentions in a threatening way instead of approaching the opposite party to arrange meetings that would allow these agendas to be shared.
To Jimmy the III wrote on Aug 1, 2007 7:27 AM:I pity the Chargers as they try to convince ignorant, narrow minded individuals such as yourself that this project has merits. First of all, your criteria that the Chargers ownership reside in Oceanside is assinine. Dean Spanos has lived in San Diego County for several years; according to you he should live in Mission Valley now rather than a neighborhood of his choice. I applaud him for at least living in the geographical area from which his team draws most of its' fans. Secondly, I'm sure the Chargers - or any other business located in Oceanside - would love to be able to rely on the Oceanside community to fill the hundreds of positions needed to operate profitably, but the neighborhood McDonalds can't recruit enough help from your community, how do you expect a huge enterprise such as an NFL team to do so? While you are at it Jimmy why don't you insist that the Chargers raise all the pigskin in Oceanside needed to manufacture the footballs used as well? Lighten up all of you Jimmy's out there and at least give the Chargers an opportunity to present their proposals before demanding that they get out of your town.

Remember people they can't build a stadium with out a vote of the citizens. I think this is just leverage for the deal they want to make with Chula Vista. As for Nadine Scott she is against any development and loves to see her name in the newspaper. Let the facts come out and if they do want to move to Oceanside then let the citizens vote.

dave from oceanside wrote on Aug 1, 2007 3:32 PM:I think Oceanside will have a tough time making the golf course and the surrounding homes proclaimed a blighted area. Last year, the State Legislature listened to voters and passed several new laws to protect peoples’ homes. We made it harder for government to proclaim an area “blighted.” Raising the requirements for an area to be declared blighted helps protect property owners. An area has to be declared blighted before a redevelopment agency can use eminent domain. Raising the requirements for an area to be declared blighted helps protect property owners. To keep the process out in the open, we increased state oversight by involving the Attorney General, the Department of Finance and the Department of Housing and Community Development to protect your rights as a property owner. Now that these bills have been signed into law, California has clearly taken steps to protect the rights of homeowners and other property owners.

The row houses would have lifted our propety values! Another developement turned down was new homes by the Elks Club. Instead the City Opted for buying an old apartment by the Elks, it should be torn down, to be converted to low income housing! Another project was the building of new homes above a commercial BUSINES SUCH AS THE ONES IN CARLSBAD- near the Army / Navy Academy on the coast highway.
