California's stem cell research program today named as its interim president Richard A. Murphy, the former president and chief executive of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla.

Until July 1, Murphy was on the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee, which governs the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The institute was established by California voters in 2004 when they approved Proposition 71, which dedicated $3 billion to stem cell research to cure diseases.

Murphy will take over on Sept. 1 from Lori Hoffman, who has been the institute’s acting president since May. She succeeded Zach W. Hall, the institute's founding president, who retired. Hoffman will remain Chief Finance and Administrative Officer for the agency.
