Community News briefs: Press club to host public relations expert

RANCHO BERNARDO -- The Press Club of North San Diego County will meet at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 10 at the Remington Club Phase II, 16916 Hierba Drive.
David Nuffer, founder and chairman of the large San Diego public relations agency Nuffer, Smith, Tucker Inc., will speak on "Is Public Relations Really Necessary?" Nuffer has more than 42 years experience in the public relations field and has won many awards for his work.

10 North art show extended
ESCONDIDO -- 10 North, an artists' group featuring 10 North County women artists, has extended its "Blue Moon in June" exhibit through Sept. 4 at its studio/gallery, 115 W. Grand Ave. The original artwork is created in water media, acrylic, fabric and collage. An artists' reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m Aug. 11.
Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. Information: (760) 480-9000.
10 North artists are Carol Black, Pam Brasel, Susan Avery Clark, Diane Detwiler, Lucinda Foy, Helen Shafer Garcia, Phyllis Kelley, Jane LaFazio, Rhonda Miles and Jeannie Moore. Their next exhibition, "Birds, Bees, Cats, Dogs," will run from Sept. 7 through Nov. 6.
Water-wise gardening is the topic
DEL MAR -- The San Diego Horticultural Society will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 in the Surfside Race Place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd.
Judy Wigand, owner of the specialty nursery Judy's Perennials, will offer ideas on how to create attractive dry landscapes. She also will talk about a water-wise bird and butterfly garden designed to attract many species.

Genealogy group plans meetings
CARLSBAD -- The North San Diego County Genealogical Society will hold a business and sharing meeting at 10 a.m. Aug. 14 in the Carlsbad City Council chambers, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive.
The Computer-Oriented Genealogy Group, sponsored by North San Diego County Genealogical Society, will meet at 1 p.m. that day at the same location. Claire Santos-Daigle, owner of Photos Made Perfect in Chula Vista, will speak on "Digital Image Editing" and discuss techniques for restoring old family photographs.

SD Track Club to host race
OCEANSIDE -- The San Diego Track Club, a nonprofit running organization that awards scholarships to high schools students and track athletes, will host its "Wild Duck 5K XC Race" at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 18 at Guajome Park.

Democratic club to host fundraiser
ENCINITAS -- Francine Busby will be the mistress of ceremonies for the Rancho North Coast Democratic Club's Garden Party fundraiser from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 18 at 467 Fulvia St.
The guest speaker will be Jesse Durfee, chairman of the San Diego Democratic Party. The three Democratic contenders for the 50th Congressional District seat also will be on hand to meet, greet and discuss their issues. International White Space recording artists Rebeca and David Randle will entertain with original and popular music, while attendees enjoy appetizers, desserts, wine and other beverages.

Golf tourney to benefit Casa de Amparo
VISTA -- The eighth annual Fore the Children Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 20 at the Vista Valley Country Club. The event will benefit Casa de Amparo, a nonprofit organization in Oceanside that provides child abuse prevention and treatment services throughout San Diego County.
Player check-in will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the shotgun tournament will start at 12:30 p.m. Cost of $250 covers golf, lunch and an awards dinner.
Live and silent auction items will include a Fred Couples-signed Masters 2006 Golf Tournament flag, a seven-day Caribbean or Mexican cruise for two via Holland American Cruise Line, four VIP tickets to "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" accompanied by a backstage tour and more.

Leadership North County applicants sought
SAN MARCOS -- Cal State San Marcos Extended Studies is accepting applications through Aug. 15 for Leadership North County, an annual program that helps local leaders learn to build coalitions and master the complexities of policy issues.
Beginning Sept. 20, selected applicants will spend one day per month learning about issues that face North County, such as transportation, education, housing, tourism and energy.

Motorcycle run to benefit Labradors
NORTH COUNTY -- Labrador Harbor will host the first "Kruise 4 K-9s" motorcycle run to raise funds for Labrador retrievers in need Aug. 25. Motorcyclists will blaze a trail from Oceanside to the Menghini Winery in Julian.
Registration fee is $25 per person, which includes an event T-shirt and lunch at the winery. Nonriders can assist Labrador Harbor by sponsoring a rider, participating in prize drawings or making a donation to the cause. All proceeds from the event will benefit families who have requested assistance through Labrador Harbor.

Kodaly, Solfege music training offered
SAN MARCOS --Palomar College offers training in the Kodaly Specialized Music Education program and the Solfege method, which concentrates on building basic musicianship skills. A combination of Kodaly and Solfege courses provides detailed preparation in music instruction and performance for college students and professional teachers.
The college now offers Kodaly I and Solfege I classes as TV courses. Course information and scheduling for this fall is as follows:

Corvette club hosts charity golf tournament
NORTH COUNTY -- The North Coast Vettes club organized and hosted a charity golf tournament July 20 at the CampİPendleton Marine Memorial Golf Course. Area clubs that supported the event were Corvettes of Temecula Valley, Corvettes of San Diego and the Oceanside Newcomers and Friends Club.
Proceeds from the event will be presented equally to the Boys & Girls Club of Oceanside and Camp Pendleton's Military Outreach Ministry and Armed Services YMCA.
North Coast Vettes is sponsored by Weseloh Chevrolet and meets at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of every month at Grandma's Hilltop Hideaway Cafe in Oceanside. Information: http://www.northcoastvettes.org.
United Cerebral Palsy golf tourney set
ENCINITAS -- The 25th annual VIP Golf Classic to benefit United Cerebral Palsy of San Diego County will take place Aug. 17 at the Encinitas Ranch Golf Course. Check-in will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 1:15 p.m. Festivities will continue with an awards dinner after tournament play is finished. Sons of American Revolution to meet

Book drive to benefit children
This month, San Diego County Borders and Waldenbooks bookstores are working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego to promote literacy and give books to children in need by hosting a month-long book drive. Customers are encouraged to purchase and donate new children's and young adult books at the bookstores. Also, a percentage of total sales from the donated books will be given to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego for its reading and education programs.
Mystery writing workshop slated
SAN DIEGO -- Two Carlsbad writers -- Taffy Cannon and Dr. Eva Shaw -- will lead a mystery writing workshop, offering "how-to" clues for writers, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 1 at the Joyce Beers Community Center, off of University Avenue between 10th and Vermont streets, in Hillcrest. The workshop is sponsored by Sisters in Crime, a coed group of mystery readers and writers.
