CARLSBAD -- The third annual "Eric Sears 'Life is an Adventure' 5K Run/walk" is set for Aug. 18, and race organizers are looking for runners.

Proceeds from the race will fund scholarships for Carlsbad High School seniors who show leadership qualities, have a goal in life and at least a 3.0 grade point average, according to race organizer Sheryl Reiner. The Eric Sears Foundation has funded about $20,000 in scholarships since 2004, Reiner said.

All of the $35 race fee goes to the foundation, Reiner said.

The race commemorates Eric Sears, a Carlsbad High School student who died in July 2004 while camping with another friend amid the massive boulders at Joshua Tree National Park's Jumbo Rocks campground. His friend told authorities that they tried a tea made of jimson weed the night before Eric disappeared. Authorities have speculated that effects from the tea, which can cause hallucinations and dehydration, may have led Eric to wander into the surrounding desert, where his body was later found.
