SAN DIEGO -- The Chargers escaped a potentially devastating loss on Monday when a foot injury suffered by Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jamal Williams was discovered to be only a sprain.

Williams injured the foot during Sunday's exhibition loss to Seattle. He underwent an MRI on Monday, and the exam ruled out a more serious injury. Williams is considered day to day.

His availability for Saturday's exhibition game at St. Louis has not yet been determined.

Williams, 31, has played in the past two Pro Bowls and is considered one of the top defensive tackles in the NFL. He had 84 tackles last season, third most on the Chargers.

Before receiving the MRI results, coach Norv Turner professed to being worried about Williams' injury.

"I have a concern any time someone says it's a foot injury," Turner said.

Also disclosed Monday was that linebacker Anthony Waters strained a knee during Sunday's game. The good news for Waters is that the injury was to his right knee and not his left.

Waters, a third-round draft pick from Clemson, tore the anterior cruicate ligament in his left knee last September.

Safety Eric Weddle, who suffered a slight ankle sprain, is expected to play against the Rams. The other players hurt in Sunday's game were cornerback Steve Gregory (quadriceps contusion) and linebackers Marques Harris (shoulder) and Jyles Tucker (concussion).

Roy wrote on Aug 14, 2007 8:08 AM:See guys like James who have bought into the hype call fans like me negative for expressing some honest concerns. Some fans blindly cheer their team on and i understand that, but some people like me are questioning the hype mostly because of Turner. Turner is an offensive genius. The knock on him is his ability to be a head coach. Watch video of Turner's interviews and of how he runs his practices. Compare the video to Schottenheimer's from last year. Anyone that does not see the radical difference and have worries is again a Charger fan that blindly follows the team no matter what. Oh and James I already have the tickets to the games I want. Knowing alot of other season ticket holders has its benefits.

JAMES wrote on Aug 14, 2007 9:51 AM:I DO NOT WANT TO SEE JAMAAL WILLIAMS NEAR ANY PRE-SEASON GAME!!!!!!!!!!! THE OFFENSE HAS LT, THE DEFENSE HAS JAMAAL! NOTE TO NORV: PUT JAMAAL IN SOME NICE BAGGY SHORTS, FLIP FLOPS, TANK TOP AND THEN SIT HIS BIG BUTT ON THE BENCH UNTIL THE BEARS COME TO TOWN. HOW DO YOU MAKE A MONSTER MEANER?...DON'T FEED HIM!

Audrey James wrote on Aug 14, 2007 11:49 AM:I LOVE THE SAN DIEGO CHARGERS I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!! LOVE YOU GATES & LT

Dave wrote on Aug 14, 2007 1:21 PM:Roy why do you even bother, you obviously have us falling all the way to the bottom of the division. As to these season ticket holders whosold you tickets, they must be the same ones who sell their tickets to Raiders fans.

markus wrote on Aug 14, 2007 2:52 PM:now I know which blog to tune into this year. truly a microcosm of our gun-shy/ front-runner mentality here in Diego; the end result of a lifetime of debilitating losses. The NE game obviously still burns deep. This has divided our city into 2 camps: the Pro AJ camp who drink the Charger Punch (of which I'm a proud member), and the AJ/ Spanos Haters who want nothing less than embarrassing failure for our Boys.

markus wrote on Aug 14, 2007 2:59 PM:It appears clear Roy and Bobbie have been wailing away for the better part of the past five years bemoaning the release of Seau...Brees... Donnie... Shottie, and Rodney (the only bonafide mistake in my opinion). In that same span he has added current Pro-Bowlers - Rivers, Gates, Mcneal, Merriman, Hartwick, & Kaeding as well as future Bowlers Dielman, Castillo & Phillips. And behind all this is a bevy of developing talent - VJ, DraFlo, Cromartie, Weddle, Davis, Dobbins, Waters, Floyd.... and ALL of these guys are under the age of 26...8 of them are 24 or younger!!!! This is the BEST (and youngest)roster this franchise has ever assembled. They scored 59 TD's with 61 Sacks & 14 wins - better than any Fouts-era club and with a 1st year QB?

markus wrote on Aug 14, 2007 3:00 PM:Future Key contract impasses aside (Merriman, Mcneal..Castillo, Rivers) this team is stocked for 5-7 years minimum. Remember - this was the WORST team in football 4+ years ago ( 2 first pick selections in 3 years?)

markus wrote on Aug 14, 2007 3:05 PM:Roy & Bobbie - what do you guys want? Lucky wins? Their only 3 losses came by field goals in games they were either tied or led with less the 2 minutes left. They came back form 17 points on the road - back-to-back?? They scored 42 Points in the 2nd half at Cinci alone?? 28 In Denver??? This is a dynamic offensive team which scored 70 points more than anyone else in the League - with a top 4 fantasy Defense? Do the math, Geeks, and stop trying to undermine the excitement that follows a city as it rises from the ashes!!

Garrett wrote on Aug 14, 2007 6:19 PM:Go bolts! super bowl or bust!

JAMES wrote on Aug 14, 2007 9:33 PM:Blindly? Roy, you didn't answer the questions...have you ever played a down of football in your life? I'm guessing you're one of the dork fans that plays fantasy, goes to every practice, and thinks they know football. Are you still lamenting Marty's dismissal. The same Marty who couldn't game time manage his way out of Pow Warner game. Do you recall the 4th and 11 against New England? Do you recall the ridiculous challenge? When Bill B. makes a move...we say, "yeah, that makes sense!" Whenever Marty made a move ...we say, " what the !#%^....Do you Marty sitting on a lead against Baltimore? Do you recall the Jet playoff game where he sits on the ball for three straight downs and ask a rookie kicker to make a forty yard field goal in the rain? Dude, just go back to your fantasy draft, your silly assessing of practices...seriously, have you ever participated in a practice? It's not about the pace of a practice it's about the players getting the message. Seriously, you're a joke. And Bobby, Cesaire, Bingham and McKinney can all play nose...Bingham and McKinney are risers...

JAMES wrote on Aug 14, 2007 9:36 PM:And one more thing Roy...INTERVIEWS? HOW RIDICULOUS ARE YOU? Bill B. is dreadful interview...does he look like he inspires anyone? Norm Chow...zero...Andy Reid..Do you get it...You don't have to be an English major and a yeller to be a good coach...Marty hasn't one a playoff game since when?

Roy wrote on Aug 14, 2007 9:59 PM:Hey Markus yes last year's Chargers were an offensive powerhouse. But last year is over. When was the last time the Chargers had winning records on back to back seasons? In Turner we don't trust.

Roy wrote on Aug 14, 2007 10:48 PM:The team evenually takes on the demeaner of the coach James. Yes I played football and no I don't waste my time with the fantasy stuff. As dreadful as the Schottenheimer playoff calls were and as awful as Marty's playoff history has been what would make anyone think that Turner's 1-1 playoff record and 30 more losses than wins in the regular season would somehow translate into a better result for this years' Chargers. I was happy to see Marty go. He choked in too many playoff games. But come on is Turner really better?

JAMES wrote on Aug 15, 2007 5:20 AM:Hey Roy, the Chargers have had winning seasons the last three years...SHUT UP ALREADY!

Roy wrote on Aug 15, 2007 7:34 AM:Three winning seasons? 8-8 is not a winning season James. And 2 playoff losses too yeah we went far.

diehard wrote on Aug 15, 2007 11:26 AM:to all ur guys that have just started following the chargers i say Hope u r not a fairwearter fan. Me?? I have been with the chargers since "84" when i went to my first game and have followed them and will support them thru out the footbaqll season..If we can pick up where we left off from last season now that marty is gone we can be an awesone team for the next 3 yrs and will have teams not wanting to play us for we can win from any position on the field and we will On game days i am there yelling and screaming and giving my team the 12th man on the field..So support and stand beside ur team and when it is time to yell "YELL" but till then keep ur mouths shut it is already hot in san diego and we don't need anymore hot air.. DIEHARD

JAMES wrote on Aug 16, 2007 12:03 PM:Roy, what 8-8? 2004: 12-4 2005: 9-7 (missed playoffs last game) 2006: 14-2 Get your facts straight!
