WILDOMAR ---- It's been a good year for parks in Wildomar.
Marna O'Brien Park was back open and better than ever, residents said, during its dedication Saturday.
"I think this is an excellent way to welcome back the park and for residents of this soon-to-be city to get to know each other," said Art Calderon, a new Wildomar resident. "It's really a nice park."
The event ---- with music, food and a movie at dusk ----marked the third reopening of one of the area's parks. Marna O'Brien Park is located at 20505 Palomar Rd. and is the largest park in Wildomar.
The Ortega Trails Recreation and Park District was disbanded in 2000, a year after property owners rejected a $25-per-year fee for upkeep. Voters had been suspicious of the community's park district, which allegedly mishandled funds. As a result Marna O'Brien, Windsong and Regency Heritage parks have been closed for nearly seven years.
But last August, voters approved an annual parks fee of up to $45 to reopen and maintain the three parks. The parks are now maintained by the Riverside County Economic Development Agency.
The Marna O'Brien park was designed by David Evans and Associates and built by Western Rim Contractors at a total cost of $4.3 million. The sports and recreation park will be open from dawn to dusk daily.
"The design and construction went pretty smooth," said Jeff Scoot, a senior associate park planner. "Now, we're just waiting for the storm and sewer drains to be completed. Those improvements should be done soon."
Marna O'Brien Park has three baseball fields, a concession stand, restrooms, two basketball courts, picnic areas, shade structures and a playground for children.
Matt Lauritsen, 9, of Wildomar, had a blue mouth from the free Sno-cones given to attendees. He wasted no time picking his favorite feature of the 9-acre park.
"I like the baseball diamonds," Matt blurted out before continuing to eat candy.
Velina Manus, of Wildomar, also looked forward to the possibility of baseball games at the facility that is bordered by mountains of the Santa Ana Range.
"The last time I was her was this past Easter. The weeds were knee-high and the area was gated off," Manus said. "Now, this is a really nice facility. The only thing I wish they would have done differently was leave a couple more trees ---- but it's still a beautiful park."
Terry Woodruff, facilities manager for the community services division of the Riverside County Economic Development Agency, said one more park is on the way for those who live in Wildomar and Lake Elsinore. Perret Park, located at Perret Boulevard and Grand Avenue, is scheduled to open on Sept. 15. That park will have access to Lake Elsinore beaches.

Bridgette wrote on Aug 19, 2007 11:18 AM:It was a wonderful event! The movie in the park with the mountains behind the screen, the stars and the moon, it was all so beautiful!
Modern wrote on Aug 19, 2007 6:18 PM:Now Wildomar needs a skate park. Nice event though. My kids loved it. I was there for a few hours.
Once Again wrote on Aug 19, 2007 7:36 PM:Where is your proof that "the community's park district, which allegedly mishandled funds"? This has been asked before where is the proof. Just because a bunch of old bats said there was mismanagement doesn't mean it happened. Once Again the board members at that time should sue you because you are not stating facts only opinions even after an independent audit was conducted every year!!!
Bridgette wrote on Aug 19, 2007 8:14 PM:A skate park is our next project!
Sparkplug wrote on Aug 19, 2007 9:03 PM:Bridgette, if the citizens of Wildomar want a skate part, there are several ways to connect with recreation resource advocates that will guide ones efforts though the process. Sheryl should get one in touch with such advocacy.
To Bridgette and all wrote on Aug 20, 2007 8:05 PM:How so nice to know that Bridgette Moore has announced a skate part is “our next project”. Wildomar voters approved, by a very, very slim margin, the refurbishing and basic maintenance of the three existing parks and the building of the long promised fourth Eastside Park. Wouldn’t it be nice if Bridgette and the rest of the parks committee actually fulfilled their basic obligations before embarking on a skate park that the voters have not approved? Here we go again, a new high-profile project for the sake of publicity, rather than completing the essentials that were planned and promised. Before you go off on this tangent, how about finishing the work in progress? If there is extra funding or resources out there for our parks, let’s get the sewer connections in, lets have operational sinks and restrooms, let’s deliver on the fourth park that has been promised for years. Or maybe it’s just that the skate park would garner a better “photo op” for erstwhile city council candidates than having toilets that actually flushed!
To Nicole wrote on Aug 20, 2007 8:12 PM:How about getting your facts right? The voters approved a $28 fee for the maintenance of the three existing parks once they were refurbished with County funds. There was and is no approval for a skate park...at least not from the voters. Fees can be raised to $45 only if and when the fourth Eastside park is complete and opened. Sad to say the Parks committe people have lost sight of their commitments to the voters and are pandering to a few vocal people who want more entertainment opportunities for their children.
To Sparkplug wrote on Aug 20, 2007 8:30 PM:Get this right. Bridgette and a small minority may want a skate park, but that certainly doesn't equate to the "citizens of Wildomar". The parks people, Bridgette included, haven't a clue about what most people want. And evidently they don't care either. This is one more demonstration of Bridgette thinking she knows more about what is good for Wildomar than we do. They have limited funds and need to reserve them for what people voted for. Yah, we're supposed to have a say!
Bridgette wrote on Aug 20, 2007 11:20 PM:If you are going to use my name in your blogs then have the guts to use your name! [Editor's note: Our blog policy does not allow the use of full names.]
Bridgette wrote on Aug 20, 2007 11:28 PM:"To Bridgette" the sewer problems at Marna will be finished and have nothing to do with the Parks not fulfilling any promises. Too bad the Californian doesn't check for accuracy because your blogs are not correct.
Jon wrote on Aug 21, 2007 8:08 AM:Why is there so much Bridgette bashing going on? If it wasn't for her the parks would still be closed. The voters wanted the parks open so why are the volunteers being criticized for wanting more parks? I say we should be thanking them for their accomplishment. Thank you park committee!
To Bridgette wrote on Aug 21, 2007 8:17 AM:If The Californian checked blogs for accuracy, a huge percentage of what you write would be never be printed! Don’t try to side track the readers. The voters of Wildomar did NOT give you and the Parks committee carte blanche to do whatever you want. Get down to basics. Fulfill your campaign commitments. Get the existing three parks finished and operating smoothly, get all the security and vandalism problems resolved, and work with County officials to get the fourth Eastside park built. That’s what we voted for, and that’s what we want. It is absurd to think you are actually planning to rip a newly refurbished, recently reopened park apart to build a skate park when these other things are being left undone. Stop patting yourself on the back and complaining when you are called to task for not taking care of these things. The Wildomar voters approved maintaining the existing and previously planned parks not some grandiose expansion plan.
Small minds, Big mouths wrote on Aug 21, 2007 10:27 AM:There are two kinds of people in this world. Those that work hard to accomplish something and those that believe complaining is a form of accomplishment. A small group of people, with the help of the majority of the community, brought parks back to Wildomar. A small vocal minority feels the need to stand in the shadows and call names. In both instances, you know who you are.
Bridgette wrote on Aug 21, 2007 1:55 PM:Thank you "Jon" and "Small minds, Big mouths." Marna's sewer problems will be fixed and nothing is "being left undone." I have to wonder that since this blogger talks about me so much if that person isn't secretly in love with me or something. It's like an obsession. Just to let you know, I'm happily married so you can stop thinking and talking about me now! Thanks.
To Martha: wrote on Aug 21, 2007 2:53 PM:Re your comments: No one is going off on a tangent. It took five years to get the current three parks open. Hopefully, future recreation facilities will not take as long. Due to the large number of tract houses built in Wildomar over the last five years (combined with the kids in Windsong who are now adolescents) - we now have a large number of kids and teens who are skateboarders. Several of these skateboarders are acting as representatives for the larger group. They made their voices heard through petitions, news articles and going to local events to talk to the public about the possibility of a skatepark. They know it may not happen for them personally, but they didn't walk away....they plan to keep going so other kids in Wildomar will have a designated area to skateboard (rather than in the streets and in commercial areas). Why are you and others hell-bent on making negative assumptions about everything? This group will be looking for grants and donation of land. More power to these junior community activists who are committed and willing to work for others. I hope we see more young people coming forward in our community to volunteer.
To all wrote on Aug 21, 2007 7:49 PM:Readers should note that Bridgette has once again resorted to subterfuge and inflammatory remarks rather than addressing the very real and substantial issues I raised. This is neither a mark of leadership nor an attribute of someone you can trust. I have no intention of stooping to that level or responding in kind. In the absence of any acceptable defense for their actions, the Parks committee has plainly ignoring the will of the Wildomar residents. They have been caught red-handed in failing to follow the directions and wishes of the voters. They’ve gone off with County personnel, laying plans for a stake park instead of finishing their authorized work. They aren't waiting for some future grants or donations of land, but are planning to rip apart a newly refurbished park to build a skate park. I am aware of the community’s needs and not opposed to building a state park in due time, but am opposed to substituting that project for completing the designated work at hand. I was at the last Parks and Wildomar MAC meetings where John Lloyd and the County planner openly discussed these plans. If you want to lay the groundwork for future cooperation and support for more and better parks, finish the ones we have and make them safe and useable. And, please, let’s not hear any more about how appreciative we should be of volunteers who take the bit between their teeth and do what they damn well please, instead of what they have been chartered to do. Call it what you like, it's high time to call these people to task.
Jon wrote on Aug 21, 2007 9:40 PM:To all of you who are critical of the Park Committee: It seems that the park committee can do no right according to you. You seem to have lots of energy. Too bad you didn't put it to a constructive use instead of criticizing every move they make. If you are really unhappy with the way things are going you should step in and volunteer hundreds of hours to make it right.
Bridgette wrote on Aug 21, 2007 10:15 PM:To: "To All" I didn't make any inflammatory remarks. I merely asked that you stop talking about me. I do not know who you are since you don't use your first name. How can I make an inflammatory remark when I don't even know who you are??? I consistenly answered that Marna's sewer problems will be fixed. It will take 4 months or more to fix the sewer. So instead of leaving a park locked up for 4 more months the County and the Parks Committee decided to open Marna with portapotties. If the decision was made to keep the park closed for 4 more months then I'm sure you would have complained about that too. Again, the sewer problem isn't because of the Parks Committee. The sewer problem is because Marna didn't pass the PERQ test and now has to go to sewer lines. If you were at the Parks mtg like you said then you heard all of this being explained and discussed. Why are you harping on something that is in the process of being fixed? It doesn't make any sense. You would have heard the whole discussion about putting in lateral lines. Then you would have heard John say he was going to ask for a meeting and an update. The parks are safe and useable!
Bridgette wrote on Aug 21, 2007 10:34 PM:Yes a skate park was DISCUSSED and that was it. It wasn't an item on the agenda so NO action was taken. NO vote was done. It was an idea. It was a suggestion. You heard a discussion about a future skate park. There is NO ground breaking taking place tomorrow. How does anything get done? First an idea is thought of. Then discussion takes place. Research is done. You are flying of the handle on an issue that was just a discussion.
A message to Bridgette wrote on Aug 23, 2007 10:35 PM:I read this article and the comments section. I voted for the yearly increase in tax to refurbish and open the parks. I'm thrilled that my neighborhood park has opened. I am thankful that there were volunteers like you willing to take this on and dedicate so much of your time to this project. I won't criticize the end products because I could have become a volunteer and made a difference if I wanted to. What I will comment on is your August 21st 1:55 post. It really sounded so immature. Don't stoop to that level, especially when you are in the eye of the community.
a friend wrote on Aug 28, 2007 9:26 PM:I love the new parks! They are so beautiful! I lived in Wildomar my whole life and not even once was there a park to go to. My mother used to take us to the one in Lake Elsinore to ride our bikes and play at "their" park. Then I remembered her taking us to old Marna we went in and all there was was a rusty old play swing set and a lot of weeds. I wasnt even sure if we were allowed to be there. Now kids can go to their own community parks that are new, beautiful, and close to go to. And its not for just now its for everyone in the future too! :) Thanks wildomar parks committee!!!!!!!
Darren W. wrote on Aug 28, 2007 9:33 PM:there should be a skatepark in Wildomar. There are so many of those kids everywhere. They need a place to go instead of on my driveway haha. I hope we get one.
