Phillips emerges from "Lights Out" shadow

ST. LOUIS ---- Linebacker Shaun Phillips got hit with ėThe Other Guy' tag last season. During Saturday's first quarter, he was ėThe Guy.' Often playing in the shadow of Pro Bowl linebacker Shawne Merriman, Phillips forced two fumbles and had a sack in the opening quarter of the Chargers' preseason game against the Rams.
"I was just out there trying to do my part," Phillips said after the 30-13 victory. "Everybody on this team has a role, and I just wanted to go out there and help my team try to get a victory, whether it's preseason or regular season."
Phillips had 11 1/2 sacks last season and earned a contract extension that runs through the 2012 season.
Merriman had an NFL-high 17 sacks and isn't a big fan of ėThe Other Guy' label that found Phillips.
"I never looked at him as ėThe Other Guy' in the first place," Merriman said. "I just try to go out there and dominate each play."
Gross injured
Running back Tyronne Gross dislocated his right kneecap midway through the final quarter. Gross will be re-evaluated to determine the length of time he'll be sidelined.
"Tyronne Gross has worked so hard," Chargers coach Norv Turner said. "He's such a neat kid and a talented player. I was really disappointed to see him get hurt."
Gross spent last season on the team's practice squad.
He played his college football at Eastern Oregon.
The only other injury reported after the game was a high ankle sprain suffered by defensive tackle Brandon McKinney.
Talented backs watch
As expected, LaDainian Tomlinson didn't suit up for the contest. He wasn't the only star running back to serve in the role of spectator.
St. Louis featured back Steven Jackson dressed for the game but took the field only for the Rams' first offensive play. He didn't touch the ball.
Brian Leonard, a second-round pick out of Rutgers, handled the bulk of the rushing workload for the Rams, carrying 17 times for 49 yards. Michael Turner led the Chargers with 48 yards on nine carries.
Tackle machine
New starting inside linebacker Steven Cooper had 12 tackles in the first half, a total that would have represented a career high if it were a regular-season contest. Cooper had 11 stops against Seattle last December.
Cooper, however, wasn't satisfied despite his abundance of tackles.
"Honestly, no," Cooper said. "I wish I did a little bit better job tackling-wise."
Et cetera
WR Craig Davis started ahead of Malcom Floyd and caught two passes for 9 yards. Vincent Jackson led the Chargers with three receptions. ... P Mike Scifres had his typical impressive performance, averaging 52.3 yards on three punts. Scifres had a 64-yard punt in the second quarter and a 56-yarder in the third. His short punt of 37 yards was downed at the Rams' 6 by Kassim Osgood. . ... The Chargers waived defensive end Barry Cryer, an undrafted rookie free agent from Nebraska. ... Jackson twice got called for penalties for moving before the snap of the ball. Floyd was called for a false start, his penalty coming just two plays after Jackson's second miscue.

Tony wrote on Aug 19, 2007 2:19 PM:Why don't the chargers use Antonio Cromaetie instead of Quentin Jammer at CB? Jammer looks the same as last year no improvement at all. It's seems to me he's outplay by the opposition teams to many miss tackles teams and looks like he's moonlighting. Thank You Tony 8/19/02

Daniel wrote on Aug 19, 2007 6:20 PM:WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!? DO YOU HAVE THE SLIGHTEST IDEA HOW GOOD THESE CORNERS FOR THE CHARGERS ARE? TONY YOU SAY QUINTEN JAMMER LOOKS THE SAME AS LAST YEAR, HELLO THATS A GOOD THING Q SHOULD OF WENT TO THE PRO BOWL LAST YEAR. AND THE ONLY REASON FLORENCE DIDN'T IS BECAUSE HIS HANDS ARE MADE OF STONE, BUT THATS WHY HE'S NOT A RECEIVER. IF THEY ARE SO BAD THEN WHY DOES AJ SMITH ALLOW THEM TO STAY. FLORENCE IS ON HIS WAY OUT BECAUSE HE IS NOT A FAVORITE OF SMITHS, BUT Q WAS GIVEN A FAT CONTRACT EXTENSION, BECAUSE HE IS GOOD. CROMARTIE IS AN OUTSTANDING TALENT BUT WHY RISK GOING THROUGH THE GROWING PAINS WE WENT THROUGH WITH Q AND FLORENCE, WHEN YOU HAVE TWO CORNERS THAT CAN START ON ANY TEAM? AND DON'T FORGET HOW MANY CORNERS IN THIS LEAGUE TORY HOLT AND ISSAC BRUCE HAVE MADE FOOLS OF. THOSE GUYS ARE GREAT RECEIVERS NOT GOOD BUT GREAT. AND DON'T FORGET WHO GOT THE BETTER OF WHO LAST TIME THESE TEAMS MET IN THE REGULAR SEASON. THE DEFENSIVE SCHEMES IN THE PRESEASON ARE NOT WHAT WE SEE WHEN THEY SUIT UP FOR REAL.

Never, ever make it personal! We forget Jammer has never lived up to the #5 pick. We forget in 05 he gave up more TD's than any corner in the NFL. I to think he should move to safety, been saying it for years now. He did miss to many tackles sat night to play SS and he has no ball skills. Just to slow for corner as is Mr. 4/6 40 Oliver
Larry wrote on Aug 19, 2007 8:21 PM:Daniel is correct. The only beef I have with the corners are their hands - both Jammer and Florence have stone hands. As for against the Rams, most of the patterns run are IMPOSSIBLE to defend against with today's rules. There is nothing the CBs can do today to stop most passing plays against very good receivers and Holt is one of the best.
KN wrote on Aug 19, 2007 10:50 PM:I completely agree with Daniel. Jammer is Pro-Bowl quality and Florence performs extremely well aside from his inability to catch the ball. (That's one of the reasons I love the acquisition of Eric Weddle). The Rams have an offense comparable to that of the Chargers, according to Simms, so the multiple short completions to potential hall of fame wide receivers were acceptable.
Paul wrote on Aug 19, 2007 11:41 PM:Jammer haters never die. they just keep living in the past. Jammer was in the top 10 in passes defensed in 2005, which earned him a contract extension, improved on that and snagged four interceptions last year. Who do you think had the ballcarrier wrapped up when Shaun Phillips stripped him? On the other hand, Jammer has whiffed twice on tackles so far, which is very unlike him. Florence jumped his game last season, he looks better this year already, and if you were paying attention Saturday night he had four open-field tackles. Cromartie gets plenty of playing time in the Chargers' defensive scheme and is perfectly positioned to take over when Florence cashes in on a big contract in ree agency. Getting rid of any of these guys is nuts. As for the head butt, if you got rid of every Charger who made a key mistake against New England you'd be dumping Florence, McCree, Parker, Cromartie, Jammer, Jackson and Rivers at a minimum.

richard wrote on Aug 20, 2007 9:39 AM:everyone is always says that the "weak link" to the Chargers defense is the secondary... but i have to disagree with that thought because if you put those same corners on alot of other teams they would be that teams strength. just think... when you have a team with a front seven as great as the chargers do even Champ Bailey would be seen as the weak link.
Jrson wrote on Aug 20, 2007 12:09 PM:Preseason is Vanilla! We might throw in a few blitzes that we've never tried before but otherwise our defense is pure Vanilla. Anyone who thinks Jammer is weak needs to watch the Indy game of 05 (when we broke their record of 13 straight wins). He was matched up against Harrison... nuff said. I think we won that game the last time I checked... Indy went 1-3 last preseason before they won the Super bowl; dont be so quick to throw your corners under the bus
Jerry R.R. wrote on Aug 20, 2007 3:48 PM:Let's get back to the aricle... We are blessed to have both Shaun and Shawne on our team! Recalling Shaun's rookie year, I always felt that he would be great for our team, and I am thankful we did not let him get away! GO BOLTS!
Mo wrote on Aug 20, 2007 4:05 PM:Shaun Phillips is the real deal. I think he emerged from Merriman's shadow last season when he got a chance to start. I noticed him when he was a backup. He didn't play much, but when he did, he was getting after the QB and getting sacks. The Shawne and Shaun show will be a treat to watch for years. I predict 40 sacks between the two and Luis Castillo ...CHARGERS BABY!!
G Man wrote on Aug 20, 2007 6:29 PM:The Gaping Hole One offsides penalty by a wide receiver is in excusable. Three is beyond belief. I don't care if you are 6-5+, 240 pounds and as fast as the wind- if you can't concentrate and focus on the game- u are worse than worthless in my book. We must fix this problem ASAP or it will come back to haunt us... again.
