ENCINITAS -- Count Michael Gaszynski, 96, died of natural causes, Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at his home.
Born April 2, 1911, in Warsaw, Poland, he was a longtime resident of Southern California. He came to the United States representing his native country as a Polish diplomat at the United Nations Conference in San Francisco in 1945. He was proficient in seven languages including his native Polish, Russian, English, French and others. He was an artist and his artistic talent was recognized by The American Artist Magazine when he received the National Award for his black-and-white brush drawings. His interest in art started in 1951, when he was appointed director of millionaire philanthropist the Huntington Hartford Foundation for artists. He opened a successful cheesecake business, using his mother's recipe, and operated two award-winning restaurants in the Los Angeles area. He retired from the restaurant business in 1986 and devoted all of his free time to his art after moving to Encinitas. He won numerous awards while a member of the California Art Club in Los Angeles, and more recently at the Carlsbad Art League and the San Diego Art Guild.
Michael is survived by his wife of 52 years, Viviana, of Encinitas, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at sea, out of Oceanside Harbor.
