Talky 'Paris' vents on cultures, romance

In "2 Days in Paris," the less pleasant nuances of coupledom are apparent, despite the glamorous locale. That contrast, in part, is what makes the film appealing.

Julie Delpy and Adam Goldberg play Marion and Jack, a couple whose trip to her hometown becomes anything but pleasant. The striking differences between French and American cultures mirror the differences between the characters, leading to bickering and jealousies, among other developments.

As the easily rattled interior designer Jack attempts to cope with a culture he doesn't quite get, and Marion reverts to her French ways as she reacclimates, a series of verbal confrontations ensue. As Marion's ex-boyfriends show up and shower her with attention, Jack crumbles more and more, until both characters aren't sure what's next for them.

All this said ---- and "2 Days in Paris" is talky, with much to say ---- the film is largely a comedy, caustic jabs and witty retorts mixing with more heartfelt conversation. Written and directed by Delpy, the film is unafraid to use words as instruments to carry the action, whether those words are funny, hurtful or that strange place in between. By the time the talk ends, we've witnessed something fresh, funny and vibrant.
