ESCONDIDO -- The Escondido Grandmothers Club will host its first "Smart Shoppers" fashion show at noon Sept. 6 at the Joslyn Senior Center, 210 Park Ave. Fashions and decor will be furnished by Target in Escondido.

Join the group for refreshments, a drawing and prizes. Fashions will be modeled by grandmothers, including 99-year-old Anna, and one of the escorts will be a Tony Bennett look-alike. Music will be provided by Diane Talenski on piano.

Festival of Gems planned

FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Gem and Mineral Society will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a Festival of Gems from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 7 at its museum at 123 W. Alvarado St.

Activities and features will include gold panning, geode cracking, a silent auction, gemstone identification, a Kiwanis food booth, gems, minerals and fossils, raffle prizes and museum exhibits.

Rotarians gear up for Lobster on the Green

FALLBROOK -- The Rotary Club of Fallbrook's fifth annual Lobster on the Green will take place Sept. 13 at the Grand Tradition, featuring all-you-can-eat fresh lobster flown in from Maine and steak.

Funding period announced

FALLBROOK -- Rally for Children, a nonprofit organization supporting programs and projects for the benefit of local children, has announced its annual funding period. American Legion Auxiliary to host breakfast

ESCONDIDO -- The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 149 will host its First Sunday of the Month breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 2 at the Veterans Memorial Building, 230 Park Ave.

    Artists sought to decorate banners

    ESCONDIDO -- The Grape Day Festival and Parade committees are looking for local artists to decorate banners that will be featured in the Grape Day festivities Sept. 8.

    The Escondido Historical Society is providing canvas and instructions for the banners; artists provide paint and/or other decorating media. Certificates will be awarded to all banner participants and every participant will be entered into a drawing to win $100. The theme of the banners should relate to Grape Day, Escondido's heritage or this year's whimsical parade theme, "The Grape Days of Classic Television."

    The parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 8 and proceed down Grand Avenue. The festival will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. the same day at Grape Day Park.

    GriefShare workshop session to begin

    ESCONDIDO -- GriefShare, a nationally recognized, nondenominational group featuring biblical teaching on grief and recovery topics, will launch its fall workshop series in September at Emmanuel Faith Community Church, 639 E. Felicita Ave.

    GriefShare is a weekly seminar and support group for people grieving the death of someone close. Participants can come and be around people who understand how they feel and can relate to the pain of their loss. Attendees can learn valuable information and make new friends to help them through this difficult time.

    The fall workshop series will kick off with a special program from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 8 at Emmanuel Faith. Speaker Chip Whitman, a licensed professional counselor and director of Grief Care Inc. will present "The Journey -- Navigating the Currents of Loss." Suggested donation is $5 to $10.

    The workshop portion of GriefShare, which features video presentations and support-discussion groups, will be offered from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 11 through Nov. 20. Suggested donation is $25.

    OGHS Alumni Barbecue set for Sept. 21

    The CEC is a private, nonprofit volunteer organization that offers college-level, noncredit enrichment lectures on a variety of subjects. In addition to the academic program, the CEC offers free evening forums and lectures as a service to the community, field trips to points of interest and tickets and bus service to special evens such as operas and concerts.     Kids can learn etiquette at workshop

    SAN MARCOS -- The city will offer a two-part etiquette workshop for boys and girls ages 6 to 12 from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 8 and 15.

    In this fun and interactive workshop, kids will role play and practice proper etiquette -- from elegantly eating a sub, taco or cheeseburger or gracefully drinking from a bottle at a picnic to feeling at ease at a banquet.

    Discover San Marcos hike planned

    SAN MARCOS -- The city's Community Services Department will offer the first in a series of fall Discover San Marcos hikes from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 1.

    Participants can hike or bike the new road and trail access at South Twin Oaks Valley Road before the road officially opens. The moderately difficult route is approximately four miles in length and includes a 500-foot elevation change.

    Park along Twin Oaks Valley Road near the Village Drive intersection. Reservations are not required; sign-in at the meeting location.

    DAR chapter to meet Sept. 8

    OCEANSIDE -- The Santa Margarita chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 8.

    The meeting will be a field trip to the Marron Adobe in Oceanside, which is still occupied by a direct descendant of the Marrons. There will be a business meeting following a continental breakfast. Shelly Hayes Caron then will conduct a tour and talk about family stories of the days of Pio Pico, the Mission fathers and the local American Indians.

    The DAR is open to any female age 18 or older who has a direct line ancestor who participated in some way in the patriots' fight for independence in the Revolutionary War.

    Barbecue to benefit volunteer fire department

    PALOMAR MOUNTAIN -- The Palomar Mountain Volunteer Fire Department will hold its 30th annual Labor Day BBQ Fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 1 at the Palomar Mountain Fire Station.

    The event will include a barbecue, activities for kids, craft and vendor booths, rides on a 1929 fire truck, raffles, a beer garden and helicopter rides.

    The Palomar Mountain Fire Station is near the intersection of Highway S-6 and S-7. From Interstate 15, take Highway 76 east to S-6 and follow the signs.
