North San Diego County School News Briefs: New principal takes the helm

ESCONDIDO -- Edward Park recently took the job as principal at The Classical Academy in Escondido.

Park is a graduate of Cal State Northridge and holds several degrees in school administration and education. He has worked as a teacher, administrator and assistant school principal. Park, his wife and two daughters relocated to North County from Glendale. An immigrant from Korea, Park is bilingual and is a board member for Korean Language and Culture, which promotes the Korean language in American schools.

The previous principal, Jalyn Hall, will continue to work on campus.

Local residents make dean's lists

NORTH COUNTY -- A number of local residents earned spots on the dean's list at Azusa Pacific University.

They include Escondido residents: Alyss Valleroy, an art major and graduate of Orange Glen High School; Alisha Gilbert, a nursing major and graduate of Escondido High School; Austin Perkins, an athletic training major and graduate of Orange Glen High School; Julie Jones, a nursing major; Debra Dillon, a computer science major; Katelyn Paige, an art major and graduate of Orange Glen High School; Caleb Marcus, a business administration major; David Linder, a marketing major and graduate of Orange Glen High School; and Sarah Cruz, a liberal studies major.

Also on the list are Caroline Bernados of Poway, a social work major and graduate of Poway High School; Mark Ambroso of Poway, a biology major and graduate of Poway High School; and Kylee Miller of San Marcos, a social work major and graduate of San Marcos High School.

At the University of Kentucky, San Marcos resident John Witters, a senior studying architecture, was included on his college's spring 2007 semester dean's list for earning a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Poway resident earns dean's high honors

Kimberly Channick of Poway earned dean's high honors for the spring 2007 semester at Connecticut College for achieving a grade point average of between 3.7 and 4.0.

Mt. Carmel scholarships awarded

RANCHO PENASQUITOS -- For many years, Mt. Carmel High School's Parent, Teacher and Student Association has awarded several scholarships to graduating seniors who are members of the association and are continuing their education. A committee of volunteers reviews the applications and chooses several students for the award. All seniors are encouraged to apply.

Students receiving scholarships this year are: Lauren Dieckmann, attending UC San Diego; Megan Fitzmaurice, attending Westmont College in Santa Barbara; Rebekah Logan, attending UC Santa Barbara; Zakiya Shivji, attending Cal State Long Beach; Kevin Weaver, attending UC Irvine; and Natalie Young, attending University of the Arts, London, England.

Twin Peaks defines its absence policy

POWAY -- Parents and guardians of Twin Peaks Middle School students should call the 24-hour attendance hotline before 8:25 a.m. the morning a student is absent. Call (858) 748-5131, Ext. 2809. Students have 24 hours to clear their absences. If an absence is not cleared, students must bring a note to the attendance office before 8:20 a.m. the day they return to school. If the absence is not verified by a parent or guardian phone call stating the reason for the absence within 24 hours, the absence will be recognized as a truancy.

Bernardo Heights offers before-, after-school programs

RANCHO BERNARDO -- Bernardo Heights Middle School is offering before- and after-school programs during the 2007-08 school year. Supervision in the gym begins at 7 a.m. and the library opens at 7:30 a.m. Any student on campus before 7:55 a.m., when campus officially opens to students, must report to the gym or library. Quality Children's Services is running an after-school program from 3:15 to 6:15 p.m.; and there are a variety of clubs, tutorials and sports activities available to students from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Registration forms are required for all students participating in any before- or after-school program. LCCHS alumna earns degree

Mari Wright, a 2003 graduate of La Costa Canyon High School, recently earned a bachelor's degree in English from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

As a sophomore, she participated in the college choir and was secretary for the Bates Democrats. She spent the winter semester of her junior year in Florence, Italy.

Active with the campus newspaper, The Bates Student, she served as assistant news editor in 2004, managing arts editor in 2005 and deputy editor-in-chief in 2006.

She acted in the Robinson's Players production of "Play it Again, Sam" and participated in the 2007 Mount David Summit, an annual celebration of student academic achievement at Bates. She is the daughter of Casey and Ann Wright.

Volleyball clinic offered

CARLSBAD -- Members of Carlsbad High School's varsity volleyball team will hold a skills clinic for volleyball enthusiasts ages 10 and older from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 7 in the "old gym" on campus, 3557 Monroe St. Preregistration is recommended, and a $30 donation will be accepted. Free, reduced-price meals policy set

SOLANA BEACH -- The Solana Beach School District recently announced its policy for providing free and reduced price meals to students under the National School Lunch Program.

Each school and district office have a copy of the policy, and applications are being distributed to all households with a letter explaining the program. Applications also are available at each principal's office, and can be submitted any time during the school year. Household size and income, as well as other criteria, determine eligibility for free and reduced-price meals. For more information, call the district office at (858) 794-7100.

ESL registration, barbecue set

North County schools win state award

NORTH COUNTY -- Five North County schools recently were named among the top 50 finalists in the 2007 Governor's Challenge competition.

The competition, sponsored by General Mills and coordinated by the Governor's Council of Physical Fitness & Sports, offers recognition to California teachers, principals, organizations, companies, events, parks programs and schools that represent the finest efforts in the state to promote physical activity and fitness for all youngsters.

Of the six schools named in San Diego County this year, five were North County schools. They are: Adobe Bluffs Elementary, Poway Unified School District; Alvin Dunn Elementary, San Marcos Unified School District; Ivey Ranch Elementary, Oceanside Unified School District; Solana Highlands Elementary, Solana Beach School District; and Valley Center Middle School, Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District.

Of the top 50 finalists, 11 regional winners are selected, with a final winner announced in September. To be selected as a regional winner, schools must make sure that students are active 30 to 60 minutes per day at least three days a week for four weeks. The schools with the highest percentage of students completing the challenge in each of the 11 regions in California are named regional winners and are finalists for the competition's grand prize, a new fitness center.

Local residents make dean's lists

NORTH COUNTY -- A number of local residents earned spots on the dean's lists at their respective college campuses. Loyola University students Sean Sobash of Encinitas and Robert Swanton of Vista earned the honor by maintaining a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for a semester.

At Azusa Pacific University, the following students made the list with at least a 3.5 grade point average: Ryan Secrest of Carlsbad, a global studies major and son of Lauri Secrest; Mary Lucas of Del Mar, a theater arts major, graduate of Torrey Pines High School and daughter of Linda Lucas; Ashley Duckgeischel of Encinitas, a psychology major and graduate of Calvin Christian High School; Dayna Richards of Encinitas, a performance/trumpet major; Lily Atherton of Encinitas, an English major, graduate of La Costa Canyon High School and daughter of Susan Neville; Kelsey Holmes of Encinitas, a communication studies major and graduate of San Dieguito Academy; Jenna Schuette of Encinitas, a journalism major and graduate of Santa Fe Christian School; Danielle Moreno of Oceanside, a psychology major; Carrie Tilton of Oceanside, an English major and graduate of Guajome Park Academy; Jennifer Stripe of Rancho Santa Fe, a biology major and graduate of Santa Fe Christian School; Kelle Calahan of Vista, a psychology major and graduate of Tri-City Christian School; Dennis Marinello of Vista, a psychology

major and graduate of Tri-City Christian School; Carrie Holmes of Vista, an art major; and Sean Beck of Vista, a music major and graduate of Tri-City Christian School.

UC Santa Barbara announced its dean's honors list for the 2007 spring quarter. To make the list, students must have a grade point average of at least 3.75 in the College of Letters and Science or 3.50 in the College of Engineering. Honorees include Vista residents: Stephanie Laine Cooper, a sociology major; Sara Garrison, an English major; and Dustin Mersy, a business economics major.

At the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y., Andrew Bochenko of Encinitas was placed on the spring 2007 semester dean's list for academic achievement in the College of Arts, Sciences and Engineering.

San Dieguito 70th anniversary planned

ENCINITAS -- San Dieguito High School's classes of 1937 to 1965 will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the school with activities planned from Sept. 13 through 16.

The four-day celebration will begin with a golf tournament Sept. 13 to benefit the San Dieguito Memorial Scholarship Fund, followed by tours of the school and individual class mixers Sept. 14. From 3 to 10 p.m. Sept. 15, all classes involved will be honored and reunions of the classes of 1937, 1941, 1947, 1952, 1957 and 1962 will be observed during a celebration at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. A brunch at San Dieguito Park will be held Sept. 15.

Encinitas resident earns degree

ENCINITAS -- Rebecca Claire of Encinitas recently graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelor's degree in engineering. Founded in 1873, the university is a private research college of about 6,400 undergraduates and more than 5,000 graduate and professional students.

Box tops sought at Mary Fay Pendleton

FALLBROOK -- The Box Tops Education Volunteer Coordinator at Mary Fay Pendleton is seeking assorted box tops. Box-tops for Education is a nationwide program many school PTAs participate in as a way to earn money for their schools. Last year, Mary Fay Pendleton, with help from the community, earned $2,800. People are encouraged to check packages for the Boxtops4Education 10-cent logo, then clip it and send it to: Mary Fay Pendleton, Attention Box tops Coordinator,110 Marine Drive, Oceanside, CA 92054.

Every box top that is sent in to General Mills is 10 cents earned for the school.

Tri-tip dinners resume

FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook High School FFA is once again hosting its famous tri-tip dinners before all home football games as a fundraiser for FFA leadership development activities throughout the school year. The first home game is Aug. 31, when the Warriors will be playing on the new football field. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Ag department, located at the east end of the football field. Each meal includes tri-tip, beans, salad, dinner roll and a drink. Cost: $8. The remaining home games are Sept. 7, Oct. 5, which is homecoming; Oct, 26 and Nov. 2, which is senior night.

Spaces remain in preschool program

FALLBROOK -- Fallbrook Union Elementary School District will begin free preschool classes Sept. 17. A limited number of spaces are available for children ages four and up. To be eligible to attend, parents must submit an enrollment form during the enrollment lottery window which began Aug. 27 and ends Sept. 6. Preschool classes will be held at the Mike Choate Center for Early Childhood Education located at 407 S. Mission Road.

Teacher attends training session

FALLBROOK -- Dave Kootman from Fallbrook Union Elementary School District participated with 40 other educators from across the country at Discovery Educator Network National Institute in Port Canaveral, Fla.

The Discovery Educator Network is a global community of educators passionate about integrating media into classroom curriculum. The DEN National Institutes are development opportunities open only to STAR Discovery Educators. These educators are DEN members recognized for their outstanding efforts to share their insight and expertise with their peers through activities including facilitating trainings, workshops or presentations about how to integrate Discovery Education products and services in the classroom.

During the institute, national leaders in educational technology collaborated with participants on a variety of educational technology projects. By the end of the institute, participants had created classroom ready multimedia projects, learned new ways to incorporate digital storytelling into their classroom lessons and had heard briefings on the newest online technologies used by today's technology-savvy generation.
