The entertainment of politics

Michael J. Fox does it. Martin Sheen does it. Bono's one of the kings of it.
In the days leading to election, Mr. Clean barely has a chance to get in a commercial touting his mopping ability with all the political ads running.
To catch your eye, some political groups are using celebrities, those faces you know and love, to promote their cause.
Recently, Michael J. Fox -- who suffers, sometimes visibly, from Parkinson's disease -- has appeared in a number of ads that support stem cell research. I'm guessing that would be a 'left-wing issue' because Rush Limbaugh then went on the air accusing Fox of using his disease and his acting skills to further his agenda (Limbaugh has since apologized).
Should celebrities step out of the spotlight and onto the soapbox? Is it pompous for the glitteratti to believe we care about what they think? Using one's fame to promote charities (such as Bono has done) is noble, but where is the line drawn? Should there even be a line?

In fact, in this case, many (the majority, in fact) of our fellow Americans can see the value in stem cell research. The Republican Party is trying desperately to hold onto the small group of die-hard voters that still support them (the anti-choice group). In the process, they are willing to throw overboard the possibility of life-saving cures that could come from stem cell research. So yes, I think Fox is totally justified in standing up for this cause. It is obviously personal for him, and I think he has the same rights as other Americans to voice his opinion. If a campaign wants to give him a megaphone, that is their choice, and the voters can decide whether or not they approved of it.

Of course, they do have an edge, and the special interest groups seek them out. Entertainers with failing popularity, and the number and quality of job offers declining, mostly due to their getting old and starting to resemble a prune as I am, see the free publicity as a boon. For some odd reason they do not consider that they are splitting their fans into those that are for and those that are against their subject. In addition, the public may have not been aware of their dumbness and how far it goes. This will take another big slice off their popularity. An adage I first heard from my father applies more to those in the entertainment field than others: "Do not let them know what you are thinking. Do not talk about politics, religion, sex or your financial affairs, at work or to strangers. Many people will not agree with you and you will find your supporters dropping in number. Depend of your skills for popularity. My advice to entertainers is to do your very best at the jobs you do get. When it comes to politics, religion, and sex, sit, smile, and keep your mouth shut! Of course this does not apply to M. Fox.

The dumbing down of our society has elevated these pampered and spoiled egomaniacs to a position of credibility when, in fact, they are nutso's for the most part. So, if you gulp down their political soup it is your own fault. Ever notice the Hollywood crowd is nearly all far left wing whacko's? Can they influence my vote...yea,....against whatever their position is.

The left wants you to believe that "Stem Cell Research" is threatened by the right and they have succeeded. The fact is the key word "Embryonic" is carefully left out, over and over again. It's "Embryonic Stem Cell research" that the right wing loonies are against. That will have to be another post. Bush simply refuses to allow the government to fund this type of research, because he believes that it is immoral to “take life to save life”. Bush is the first president to authorize government grant money for "Adult Stem Cell Research", but no good deed goes unpunished. Michael J. Fox is a great guy and is dieing of a disease that destroys a person's life and body while they watch. Talk about torture, I am not going to hold anything against him or second guess him. If your not the praying type then smoke one for Michael and don't put him in the category of those who want to see themselves as gods. In the words of my hero "Bring it on!" you sharp toothed puppies.
